Goffredo: We Need To Consider Economic Development in Smaller Communities

At the conclusion of last week's Northampton County Council meeting concerning economic development, member John Goffredo noted that it is "perfectly explainable" why so many projects emanate from Bethlehem and Easton. But he wondered what the county should be doing to spur economic development in the rest of the county. He observed that many local businesses closed during the pandemic and never re-opened. "There's no bakery in the slate belt, a local cheese place that I adored in the area that never opened back up, and I'm sure there are a lot of other economic development opportunities."  He suggested that the county and committee members should reach out to local communities to see if they can help in any way.

Do you have any suggestions in your area? It would be good to name the location and what you think is needed.

The democrat votes are in Bethlehem and Easton. McClure can count.

Goffredo should run for county executive.

wonder what the county economic/development department does

Actually all the large suburban townships are now majority Dem. Townships of Hanover, Bethlehem, Lower Saucon, Palmer, and Forks have Democrat majority boards.

Consider that any help is actually your taxes going to benefit a private party. If you want to see how distorted that can become, visit Allentown, where they make millionaires into billionaires with your taxes. It takes long term incumbents and practice, but it has to start somewhere, even with a little cheese shop.

Wonder what LVEDC does?

The LVEDC has neglected the Slate Belt since its inception. Not one business that has been brought to the Slate Belt was brought there through the LVEDC. Those along the Delaware River came from help through the BACIDA. Funds the county gives to LVEDC should be proportionally deducted and given to the BACIDA. The county council reps from the Slate Belt should pursue that option.

I have received and have rejected an anonymous personal attack aimed at an elected official. While I generally am pretty lenient when it comes to those, this one goes astray even by own lax standards for elected officials.

Isn’t Goffredo a little bigoted ?

That's like asking if someone is a "little" pregnant. You either are or are not. What's sad here is to see anonymous personal attacks at someone who had a fairly good idea. I was hoping to hear from people in different municipalities who could express desires for specific businesses, but instead he gets attacked.

Goffredo is already helping smaller communities. He got a big tax break for Lou Pektor’s place in Mt. Bethel. That should count.

That LERTA passed before Goffredo was on council, didnt it?

Wilson Boro just signed off on a massive warehouse. So why must I subsidize the Dixie developers rental building?
