Northampton County's boroughs have historically been its blue-collar blue-voting bastions. They were home to those who worked in the rag mills and cement companies. They voted Democratic, but that's no longer true. In the 2020 Presidential, Trump captured the vote in Bangor, Bath, Chapman, East Bangor, Glendon, Nazareth, Northampton, N Catty, Pen Argyl, Portland, Roseto, Stockertown, Tatamy, Walnutport, West Easton and Wind Gap. Biden won only in Freemansburg, Hellertown and Wilson Borough. So you might expect Lamont McClure to be pummeled in this year's Exec race, especially with Biden tumbling in the polls. But now that the canvassing is complete, we know McClure outperformed Biden significantly.
McClure won Nazareth (764-568), the home of many Steve Lynch supporters. McClure beat Lynch in Lynch's backyard, taking Northampton 1,199-963. He pulled off a close win in Bath, 245-241, where Lynch had many of his strategy sessions. McClure also won in N Catty (357-172), Freemansburg (221-118), Hellertown (755-552), and Wilson Borough (627-356).
The candidates tied in Glendon with 27 votes apiece.
Lynch prevailed in W. Easton (101-90), Bangor (440-417), Chapman (31-12), Pen Argyl (403-306), Portland (91-45), Roseto (226-187), Stockertown (132-117), Tatamy (174-1300, Walnutport (211-201) and Wind Gap (265-247).
McClure's strong showing in the boroughs can be regarded as a vindication of his first four years in office. It can also be regarded as a stinging rebuke of the extremism that Lynch brought to the race.
Lynch was a deeply flawed candidate, and I would not say the same for McClure. I can't believe Lynch did as well as he did. Several people must have voted "R R R R R R R R R R" just to vote R.
ReplyDeleteWE know you love, love, luvvvv'''McClure but once again you find gold where there is only fools gold. McClure ran against a crazy nut that even most republicans could not believe was on the ticket. Still Lynch got over 29 thousand votes. With all the sluff form Lynch as well as McClure spending a few hundred thousand on his making sure you knew about Lynch, the McClure victory was actually kind of lame.
ReplyDeleteA half way decent republican candidate would have easily given McClure a run for his money. Hell, a decent female candidate would have probably beaten McClure in the0p0 democratic primary. He is not a great candidate and d poor county executive. He will have a much tougher second term than his easy forst term. Gracedale is a mess, employees hate the guy and you get the sense that even members of his own party are tiered of his games in county government. He is good at canned speeches and pr events. Is the guy ever at the courthouse?
"I got over a thousand soldiers ready to go."

5:53,
ReplyDeleteFirst, it is insulting to post an OT comment on a topic that took time to research. Second, the fact that this story has been picked up by a national news outlet indicates you are full of shit.
Please keep fighting Lynch. Please keep fighting Trump. Please keep tilting at caricatures and ignore other candidates. Midterms are going to be fun when you realize you wasted a year masturbating to guys who don't matter and won't be the ones who defeat you next year, just 11 months away.
ReplyDeleteThe other writer is correct. If they would have put Mickey mouse on the Republican ticket probably would have won. The simple truth is the majority of Americans not just Republicans loved what trump did as a president. Only just only wish he would have put down his phone. With the posts and the insults. Why ??? The reason ppl like Tom Brady is because he wins and stands there with a smile and takes it in. Doesn't run around shoving his rings in everyone's face insulting the other side. Trump could have gone down as one of the greatest presidents, but instead ppl will remember tweets and insults instead of progress for our country. Energy independence, unemployment at all time lower for everyone. I can keep on going but ppl just remember the stupid comments. It's hard to swallow as a Republican. And our RNC of Northampton county puts some idoit on the ticket that the only thing ge knows is insults. The prize was there for the taking and put that guy on the other side. They have to understand ppl vote locally by what's going on nationally. Not good but the truth.
ReplyDeleteNo bid deal beating Biden wait until you see what will happen to Biden and his buddies
ReplyDelete7:29 - "majority of Americans not just Republicans loved what trump did as a president"???? What did he do in 4 years other than provide an insane tax break for the 1% of Americans?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of majority, you do know that he lost both the electoral and popular vote right?
Twice impeached too but you don't want to hear that.
Well he scared the hell out of voters by painting lynch as a dangerous person. I saw the TV ads and they were not advertising what McClure was for...it happened to be an attack as usual. McClure couldn't win based on his policies.
ReplyDeleteLynch was and remains a scary guy who painted himself that way. McClure accomplished quite a bit in his first four years, from a forensic center to small business grants during Covid. You wouldn't know much about that bc you were selling "1 of 20" T-shirts.
ReplyDelete7:39 - I think the "majority" is a bit of a stretch, but do agree that Trump ultimately derailed his own Presidency and chances of reelection, not because of policy, but because of his behavior in office. That behavior is a very wide spectrum, from minor Twitter squabbles, arguing over how many people were at an inauguration held in poor weather, to major breeches in security protocols, with a whole lot in between.
ReplyDeleteHis mishandling of COVID is ultimately what cost him the most. A simple, unified, we're all in this together message would have bought him a lot of political goodwill and forgiveness for any economic stagnation. He just chose to pander to a base that would vote for him no matter what, so I don't see the political gain he received by taking that path.
Biden/Dems keep repeating the same mistakes that Trump and Republicans made, assuming that their elections was some message that the entire country wanted hard right or hard left policies.
I know that the infrastructure bill is getting bashed by a lot of Republicans, but not all, mainly because its Biden's, but the core of it is something that benefits all Americans. Biden needs to steer more towards the middle and score a few more of those type of "wins" in order to reduce the bleeding that will likely come next year.
Almost every data point demonstrates clearly how historically terrible Lynch was as a candidate. No amount of whining and crying to his supporters about "fraud" can hide the fact he was a historically shitty candidate. Shame on the Norco Republican Party for not recruiting a more serious candidate.
ReplyDeleteI would not brag about beating Biden -- He is the worsted of all time.
ReplyDeleteDoes McClure count small business grants as an accomplishment? Didn't he kinda just show up at the end to be delivery boy for fed money? That's like my kids taking credit for earning my money because they're the ones who spent it. Re: federal bucks: you and I may have paid more federal income tax than a rich loopholer like LaMont. One doesn't earn credit for showing up at the end with a cardboard check.
ReplyDeleteShame on the Norco Republican Party for not recruiting a more serious candidate.
ReplyDeleteWho? There was no one. What sane Republican would put themself through a campaign and the McClure smear machine for a job that pays so little?
McClure didn't run on his record. He ran viciously against the other guy. I saw the mailers.
ReplyDeleteLots and lots of mailers. He made the election a verdict on Trump/Lynch. A jury issuing a verdict on McClure's record would have put him in the electric chair, demanding public torture first. Lamont is a good lawyer and knew he needed a Plan B distraction from his horrific and deadly record. He was given a gift and he took it.
Now that the canvass is complete, I've done an analysis of the entire county, not just the boroughs. This includes the communities in which most Gracedale workers and resident families reside. McClure won everywhere. He won the townships. He won the boroughs. He won Nazareth, Upper Nazareth, Lower Nazareth, Bath and Northampton. It was important and necessary to define Lynch bc he is, in fact, dangerous. But McClure also sent out numerous flyers drawing attention to his own record of accomplishments over the past four years, which I've chronicled here.
ReplyDeleteAs for the deaths at Gracedale, one death alone is tragic. McClure did everything he could to help the residents. He had PPE in place before anyone bc EMS scoured the country. He set up an isolation ward before anyone. He recognized the disease was being brought in and took the necessary step of banning visitors while making tablets available so loved ones could still comminicate. He brought testing right into the home and, though you've criticized him for it, was quick to get the National Guard in there when many employees were afraid to come to work. He has 92% of the residents vaccinated, and there are currently zero cases. The only way a resident can get Covid is if a selfish, unvaccinated staffer brings it in. The deaths are tragic, but the actions taken by McClure actually saved lives.
Had Lynch been running the show, there'd be no need to worry about Gracedaqle bc all the residents would be dead with that anti-vaxer and anti-masker.
Had a decent Republican run, they could have discussed county issues. The simple reality is that McClure has been a good exec who has been frugal with the county pocketbook while voicing a moderate approach to issues while others jump to extremes.
Now that the election is over, drop the nonsense you know is untrue.
I'll grant that staffing is an issue at Gracedale, but guess what, Sherlock? It's an issue everywhere. I have a friend at Moravian Hall Square. She is a resident, and tells me the place is very short-handed. She only gets one shower a week, if that. And that's a top-notch home without the mentally and physically challenged people at Gracedale.
I am unable to post a comment so cryptic it makes no sense.
