Why the hell do you tink Pat Toomey was willing to debate Joe Sestak so many times?

Rooney's brain (Rendell) said the same thing about McCain if Obama was the nominee. Rooney is a smart guy, but his time in leadership is about to end if Sestak wins the nomination. It's most appropriate to view Rooney's statement as one of self-preservation than of actual tea-leaf reading.
My gut says that Toomey wins regardless of his opponent. He beats Specter b/c loyal D's stay home with a weak nominee for gov. He beats Sestak too, but at least it helps bring out the loyal D's to vote for the weak nominee for gov and help the vulnerable D congressional candidates. Sestak can motivate the hard core D's in a general. Specter cannot. D's lose more races with Specter as the nominee than they do with Sestak.
When that senior citizen in the now famed photo screamed at Specter during a town hall meeting last year, it spoke volumes of the discouragement and fear so many taxpayers face these days. Looking bac, the gentleman's lucky he wasn't tazered.
Specter should never be counted out. But as a Democrat newcomer, I wonder how the party faithful feel about the vicious hatchet job he's been doing on loyal Democrat Sestak.
I respectfully think that Mr. Ronney is mistaken. I am disappointed that a State party Chairman would take a hatchet to a true Democratic candidate. The Schism between the free thinking Dems and the machine Dems grows wider daily. And who says this seat is in Democrat hands? It is in Arlen $pecter's hands. He will be whatever he needs to be for him to survive. Sestak's latest campaign commercial is brilliant. Specter is only interested in saving his job, not yours. CHA-CHING!
This is a true example of machine over principle. The state machine has promoted "no-principles but myself" Arlen Specter as the Party standard bearer. The big money machine Dem's are pushing him. Young pols on the make like Steve Barron, are promoting him locally to enhance their establishment bones. The sad thing is Specter is over, the voters of PA are good, decent people and they see the Specter move for what it is, an arrogant old pol who will do ANYTHING to win. The smear campaign against Joe Sestak is all we needed to see. Shame on Democrats that support this sham of a candidacy.
Toomey has a good shoot at beating this dinosaur.
Sestak can beat Toomey. Rooney is just carrying the Party water. Rendell gave Rooney and team Callahan their marching order and they picked Barron to shill for Specter, but they are missing the human element.
In a general election, voters will get to see the real Toomey record. His comments about punishing women and doctors who perform abortion. His desire to end Social Security and medicare. His comments and history are out there as a matter of public record. In Republican circles he may seem like a God but to the regular Pa voter? He makes Rick Santorum look like Mao.
A career military man with ethics and conviction and strong family values will beat Toomey easy. The State may lean right but it does not roll that far-right. Toomey is an extremist and if the Party can't get his record out there they have themselves and not Sestak to blame.
This is a sad affair and has created a schism in the Democratic Party that will take a long time to heal.
We have essentially said, we have no values, we will follow Party orders regardless of the lack of principles. Hey Carl Rove we like your numbers, want to run as a Dem in PA?
The damage to the Democratic Party out weights the perceived gains.

People said the same about the Obama v Clinton contest. If Sestak wins, the party machine will atone for its ways, raise Sestak a boat load of money and line up with the liberal base that will have won him the election.
In Sestak the Dems have a candidate with all the qualities they claim they want-ie, a military veteran with a social conscience. And what do they do to him? They don't just promote Specter as the "most likely to beat Toomey" (I don't agree) but they completely character assassinate Sestak. What does it tell them that as their attacks on true Democrat Sestak grow, so too does Sestak's support among Democrat voters. Specter used to vote independently on issues like abortion and labor issues. During the Bush years he veered far to the right. Just last week in the Morning Call he said he's still not comfortable being a Democrat. But this is what the machine is telling us to vote for. Is it any wonder most people are just not interested in elections.
Toomey will be our new senator, it is as simple as that. I do think Joe Sestak will beat Arlen Specter, Sestak has all the momentum right now and has jumped ahead of Specter in the polls according to the MC polling. Should make for a interesting primary on May 18
Toomey's record of criminalizing abortion and ending Social security and Medicare will really go over well in a Sate like Pennsylvania. Not to mention his Wall Street Banking credentials.
When his record is put out there Joe Sestak will win, Toomey will go back to the Club for Greed and Specter will be at Gracedale!

If anyone deserves the taser, it would be Specter.
