From Bethlehem: During the first full week of April each year, the American Public Health Association brings together communities across the United States to observe National Public Health Week. Everyone deserves to live a long and healthy life in a safe environment. Working together with others, we can build healthier communities for our families and their children. Where we live, work, worship and play impacts each one of us and can determine how healthy we will be and how long we will live. Public health is important to all communities. This week we celebrate the power of prevention, advocate for healthy and fair policies and share strategies with our partners to champion a strong public health system.
In recognition of National Public Health Week, the Bethlehem Health Bureau is partnering with the Bethlehem Area Public Library to promote Child Abuse Prevention Month, also observed in April. Creating awareness of the significant impact physical, emotional and sexual abuse has on children is a collaborative role for all and will help to restore communities. “All individuals in our community are tasked with ensuring our children have safe, stable nurturing relationships and a healthy environment which is essential to prevent child abuse and neglect,” stated Mayor Robert Donchez.
The Bethlehem Health Bureau and the Bethlehem Area Public Library are collaborating with Pennsylvania’s Office of Victim Advocate to collect new pajamas for children placed in foster care through the County Children and Youth Agency. All size children’s pajamas are being collected through April at bins in the following locations:
Bethlehem Area Public Library
11 East Church Street, Bethlehem, PA 18018
2nd Floor Children’s Center
Bethlehem City Hall
10 East Church Street, 1st Floor
Bethlehem, PA 18018
