Last week, I told you that Amy Cozze blackmailed the county she now wants to lead. As NorCo Elections Registrar, she submitted her resignation and made it effective just 12 days before the November 2, 2021 municipal election. I included her own resignation letter, obtained through a Right-to-Know request, in which she also complains about stress and her mental and physical health. She put her own interests ahead of the county's core obligation in assuring the citizenry that its votes would be counted. Her blackmail worked. After she got the money she wanted, she rescinded her resignation.
I believe that once you've dug yourself into a hole, it's time to stop. But Cozze has taken her shovel and is digging a bit deeper. On her campaign Facebook page, she attempts to justify her blackmail. I'll post her 7-paragraph explanation, followed by my response.
Over the course of this primary, my opponent and her supporters have lied about my departure from county government. I’ve chosen not to respond because I believe this campaign should be focused on our visions for Northampton County not divisive distractions. However, information from my private personnel file was shared to build a misleading narrative and I feel I need to address it.In late 2019, following a disastrous election, I was offered the position of Chief Registrar at a salary far below what Election Administrators in similar counties were making, with the understanding—handshake agreement included—that my starting salary would be adjusted the following year based on performance. In 2020, while battling my second round of breast cancer, I led a team that transformed Northampton County’s elections from national embarrassment to a state model during historic and unprecedented times. We implemented mail-in voting from scratch, rebuilt voter trust, trained 800+ poll workers, and delivered results faster than any other county in the Commonwealth. We did this all while receiving regular threats of violence and constant harassment by extremists. As a result, I was recognized by the Governor and appointed by the PA Senate to the Election Law Advisory Board, and the County Executive’s reputation had been restored. I did not receive an increase in pay.In the fall of 2021, after nearly two years of flawless elections, I was finally told I would be receiving the raise I was promised in 2019. However, less than an hour later, I was told there had been an “accounting error,” so I would not receive the raise. My many attempts to have the issue corrected before the budget was finalized were met with silence. So, with the full support of my deputy and staff, I made the extremely difficult decision to resign.Once Council heard what happened, they took it upon themselves to work to keep me at the county and approve a step increase for myself and my Deputy Registrar. That raise was then vetoed by the County Executive, the veto was overturned by Council, with only my opponent dissenting.Let me be clear: I resigned because, like too many county employees, I felt I was being taken advantage of, and saw no end in sight. I stood up for myself and my staff—just as I’ve always stood with workers throughout my career. It’s one of the reasons I’m running for County Executive - not only have I seen the struggles county employees face, I’ve faced them myself.Northampton County needs leadership that values workers, honors commitments, and puts competence over politics. As County Executive, I’ll fight for fair wages, safe workplaces, and accountable government. If, like me, you're tired of toxic politics and broken promises—then I hope I can earn your support.
My response:
1) I am unaware whether Tara Zrinski has made Cozze's blackmail an issue. I also should point out that I am far from a Tara Zrinski supporter. Though I think she has done a good job as Controller, I was highly critical of her as a Council member.
2) Cozze's resignation letter is public information. I researched the Pa. Office of Open Records before making this request and found numerous cases supporting the public's right to know. Anyone who runs for public office should expect scrutiny. I never requested her "private personnel file".
3) She claims to have chosen against explaining her blackmail but now devotes seven paragraphs to doing just that.
4) I am unaware whether McClure promised her more $ when he hired her as Registrar. But he did give her a raise, just not the raise she wanted. What I also know is that after losing an election to Joe Emrick, she was crying about having no healthcare. McClure offered her a job in his administration. No good deed goes unpunished. County Council buckled under the blackmail, but McClure vetoed the raise and Zrinski supported that veto. They oppose blackmail.
5) I have already conceded that she made numerous changes in the elections office that improved our elections. That's why she was appointed. Unfortunately, her people skills are terrible.
6) She admits that she offered her resignation to take effect just 12 days before an election and solely because she thought she deserved more money. That's unconscionable.
7) She made no effort to secure better compensation packages for the rank-and-file elections workers that she ignored as Registrar.
8) Speaking of toxic politics, she claimed falsely that NorCo left all kinds of federal grant money on the table, while the truth is that the US Senator who employed her gave NorCo a big fat 0 despite numerous requests. I'm just pointing out that she exalted her own financial well-being over the county's core obligation to conduct an election. If that is who you want, vote for her.

Here’s a fun Amy Cozze fact: during the 2020 Election, according to Charles, while Trump and DeJoy were messing with the mail to prevent your vote from counting, she OPPOSED drop boxes being purchased and distributed.
Got a very nice piece of mail from Amy yesterday, but it was missing something. Her Wife. Anne is nowhere to be found. The very same people who excoriated Tara for not being pro-LGBT enough are cynically hiding the true identity of their family. Don’t they trust the voters ? They should. In the Democratic we understand Love is Love.
Thank you for reporting on this, Bernie. Our local media outlets are a disgrace.
Not sure what Amy’s complaining about. She started at the County making 30. Left the County making 70. She was promoted from a Clerical Tech to Registrar in just 2 years. Then she chose to leave for an opportunity to work for Sen. Casey.
She claimed the full support of her deputy and staff in her decision to resign. Of course they gave her that. That's how badly they wanted to get rid of her
While battling my second round of breast cancer - when all else fails go for the pity vote
Poor BO, you are just not gay enough to understand the trials and tribulations of the poor child
Wow! That's quite interesting, I would note, but I've received no campaign literature from her I do note that her webpage is bereft of any mention of her personal life in her "about Amy" section. But it's also missing any mention of any stands on any issues facing the county
Ladies and gentleman your current democrat party. Who votes for these people?
What a terrible choice us Dems have- I just can't suport Tara "bullhorn"" Zrinski- she's just a phony lightweight activist looking for the next advancement, but Cozze has her issues too!
Kudos for her for standing up for dignity of pay. I imagine some hefty raises were given out to others during that time frame. Hell, some got bonus money for simply for showing up to work. I can't imagine the stress of that job and the public scrutiny. I don't begrudge anyone from wanting fair pay. In an earlier post, you note that she was not kind to staff yet in her letter, all she does is praise them and gives confidence in their ability to move forward without her. While I cannot vote in Northampton County, I would like to know more about candidates positions on issues that matter.
If there is anyone out there who hasn't wanted a raise in their career, please tell us you story.
I haven't seen any of her mailers either nor any social media, but on her campaign webpage she mentions "As a mother of two wonderful boys..." but Bernie is right. No other mention of her personal or family life. Mentioning family in a political ad is always the candidate's call but what they say, or omit, is worth noting.
Of course Bernie published all the anti Amy comments first, but this is absolutely not the sentiment of the current election employees
I do vote in Northampton County. These are the kind of ridiculous attacks against one candidate that always lead me to vote FOR that maligned candidate.
Sounds like she deserved the raise, but she did not do all the hard work herself. A true leader would have spoken on behalf of her hard working underpaid staff especially during the times of COVID. Sounds like she wanted nothing more than a raise for herself, not the kind of leader I’m looking for the run the county.
Understand as a moderate Democrat this is a tough one I may have to vote Giovanni as long as he doesn’t prove to be a Trumper
Bernie,
You're so predictable that we all know you're going to throw Amy under the bus, which will help Tara before the primary, but after the primary you're going to start beating up on Tara and supporting Giovanni, who you call a quiet man, but the rest of us know he's only quiet because he doesn't want to speak so people know how stupid he is
Bernie, We know you do mostly Northampton County but there is a potential problem in the Whitehall school district It may signal what will happen in other Lehigh valley districts. For the 20th year in a row, they want to raise taxes but this time as much as the state will allow. The school board in Whitehall spends on anything they want from elaborate administration buildings to sports bars in their athletic facilities. These people must be stopped are they are going to bankrupt the senior citizens.
It was interesting on Cozze’s mail piece that dropped how she was “strongly endorsed” by Casey and Wild. Wasn’t aware that there is now a focus on the severity of the endorsement.
Read the article. Her deputy got a raise as well.
Endorsed by 2 losers - too funny
The Patriarchy loathes Sapphic love therefore they employ one of their most reliable foot soldiers (Bernie) to tar and feather a stunning cancer victim who happens to be a lesbian. Lesbians reject the repulsive male gaze for self defense and preservation, entitled boomers like Bern feel spurned therefore they lash out like the petulant little troglodytes they are
Amy lies all the time. She will lie to the public when she’s Exec. You’re warned.
Amy has in her public flyer the following statement....."While serving with Senator Bob Casey as Director of Outreach, she delivered millions of dollars to Northampton County to create jobs and improve our neighborhoods."
AMY, PLEASE show me where, or tell me where, you delivered this money and how it was used. Do that and You get my vote.
6:34 am: Wishing you only the best and hope good health and healing is in your near future.
Me too! Bullhorn Tara is a disgrace, and Cozzie is just as crazy. If Giovanni doesn't go crazy, he'll have my vote.
Tara the bullhorn isn't too sharp either
I got her flyer in today's mail and it does contain the statement you mention. I suppose you could interpret it to mean that millions of federal dollars went to various programs from which citizens benefited. But neither she nor Senator Casey delivered a cent to Northampton County government despite multiple requests.
2:16, Her deputy got a well-deserved raise and is the MVP of the elections office and has been for many years. The staff got nothing.
My thoughts completely- 2 useless losers who did nothing for the LV. Casey had to be the least effective Senator in history. If it weren't for his daddy, he'd be unemployed.
Please stop with the identity politics- the pic of the 2 of you was scary enough
11:47, I was highly critical of Tara as a Council member, but like what she has done as Controller. I would also note that she has been an environmental advocate for many years, long before she got into politics. I respect that, but thought the plastic straw resolution was ineffective and suggested a better approach would be to pay $15 an hour to people who need work to clean up the streams and rivers. I also like Tom G, who has a lot of common sense. I can honestly say I like them both and would want to hear what they have to say before deciding.
You are a hypocrite who loves to lecture others on honesty and good govenrment. Here you are pushing one candidate's agenda and ignoring other information. People, he will back Zirinski in the Fall not in the name of good government, but because he wants to keep an employee on the county dole.
CARES? ARPA? CDBG?
Casey was the worst- a totally ineffective Senator.
That jumped out at me also. I wish her well with her cancer fight, but it’s tacky to use it for political gain.
What are the pronouns for a troglodyte? It/That/Thing, perhaps?
I remember when you interviewed Casey a few years ago, and you kissed his ass- the guy was always an empty suit!
1:39 -- I saw the mailer you refer to. The "Strongly endorsed by [Stooge A (Casey)] [Stooge B. (Wild)]" is on the promo side (Showing the Cozz shaking hands with an unseen person who is, hopefully, "gay enough" and on the mailing address side it says "Strongly endorsed by [Stooge A (Casey)], [Stooge B. (Wild)], and ['Mayor Forever ready to cede to Pintabone' (Panto)]". The mailer was paid for by "Amy for Northampton" so once those campaign finance reports are filed, surely our research will reveal that those PAC's contributors are "gay enough" also.
