Hailstone To Be Replaced by "Wise Guy" At Great NIZ Debate

Jeff Barber, Wise Guy
Allentown's DCED Director, Sara Hailstone, has decided, at the last minute, to decline to participate in the Great NIZ Debate.

This debate, which will be taped today at WFMZ's Business Matters, originally featured Hailstone and Michael Fleck, who is the Allentown mayor's campaign consultant as well as a shill for the Lehigh Valley building trade unions.

In view of pending NIZ litigation with surrounding municipalities and developer Abe Atiyeh, municipal attorneys have wisely counseled Hailstone to stay out of the arena.

She'll be replaced by NIZ cheerleader Jeff Barber. He's the President of Lehigh Financial Group, has a realty office and also is a partner at Wise Guys Beer Depot, located at 209 W. Union. Barber claims that this demonstrates he's "very civic minded."

I doubt Barber is really a "wise guy." But one of his two Lehigh Fnancial colleagues, Gary Chromiak, spent a year in federal prison after helping Michael Solomon get illegal kickbacks from Northampton County in 2002. So he's got that going for him.

Fleck's benefiting personally from the NIZ, too.

He recently herded about thirty trade union members to invade Hanover Township and pressure Supervisors to drop their NIZ litigation. This lawsuit, filed in Commonwealth Court, challenges Allentown's tax grab of EIT for a hockey arena and other improvements.

Supervisors listened politely to union workers, but were unswayed.

Union pressure is less effective in suburban communities as it is in one-party Allentown.

But Fleck is getting paid anyway.

Unlike paid NIZ advocates, nobody is paying Lehigh University's Dr. Steven Thode a dime for his opinion. Thode recently facilitated a meeting among developers who are concerned that Allentown's 130-acre NIZ will destabilize the tax base, resulting in real estate tax increases for residential home owners. He also participated in a Morning Call Point and Counterpoint.

Thode warns that the NIZ, which gives Allentown and a few favored developers, special preferential treatment at the expense of everyone else, is a death knell to regionalism.
Fundamentally, the NIZ is likely to greatly diminish cooperation among Lehigh Valley cities and municipalities in promoting the Lehigh Valley as a region. The NIZ is the first volley in, sadly, what will likely become an "every municipality for itself" mentality. That could have a devastating effect on job growth and the quality of life for everyone in the Lehigh Valley.
Originally, I was going to be Dr. Thode's tag team partner, not that he needs one. But Fleck, who knew very well that I'd be connecting the dots between him, unions, Mayor Pawlowski and campaign contributions, objected. So I've been replaced as a panelist.

After today, Fleck might regret that decision. I've been replaced by blogger Michael Molovinsky. He's been writing about this topic long before anyone.

He's not being paid a dime by anyone, either.

And unlike the other participants, he's the one panelists with deep City roots.

I'm told The Express Times will cover the debate. I was invited to cover it, too, but I think it's bad form for me to show up after being disinvited as a panelist. I look forward to hearing and reading the acconts, and then watching the show on the 'Net.

Wise Guys Beer??? Seriously???? As I have said before, this town really is run by the mob.

I don't know this Jeff Barber personally, but Bernie, you've managed to effectively crush him as a credible source of any information in this debate. He's just another mob thug hired to take financial advantage of this idiotic town.

Incidentally, I love beer and have no problem with Barber selling the stuff. But naming it Wise Guys???? God it just absolutely kills me. I sure hope you don't wake up with a horse head in your bed, Bernie. Thanks so much for covering this story.

Retired ASD teacher here.

From what I've read, the Express-Times is solidly in the tank for this project. I expect their review to reflect that. My hope is, they simply want to see a new entertainment facility built here, and they really ARE oblivious to how questionable this funding plan is.

I'd like to repeat, the majority opposition here is to the funding plan, NOT Allentown building whatever it wants, including an arena.

This is a question of fair and best use of taxpayer monies. Who cares what Allentown, the Phantoms, the developers who see opportunity within the NIZ, decide to do with THEIR money.

So far, the VAST majority of those who pay affected taxes are unhappy.Unless there are significant changes, they'll stay that way.

Have not seen Future Downtown Arena Attendee around leading the cheer lately.

Must be working on some better Propaganda in a sure-to-fail bid to make me to shut up and buy tickets to Chairman Pawlowski's magnificent $ 220.0 million dollar Palace of Sport.

JUST SAY NO TO THE NIZ

Personally, I'd like to ask MIKE FLECK one question :

"Do you REALLY think that the BROOKS BROTHERS are 'paying their fair share' for Chairman Pawlowski's magnificent $ 220.0 million dollar Palace of Sport?"

I'd even be willing to risk the Union Rat being blown up outside my home, incessant harrassment by union thugs on my way to and from my place of employment, whatever worst the People's Heroes think they got going on ... just to be able to ask one teensy, tiny little question ...

Personally, I despise Class Warfare. But, Democrats (led by President Obama) clearly don't. And I fully understand sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

a wise guy pretender replaces an economic pretender

eddie boy loses his animal control job in hereford and joins bible school

browne and hussy are moving to N. Dakota to defraud oil companies and screw locals (their specialty)

callahan tells controller and council to take a hike. moves kelly to allenswamp so he can take over as king

callahan annexs to bethlehem the west side of allenswamp and coke/a cola park- gives the rest of city to whitehall.

whitehall succeeds from the union

Parks take over the rest of the steel brownfield and opens a hockey arena and strip bar. WWWE manages place

Callahan and brother-in -law go to the strip bar and roll a car with sweet young things in back seat.

All BPD report to WAWA for fresh donuts and coffee. Only Sgt Schultz responses to accident. "I see nothing, I hear nothing................"

LVEDC bozos go straight to 19th hole at noon and text anybody and everybody to show how stupid they are.

self-serving developers move in on easton. Panto slices of the best parts and floats over to NJ.

angle becomes county exec. hires o'hare as county solicitor. DA goes to allenswamp and jumps off 8th street bridge. survives as he bounces off Lehigh county DA's belly.

NC controller becomes barmaid at union kiltfest where the treat of the day is west easton roast pig

Even if you are correct, 11:10PM, does that mean "end of discussion" on this issue?

Does it all come down to Mr. Molivinsky?

"Personally, I'd like to ask MIKE FLECK one question :"

Really? He's got a phone-so call him, Billy Bigballs, and spare us all your rather worn attempts at recreating the same lame jokes every comment.

(Yeah, yeah we get it. Hockey references. Socialism references. Wow- I'll bet your mom told you that you were a very special and boy).

Mike Fleck is (1) a paid consultant to the trade unions who want the NZ bc of the TEMPORARY construction jobs; and (2) Mayor Pawlowski's campaign consultant dependent on the contributions comong in from NIZ beneficiaries and contractors.

It's not complicated.

actually, it is. I don't see any direct tie in either instance to the NIZ, although number 2 is close.

I jest watched biz niz matters and fat flecks baligerent behavior on the show. This is how this administration has been bulling its way from palumpashitsky geting in as king. Before that he headed the economic destruction of allentown of afterefect administration that always came up in the red at fiscal year end. We are going to allow the king to totally destroy any economic viability of allentown pa.

The bottom line here is king palumpashitsky is still trowing a tantrum for allentown not getting the casino. Now others have been manipulated into thinking this is a viable venue at the cost of quality of life to allentown trickle down even to neglect and abuse of small childrens health care. This thing calls himself a humanitarian? I just call him a BULLY with the help of the legal firm esq that protects the city against the public that has been wronged by officials.

Bernie O'Hare is a dumb ass! He only hears what he wants to hear. That's why he deletes comments that are pro NIZ. As the son of Jeffrey Barber and name creator of the name "Wise Guys", I feel that my Dad has believed in Allentown before big investors did!
