Business Matters To Interview Lead FBI Agent in Fed Ed Takedown

WFMZ-TV69's Business Matters, which features host Tony Iannelli, will be doing a one-on-one interview with retired FBI agent Scott Curtis. He's the G-man who spearheaded a federal investigation into Allentown and Reading corruption, leading to the downfall of both cities' Mayors. The show is being taped December 10, between noon and 1 pm, at The Banana Factory, 315 Columbia St, Bethlehem, Pa.

I will be very interested in what Curtis thinks about the current state of Lehigh Valley government and its players.

WFMZ-TV69 Business Matters Show on Fake News Tonight - Honest!

This time last Monday, I told you that WFMZ-TV69's Business Matters' would be kicking off its new season that very night at 7:30 pm. I told you it would be a show on Fake News, hosted by Tony Iannelli and starring me (and three other completely forgettable guys.) As it happens, my report to you was Fake News. The new season actually starts tonight. WFMZ, which prides itself on being family-oriented, wanted to wait until all the guests were released from the hospital.

One of them, Dean Browning, had his jaw wired shut. I can't remember whether it was I or Tony who did that. He may never speak again.

Before you get worked up over my violent actions, I want you to know every guest signed a release in advance. Besides, Dean had it coming. He was kicking Martin Till's bald head like a soccer ball and screaming, "G-0-A-L-L-L-L!."

It's the first time I've ever seen Martin Till's head used for anything.

Till was released from the hospital late last week. It took doctors that long to realize there really is nothing in there.

Some of the show's technical crew were hospitalized as well. During one of the breaks, Ron Angle crashed the studio and did a strip tease Most of them have now decided to take a vow of celibacy.

Police were called in to make arrests, but we're all white. I told them Tony Phillips was at Bucky Boyle Park, so they rushed over there.

WFMZ-TV69's Business Matters begins its new season tonight at 7:30 pm. Host Tony Iannelli has a number of distinguished panelists to talk about Fake News. He also has me. I believe I was there as a pretty face. I would drive ratings up with my good looks and obvious sex appeal.  I do think that using a cement truck for my make-up was unnecessary and a bit cruel.

It was actually a pretty good show, except for Trump-acolyte Dean Browning. I put him into a headlock about half way through the show, but he countered by grabbing my crotch and we both spilled onto the floor and rolled around. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Ron Angle appeared and began kicking both of us. Then Steve Barron and Ken Kraft dove in and everyone was rolling around while someone shaved Tony Iannelli's head. Then the Allentown police arrived, even though this is in Salisbury Township.

"I thought you only mess with blacks," I shouted at one cop who actually threw his Tazer and baton away.

"Tazer? I don't need no steenkin' tazer," he said as he joined the fracas.

It was very informative.

The show ended after Iannelli morphed into the Predator and began removing people's spines. That's a tad too graphic for family television, if you ask me.

Updated 1 pm: I've just been informed that WFMZ has delayed the airing of this show by a week. The station wants to wait until everyone is out of the hospital.

Angle Makes Another BM

He's stirred up a shitstorm in Lower and Upper Mount Bethel Townships over ... well ... shit. He's none other than Ron Angle, the indomitable Northampton County Bulldog. He just made another BM.

That's right, folks. Ron was on Tony Iannelli's Business Matters last night, talkin' shit. Nobody does it better, not even Richard Sherman. He and I rolled around in the gutters with Lehigh County Democratic activist Bar Johnston (no relation to Archibald) and political strategist Michael Fleck.

We dissected the November election, talked a little about the upcoming Governor's race, and I got a shot in about the Sletvold nomination. Angle tried to keep a straight face while defending it.

Nobody was killed, but Fleck did let the air out of Angle's tires.

And I stole a Tony Iannelli coffee mug.

The Great NIZ Debate: Who Won?

WFMZ-TV 69's Business Matters broadcast the great NIZ debate tonight. Allentown blogger Michael Molovinsky and LU's Dr. Stephen Thode teamed up against NIZ cheerleaders Michael Fleck, Sy Traub and Jeff Barber. (You can see the debate here).

I'm obviously biased, but I'd give this one to Molovinsky and Thode, hands down, both on substance and style.

Fleck, who is being paid both by Allentown Mayor Edwin Pawlowski and the trade unions, came on way too strong, interrupting people and attempted to shout them down. He hysterically used the word "hysteria" nine times. At one point, as he ranted, I thought his crazy eyes would pop right out of his head.

Fleck also contradicted himself.  He alternately claimed that the NIZ is a "first time piece of legislation," but later claimed that other states have NIZs.

He also contradicted the Mayor and Allentown officials. Pawlowski, in his latest missive to country bumkis, claimed there would be 240 FT jobs. An Allentown powerpoint claims 750. But Fleck talks about "thousands" of jobs being poached from New Jersey.
Fleck also claimed that Townships originally were opposed to KOZs. On what planet was that?

Here are some debate highlights.

Michael Molovinsky: "Usually in good government, you have a little bit of due diligence and consensus before you dig the hole."

"I want to start a movement to save the hole. We did very nice with Mayor Heydt's hole. We tore down Hess', we had a hole, it sat there for a couple of years, PPL came in, built the Plaza ... Let's keep Pawlowski's hole."

Steve Thode: "Comparing the NIZ with the casino is like comparing apples and hand grenades."

"All you're doing is reshuffling the deck chairs of the Titanic."

Sy Traub: "This Bill and the NIZ proposal offers the first real opportunity to make a major difference in the redevelopment of Allentown."

"Anytime there's change, there's going to be concern and angst."

Jeff Barber: "This [the displaced merchants] was a bunch of cancer, and we cut the cancer out of Allentown."

Steve Thode: "The people who lived there are going to be happy to hear you called them cancer. Which cancer was the merchants?"

Michael Molovinsky: "This was a classist, almost racist move."

Jeff Barber: "Without a healthy Allentown, you're not going to have a healthy Lehigh Valley."

Michael Molovinsky: "I'm very happy for Mr. Reilly and his children and his grandchildren, but they have to figure out a way that the rest if Allentown can benefit from this project."

Who do you think won?

Updated 9:00 AM: WFMZ-TV69 has a more neutral account of the debate. Reporter John Craven notes that Bethlehem Township Commissioners took no action on Allentown's latest settlement offer. Actually, the offer was rejected on Friday.

Who Won the Great NIZ Debate?

Fleck in Hanover, where he orchestrated union invasion

I'm nizzy from all the NIZ news on Thursday.

Unless you've been living on Neptune, you probably know the NIZ is Allentown's 130-acre Neighborhood Improvement Zone, the only one of its kind in the country. All state taxes and EIT generated by businesses inside that zone can be used to fund improvements like a hockey arena, luxury hotel, office space and parking garages.

Created by a 2009 law that could only ever apply to Allentown, the NIZ is unpopular with surrounding communities because they will lose the EIT generated by their residents working inside the NIZ. It's also unpopular with office building developers because it creates an uneven playing field in which their tenants can be poached to move into the NIZ, where the rents are cheaper.

Yesterday afternoon for WFMZ's Business Matters taped the Great NIZ Debate. The show airs Monday night, 8 PM.

As a disinvited panelist, I thought it would be bad form for me to show up and cover the event. But The Morning Call's Bill White and Matt Assad were both there.

Dr. Steven Thode, director of the Murray H. Goodman Center for Real Estate Studies, teamed up with Allentown blogger Michael Molovinsky. They both oppose the NIZ in its current form. Thode and Molovinsky tangled with three NIZ cheerleaders:  Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski's campaign consulant and paid trade unions consultant Michael Fleck;  Allentown Neighborhood Improvement Zone Development Authority (ANIZDA) Chairman Sy Traub; and NIZ realtor and financial maven Jeff Barber. Tony Iannelli, who hosted the debate, is pro-arena and a regular Edwin Pawlowski campaign contributor.

Traub claimed that Pawlowski had sent him because Hizzoner wanted someone with more knowledge about the NIZ than the Fleckster or Fleck.

On Monday night, we'll see for ourselves who won this debate. But her's what I've been able to gather, which is strictly second hand.

Mike Fleck constantly interrupted other people, called Thode "insane", and said "he could care less" if Trexlertown becomes a ghost town.

Fleck tried to compare the NIZ to the casino, at which point Thode responded, "You are comparing apples to hand grenades."

The casino is actually the anti-NIZ. Bethlehem shares revenue with numerous other municipalities, including an annual $4.5 million payment to Allentown. But the NIZ, in contrasts sucks money and businesses from other municipalities.

Sy Traub left after the first half of the taping. Everyone I have spoken to tell me that Tony Iannelli's fast-paced style was too much for Traub, who came off like a deer caught in the headlights. His heart was clearly not in it. When Dr. Thode held up a carton of cigarettes to illustrate what a windfall the cigarette tax would be for the NIZ, all Traub could say was, "That's not true." He had nothing to back it up.

Jeff Barber replaced Traub after "halftime." After his "God, I love Allentown" speech, Molovinsky challenged him on the tenants displaced from the NIZ. Barber came off like a racist (something about "those people" not maintaining their properties) and Molovinsky called him on it.

Molovinsky was low key, and from what I'm told, came across as the voice of reason.

Go figure!

Dr. Thode's Tag Team Partner in the Great NIZ Debate? ... Moi

Yesterday, I told you that Tony Iannelli will be hosting a NIZ debate during a Thursday taping of WFMZ's Business Matters.

From Lehigh University, weighing in at 160 lbs, Steve (the Doctor) Thode will square off against a pro-NIZ contingent consisting of Mike (the Fleckster Wrecker) Fleck, Sara (Celtic Thunder &) Hailstone and Iannelli himself.

They don't stand a chance.

Last night, I received a desperate call from a Business Matters producer. Looks like the Bombastic Blogger, yours truly, will now serve as the Doctor's tag team partner.

One of my fans has already commented, "How can someone like you, with your baggage be a credible person on this show?"

Good point, but look at our opponents.

The Great NIZ Debate

This Thursday, Lehigh University's Dr. Stephen Thode will debate the NIZ at a Business Matters taping, hosted by pro-NIZ Tony Iannelli.  In addition to going up against the moderator, Thode will face Mike Fleck, Allentown Mayor Edwin Pawlowski's campaign consultant. For good measure, NIZ cheerleaders will add Allentown's DCED Director, Sara Hailstone.

This doesn't seem like a fair fight.

There should be at least two or three more pro-NIZ people ... if they can find them.

Don't know when the show will air, but it should be a hoot.

Happy 60th Birthday, Tony Iannellii

Business Matters host Tony Iannelli was surprised over the weekend, at some swanky country club, for his 60th birthday. His fiancee, whom I've never met, somehow pulled it off. Ron Angle, who attended with his wife Sharon, called to tell me that most of the LV's movers and shakers, Republican and Democrat, were there. What's more, everyone had a blast.

Besides Ron Angle, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski was there. So was WAEB's radio host Bobby Gunther Walsh, soon-to-be former State Rep. Jenn Mann, Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan, Lehigh County Exec Don Cunningham, etc., etc.

I can also tell you, from my own experience, that they were there because Tony is a genuinely likable person. Over the years, I have seen a number of anonymous shots taken at him, both here and elsewhere. But I can honestly say I don't think the guy has a mean bone in his body.

He's even nice to me!

So if you see Tony in the next few days, wish him a happy 6oth.

Despite NIZ, Pa. a Bad Place to Do Business

Although Allentown's "transformational" NIZ might succeed in poaching businesses from other locations in the Lehigh Valley, don't expect to see out-of-state companies make their way to the City Without Limits any time soon. That's because Pa. business is saddled with the worst or near-worst state tax burden in the nation, according to The Pittsburgh Tribune.

On top of a 9.99% corporate income tax rate (second highest in the country), a comprehensive analysis done by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation reveals Pennsylvania is just a lousy place to do business, in nearly every category.

Here's some of the disturbing rankings:

Corporate HQs: - 50

R & D Facilities - 50

Call Centers - 45

Distribution Center - 48

Retail - 47

Capital-Intensive Manufacturing - 9

Labor-Intensive Manufacturing - 26.

The only kind of business that thrives is an established capital-intensive company, which is permitted to exclude sales made out of state.

State house candidate Mike Schlossberg, who is running in an uncontested race for Jennifer Mann's seat, believes he can fix all this is "by closing the Delaware tax loophole and then dedicated a portion of the recovered tax revenue to a gradual decrease of the CNI [corporate net income]."

In other words, punish business even more.

Instead of enacting kooky schemes like the NIZ or ranting about the Delaware loophole that evil corporations use, future State Rep. Schlossberg and State Senator Pat Browne might actually consider some meaningful reforms in the way corporations are taxed.

In Senator Browne's own words, "This should be obvious."

Jesse Jackson: "We Need Each Other"

Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson visited Moravian College yesterday to deliver a speech at Johnston Hall. Right before that, he taped a one-on-one interview with Business Matters' Tony Iannelli. Rev. Mike Dowd, a former Trustee at Moravian Theological Seminary, was able to lure the controversial preacher. Believe it or not, I was there. I'll tell you what I thought of Jackson, and give you a sneak peak of what he said to Tony.

When he came in, I thought his entourage would consist of all kinds of publicists and personal assistants. Instead,  two college professors - Moravian's Grace Ji-Sun Kim and Lehigh's James B Peterson - were his escorts. I expected him to be loud and brash. Instead, he was subdued, almost meek. If someone wanted a picture with him, he was only too happy to comply. He was genial to everyone.

Tony, who was counting on a hot and fiery interview, began to look worried.

Another thing that struck me was Jackson's size. At age 70, he still towers over most people. He also has a penchant for sports metaphors when he talks. He still looks a lot more like a professional athlete than a preacher. As it happens, he did reject a professional baseball contract after high school.

Once the lights went on and the camera began to roll, the Jackson we all know came to life. He blasted away.

What made him an activist? - It all started when Jackson was arrested for trying to use a public library in the segregated South.

How is the U.S. today? - "We're a different nation, 50 years later," he said. "We're the best we've ever been." But he adds that 53 million Americans are still food insecure and in poverty. He worries about the widening gaps between the "haves" and "have nots." He detects a "growing sense of anger in this country," and stresses that "we need each other."

What about Barack Obama? - Jackson calls Obama the "captain of the ship," but is concerned that there are "those who will sink the ship just to get the President." When Obama is criticized as the "food stamp President," and his Christianity and citizenship are challenged. Jackson maintains these are "coded words."

"He came in against tremendous odds. Our automotive industry was collapsing. We're now climbing to number One again. That's a victory on his watch.

"We attack Obamacare. The fact of the matter is, pre-existing conditions are cared for now. Going to school, age 21, don't have a job, and you want to go on your parents' insurance plan? We have that now.

"Talk about 100,000 troops in Iraq? They're home now.

"Complaint about losing jobs? We're gaining jobs now."

What about his "Hymietown" remark? - "I never stop reaching out to people. All you can do when you make a mistake is have a contrite heart, seek forgiveness and redemption and move on."

Martin Luther King. - Jackson calls him a "scholar activist" who "knocked down walls and built bridges. His impact is far beyond what is discussed today."

Angle & Browning: You Won't Have Us to Kick Around Anymore

If you're expecting bitterness and sour grapes, there was little evidence of it yesterday, when two losers - Ron Angle and Dean Browning - appeared as guests on Tony Iannelli's Business Matters. They were there to answer this question - What the Hell do voters want, anyway?

Apparently, not Angle or Browning.

Angle, a 12-year veteran of Northampton County Council, was its President in 2010. Browning has chaired the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners for the last two years. Both were defeated at the polls.

Dean's defeat comes from those who want less government and less spending. His conservative credentials were called into question. This is because he refused to go along with a kooky scheme to send a budget back to the Executive, after he had spent most of a year working with Cunningham on the finances with no help from other Commissioners. Dean then bucked his own party and voted for a 16% tax hike, never a popular thing to do in the best of circumstances.

Never mind that he voted his conscience.

Angle's defeat is a bit more complicated. There were many factors, some of which were his own doing. But a major factor in his loss is that he was the Poster Boy of the Sell Gracedale movement. His defeat comes at the hands of those who want more government and more spending.

They were both smiling yesterday, in pretty good spirits despite stinging defeats. "The Emperor has been dethroned," joked Angle. "I'm in consultation with the military and we seize control the 1st of the year. There will be hell to pay." Off the air, he told me I'm the only guy he's ever seen who has a head like a condom, and wondered whether I was there to do a Trojan commercial.

This is my friend.

A little more reflective, Dean Browning has a pretty good explanation for what happened. He noted most voters have very little interaction with County government. They have little need to dial 911, use Human Services or sit in a courtroom. Those things all cost money, yet there is little room to cut. "People want less taxes, less spending and they want all that without a reduction in services," he noted. "If they [the new Commissioners] can do that, we ought to send them to Washington." Angle calls this the "Gimmes."

Paraphrasing Henry Clay, Dean added, "I'd rather be right than be County Commissioner."

In his four years as a Commissioner, Dean made government more transparent and accountable. Thanks to him, campaign finance reports are now on Lehigh's web page. He also spearheaded the movement to videotape Commissioner meetings. He also pushed through legislation that required unions to make concessions. He will be missed.

Then Dean started asking me why my head looks like a condom, and ruined it all.

The show airs on December 12. I made a cameo, which will drive away half the audience.

You Can Only Do So Much With Make Up

... or as my Dad used to like to tell me, "You can't shine shit."

Taping started a good half hour late for yesterday's Business Matters. Reason? Purple-tied Mike Schlossberg. I knew there was going to be trouble when they had him up on a lift. Mike's brilliant make-up artist had a real challenge on her hands.

She eventually broke out a few jackhammers and Mike came out looking pretty good.

At least his head does not look like a condom.

Gracedale - The Sequel

Ron Angle, stuck in court, was unable to make WFMZ-TV69's Business Matters yesterday. But I had a pretty good replacement tag team partner - Northampton County Exec John Stoffa.

The Fake Rev was there, recounting some of his daily conversations with Jesus. When he started saying how much he respects Stoffa, I nearly barfed. On his hate blog, the phony preacher has called Stoffa "dishonorable," suggested he'll soon be wearing an orange jump suit, and even claimed Stoffa is on the take.

"I'm not on the take," Stoffa clarified yesterday, with a wry little smile.

Union thug Justus James, sitting next to me, at one point stuck his hand in my face and shouted, "Quiet!" Of course, all that did was encourage me to talk even more about the giant inflatable rat he hauled in during his "good faith" negotiating session with the County.

According to The Express Times' Sarah Cassi, who wore a very nice dress to cover this show, the sequel was more like Hardball than Jerry Springer.

I don't watch TV.

How To Make Ron Angle Seem Like A Normal Dude

Put a bottom-feeding blogger like me next to him. Ron Angle looked fairly restrained, perhaps even statesmanlike, during Monday night's Business Matters on WFMZ-TV69. Steelworker union prez Gerry Green, a genuinely good person, looked like he wished he were somewhere else.

Me? I was the same asshole you read here. I'm not running for anything and don't care whose toes I step on. I was there primarily to expose the Fake Rev as the phony he is, and to stop some of the garbage being spewed. The Gracedale Goons lived up to the moniker I've given them. You can see the video of the Business Matters show concerning the fate of Graceland here.

The new owner has plans to make Graceland profitable, as you can see above.

There Will Be a Big BM Tonight!

Most local television is about as entertaining as watching paint dry. But tonight's Business Matters, which will air on WFMZ-TV69 at 8 PM, was so wild that The Morning Call did a story about it last Sunday.

Naturally, it's all about Graceland.

I went after the Fake Rev. and got him.

This charlatan refers to me as a "dipso" on his "I love Jesus" blog, and claims the "light of Jesus" will expose us all. Apparently, they were all "set up" to act like assholes by Mike Schlossberg, who produces the show and was actually screaming at them to be quiet.

Updated 10:45 AM: Bethlehem Dem Party Boss Jim Schlener touts Business Matters show. - In a mass email, Schlener tells the party faithful to tune in.

Please tune in tomorrow at 8pm on channel 69 (Business Matters) to see a debate on the sell [sic] of Gracedale !!!

Gracedale Goons Storm Business Matters

Last time I was on WFMZ's Business Matters, hosted by Tony Iannelli, it really should have been the last time I was on Business Matters. Express Times editor Joe Owens and I rolled around in the gutter. A Morning Call reporter ran out of the place in tears.

That's the kind of damage we bottom-feeding bloggers can do.

Believe it or not, I was there again Wednesday. Producer Mike Schlossberg wanted to do a show on Gracedale, and was able to see the Gracedale Goons in action for himself. They packed the audience, along with LV Labor Council Recording Sec'y John Weiss. He's one of the union dudes who was handing out "Elect John Callahan" flyers at an October "Save Gracedale" rally. His union president wife is one of the petition circulators who claimed to have obtained one signature every 35 seconds on election day. Even Judge Baratta was forced to conclude she had gone too far.

Ron Angle, teamed up with me on the Sell Gracedale side, brought two friends. I had asked a few friends to come, too, but forgot to tell them what time they had to be there. I told Ron it looked like we were heavily outnumbered.

"What do you mean, we, you widow-hater," snarled Angle.

Uh oh.

On "God's side," as he always claims, was none other than Fake Rev Mario Martinez. As he sat in the make-up chair before the show, this Phony Preacher kept repeating "Angle is Satan, Angle is Satan."

Alrighty then.

The Fake Rev was joined by USW union boss Jerry Green, a genuinely good person who seemed embarrassed to be there.

Things got out of hand pretty quickly. When the Fake Rev started braying about "widows and orphans" at Gracedale, I interrupted to point out that there's no orphanage at the County-owned nursing home.

That brought hoots and hollers from the Gracedale Goons, who can abide no contradictions. But I wasn't done. I pointed out that, contrary to his constant claims, the Fake Reverend represents nobody and that he got his ordination papers from a Cracker Jacks box.

The Gracedale Goons screamed and yelled throughout the show, trying to shout down Angle or me whenever we made a point.

To their credit, Jerry Green and Ron were fairly subdued, but I pretty much acted the way I act here. Except this time, I had my enemy right in front of me. I pointed to audience members who padded Gracedale initiative petition numbers with duplicate signatures, and noted the pervasive election fraud from this mob.

After the show was over, one of the Goons started poking at me, and he was ushered away. Mike Schlossberg wanted to have Michelle Young escort me to my car because she's the toughest person in the room, but I declined. I did go out a side door, which put me at the far end of the parking lot.

They were all waiting for me by the front door, and when they saw me, started yelling again. But I got in my truck and followed Angle out of there as they continued to prove that the moniker "Gracedale Goons" is very apt.

I doubt the Fake Rev wanted to pray.

Although this show is scheduled to air on April 4, I honestly don't know if it will make it past the censors.

I've told you before about my latest, and probably last, trip to WMFZ-TV 69's Business Matters. I was there to do a show pitting one bottom feeding blogger against three "real" journalists. They never had a chance. You see, before my show, I got all fired up watching Ron Angle and Michelle Young as a tag team against Mike Schlossberg and Jude Denis. (See video here). Many people died.

Tonight, if you're interested in an intelligent discussion of the New Media's impact on journalism, you won't find it on Channel 69. But if you tune in at 8 PM, you can see me kick the shit out of Express Times Editor-in-Chief Joe Owens and Morning Call Highbrow Jon Micek about their lousy election coverage.

I also do a Jake Towne impersonation.

Now Owens has deluded himself that he came out on top, and he did make a comeback, but Angle gave me the match on points.

Micek just ran out of there and headed back to the land of midnight payraises, where everyone is in love and he only has to talk to politicians.
