Who Will Replace Judge Anthoy Beltrami on NorCo's Bench?

According to several sources, NorCo Judge Anthony Beltrami plans to step down from the bench when his term is up at the end of next year. We'll know for sure when he notifies the Administrative Office of Pa Courts whether he plans to seek retention. His scholarly judicial opinions, among the finest I've ever read, will be missed. But he'll be able to devote more time to what he loves - harness racing. He's ranked as one of the best drivers in the country.  Who will replace Judge Beltrami if he does step down?

I've heard several names. Bob Eyer, who is currently the First Assistant DA, is one person. Others include Jeremy Clark, an Assistant City Solicitor, and Magisterial District Judges Vivian Zumas and Sandra McClure. There's also Nancy Aaroe, who ran a spirited campaign for judge last year, and Vic Scomilio, a Bethlehem lawyer and former county solicitor who has waged two campaigns.

I believe a McClure candidacy would be terrible optics at a time when her husband is seeking a third term as Executive.

Lisa Tresslar, NorCo's former custody master, should run. She is a Harvard Law grad and was Editor of the Law Review. It would put her on an even footing with three judges whose views on child custody differ starkly from hers. Moreover, she is a conservative Republican whose legal brilliance is admired by many Democrats, including me.

  1. Bernie, some times I think you have a spit personality. #1, McClure would be terrible. Ask those who come before her now. Although I do not have to stand before any judge at this stage of the game, from those who do, she is horrible. Its her way or the highway. I'm sure you'll get some responses, although they'll be anonymous. #2 Picking a Republican. I like your thoughts. And reasons. That's what scares me.

  2. I understand MDJ McClure is very happy being MDJ and will not be a candidate. However, she’d win quite easily in that crowd.

  3. How about MDJ Alicia Zito? Popular in the Slate Belt and her father was an excellent judge.

  4. I have seen this judge in action and he appears to be a compassionate man who is willing to help those who need a break. May he enjoy a healthy retirement. I do have a question for you, Bernie. You reference Tresslar being at odds with three judges. You have been clear in naming two, but who is the third?

  5. As a Judge, Tony is a great jockey.

  6. Scomilio should NO WAY BE JUDGE. He doesn't know the law. Look how he screwed up the letting go of Mancini. Cost the taxpayers alot of money. McCluelss's wife shouldn't get it either.

  9. Let’s go, Bob Eyer! Of the names given, he’s easily the best, brightest and smartest.

  10. Attorney Jenna Flisar is interested. She's a good lawyer and qualified.

  11. Jeremy Clark is the only worthy candidate on that list. Lisa was a great custody master, but unfortunately, I think she'd make a horrible judge. Just because you have a Harvard degree, doesn't make you right for a position. The rest of the people mentioned are laughable.

  12. Justice Sotomayor may be available soon. Susan Wild will also be free in January. The former may get kicked to the curb by her own party and the latter was given a sendoff by an informed and wise electorate.

  14. Judge Beltrami is top notch. Too bad he is moving on. Anyway, which one is my choice: Ray Lahoud or Ron Creazzo.

  17. Scumilio? Ignorant, arrogant, concerned only with himself. Not a judicial temperamental bone his body. The public should know how he repeatedly screwed up as Solicitor, but the worst was Mancini's unlawful termination. By the time the insurance premiums were jacked because of his pathetic attempt to be a lawyer, the County could have paid out of pocket for less. Please spare us that catastrophe.

  20. My favorite would be someone with the wisdom, awareness and knowledge of the law. Bernadino Ohare. Go for it.

  21. A judge should have experience being a trial lawyer

  22. And now Bernie we understand your stories about Lisa

  23. do you have to have a law degree to run for Judge. I don't think so. If that's the case (no degree) how about Ron Heckman.
