UPDATED: Easton City Council's Taiba Sultana Jailed After Domestic Dispute at Her Home: "I Am Outraged!"

Lehigh Valley News, WFMZ-TV69 and Lehigh Valley Live have all reported that Easton City Council member Taiba Sultana, 39, was arrested at her home yesterday afternoon. She's been charged with misdemeanor simple assault and summary harassment as a result of a domestic dispute. From what I've been able to piece together, it involved children at the home.

Her most recent Facebook entry includes a flattering photo of herself with the caption "serve, pray, slay."

I sure hope that she didn't mean "slay" literally.

According to the Lehigh Valley Live account, Sultana slapped, punched and head-butt the victim, who sustained what appear to be minor injuries.

Magisterial District Judge Richard Yetter set bail at 10% of $20,000 when she was unable to provide an address at which she'd reside during the pendency of the charges. She was sent to Northampton County's jail in lieu of bail.

That probably explains why she never answered my call.

The charges are now available on the web portal for Pa.'s Unified Judicial System, and show she's been charged with simple assault as a second degree misdemeanor and summary (not misdemeanor) harassment. Easton police filed the charges and her preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 14, 1:30 pm.  No attorney is listed for her at this point, but I expect that to change very soon..

Typically, defendants charged with these types of offenses are eligible for a special program for first offenders, in which the slate is wiped clean after successful completion of a period of probation. A defendant charged with this kind of offense is usually released on her own recognizance, but she needs to find another place to stay out to avoid a possible repetition.

"I am outraged" is what Sultana said on Facebook after then Easton City Council candidate Lance Wheeler was arrested for allegedly threatening children on a Wilson Area School District bus.

She must be really pissed now.

Sultana, who immigrated here from Pakistan, is Easton City Council's first Muslim member. As an elected official for the City, she should be setting an example for the people she represents. She is, but it's a bad example. In addition to the current criminal charges, she's been cited several times for code violations at her Vista Drive home. She also recently claimed that Easton City Council, one of whose members is black, " think the black and brown community is criminal and dangerous ... ."

Up until now, she's been politically ambitious. She's run for Mayor and lost, but has her eyes set on a State Senate or State House seat. She was also very much behind her husband's campaign for both magisterial district judge and county controller.

I think it's safe to say her political career is over.

  2. I delayed bedtime for this post and I’m a bit disappointed, Bernie. I am absolutely no fan of the councilwoman’s, but let’s hold on to what makes our legal system tops — innocent until proven guilty.

  3. Of course she's innocent until proven guilty. But she's also been charged with domestic assault. Nothing about my story reaches any final conclusion regarding her culpability. But politically, she's toast. She already marginalized herself in the Easton community, and this pretty much ruins her.

  4. I wonder who she allegedly got into a Pier 6 brawl with?

  5. I'd have to disagree and say her political career is safe. In a Democrat county, I'm sure there's enough of them willing to put her into higher office. After all, look at Biden- he's doing just fine.

  7. Maybe they should ban her from all city council meetings 🤔 I love how she IS innocent until proven guilty. However, over on willow Park road such luxuries do not exist!

  10. Don’t be so sure her political career is over. She’ll wear this as a badge of honor and proclaim she’s a victim of the racist police and criminal justice system. We like to talk about how divided the Republican Party is, the democrats are as well. The far left controls the party now and they’ll make her a hero. Heck, the California legislature just passed a law out of committee that, if signed by the governor, would require judges to consider race when sentencing. It’s totally unconstitutional but they don’t care! This is what controls the democrat party now. 55% of democrats polled think socialism is ok. They’re nuts!

  17. Hmmmm....I wonder if those posting about Dems voting for anybody even if they're criminals are Trump backers. C'mon folks talk about backing anybody just because of party affiliation! His backers are the poster children for that kind of blind loyalty! BTW, I'm a Dem who has never been a Sultana fan. She is the ultimate opportunist. If these charges are true, her career is done. She has pushed too many buttons in Dem circles, this would break the camels back, to mix metaphors.

  18. These far left activists seem to have impulse control and anger management problems. They’re angry people. They’re as bad, maybe worse than the MAGA crowd. Try to have a fact based, free and fair exchange of ideas with a squad leftie, it’s impossible. They just call you a racist and take their toys and go home.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well Bernie, by saying her political career is over you just assured her of reelection LOL. Your track record hasn't been good lately. You said Fetterman would lose after the debate performance showed how much neurological damage he really has. if someone with severe and obvious brain damage can be elected to the senate, a liberal with an arrest can be reelected to council in a liberal city. They may make a hero out of her who knows............

  21. You think her political career is over, but the majority of voters will never hear about this, nor will they care. Politicians can say and do whatever they want now, because people do not read newspapers, or read news, or care about drama. Trump's behavior desensitized everyone.

  26. I concur with others who don't think her political career will be sidelined. This "misunderstanding" will be quickly forgotten and she will pander to the block of voters who like her style of governance. Accountability for one's actions is a thing of the past.

  35. I completely despise her and find her to be an obnoxious opportunist, but I do not think for one second that this will hurt her political career. Your average Easton voter either won't even realize that this happened, will forget by the time the next election she is in comes around, or will know it happened but not give a shit and will pull the lever for her anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Clearly you haven’t forgotten how Palowski won re-election while fighting charges that he illegally rigged contracts and received kickbacks. And after winning again he remained mayor up until the time the jury said guilty and he was drug off to federal prison. If that’s a situation where someone can get re-elected, I wouldn’t say a misdemeanor assault would persuade her voters very much. Unfortunately.

10:44 is correct (other than the Trump comment). Without any detailed study or proof otherwise, I can assure you than the typical voter does not read the paper (online/printed/app) end to end daily nor watch WFMZ (or whatever their local news station is) daily. Those who do read the paper and watch their local news already know what's going on and are the ones who are already informed and often weigh information when casting their ballot.

This will fade and her only threat is a Democrat challenger in the primary. If she wishes to continue on Easton City Council or aspires to a county or state position, she will get the support of the Democrats if she survives the primary.

In a slight change of topic: per the WFMZ 10 PM broadcast tonight, she's already raising an issue with the fact that the Easton Chief of Police showed up at her door when she was taken into custody; citing that as unusual given the nature of the charges.

  45. The citizens of Easton should call for her removal if the charges stick but I also hope they call to removal of Hopkins, their disgraced Public Works Director. She will end up in ARD like Hopkins and the charges will be wiped.

“Drain the swamp” could be the next election’s campaign slogan. Easton is changing. These hot heads don’t belong in office.

  47. Hopkins removal ? This guy had mindset of a Scout leader , these boys were doing something that was not kosher. He challenged them , Mr. Hopkins is a real man, a tax payer, takes care of his family and is responsible,
Should not ever have been in this position. Mr. Hopkins is a fine man and this system wants to discredit him? I personaIly have observed him, This , man was unjustly accused . This man mentally tried to get under their mental capacities about what they were doing so ."
… kids were doing. These kids were not responsible for their actions, where responsible for their actions were part of Hopkin s and Hopkins’s wants them to be as learning progress. Hopkins is harmless as an individual,he wouldn’t step on a bug, or hurt anyone . I’ll testify to that in court.I’ve never been in his home or had a drink with him ,but I’ve observed him . He’s an honest man. And this case is a disruption in criminal justice. Call me in ,I’ll tell you. But someone will like me showing up . I don’t care. Right is right wrong is wrong .
