Why I Still Wear Masks Indoors

WHO recommends that people, even those who ate fully vaccinated, should continue wearing masks indoors because of concerns about community spread of the virulent Delta variant. I am following that recommendation. The protection masks provide is admittedly limited, but I've noticed I touch my face and rather prominent proboscis less often when I wear them. That makes me less likely for me to infect myself or others.  Plus, I'm told I'm very handsome when masked. Some have even suggested a bag.

I'm sorry this happened to you.

I hear plastic stops viruses.

TOTALLY off-topic, but congratulations to Bernie for not allowing the Ce-Ce Gerlach child abuse allegations go unreported. Fortunately, he is the watchdog for the community because the newspapers are asleep at the wheel.

My Cardiologist and Oncologist require I wear a mask in their offices

Will Cecelia Gerlach be required to don a mask during her legal proceedings? How can one scratch an itchy mask-covered nose when restrained by handcuffs? Asking for everybody ....

Only 1 bag? You are definitely a Double Bagger.

I will continue to wear a mask, as well. Two things...masks have been worn in Asian cultures for years. We Americans thought what we thought. Maybe some snickered. But, authorities indicate seasonal flu was at lowest numbers this year. That was a product of masking and less interaction. And, for we women...we only need to put on eyes to go out in public.

I would never question the right of someone else to wear a mask if they choose to do so, but I do have a question for those who choose to continue to wear them. If you're vaccinated and are not going to go maskless 99% percent of the time now, when will you? Current cases, especially in PA but also in the US as a whole, among vaccinated individuals are so low that there's almost no chance of contracting the virus (and if you do, it's very likely to be a mild case). The Delta variant is the current reason people are giving for being afraid to take off masks, but I think it's likely that this is simply going to be replaced in a couple months with a fear of a resurgence in the fall/winter. No doubt there will be something after that, and so on...

Somewhere along the way, we need to put COVID behind us. Current science, as reflected in CDC guidance and state guidelines says that time is now for vaccinated individuals. If cases return, this may change, but for vaccinated individuals with no health issues, I'd probably argue that continuing masking during the summer months is every bit as illogical as it was for individuals to refuse to wear a mask during the height of the pandemic.

Like you, I still wear a mask. I may continue wearing one long after the pandemic is declared over. I like that I can leave my dentures at home.

Masks are more effective than "minimally", but let's not get into my non-professional interpretation versus yours. I also continue to wear mine in most places, as I had my shots and I feel for the people in stores and such who have to deal with a steady stream of strangers.

The law caught up with Ce Ce Gerlach finally - off topic but a story you told us about well over a month ago.

@2:39 I am SURE that some people snickered in the past, seeing people in S Korea and elsewhere wearing masks in public. Yeah, we're Americans - we don't get whatever horrible diseases you do "over there". Nope - we're all human and subject to invisible deadly diseases, as our death toll reflects. And racism is running rampant also.

This kills me. Right after saying he would not question my right to wear a mask, that is precisely what he does. I explained why in my post. WHO is recommending vaccinated people to continue wearing them to prevent community spread of the Delta variant. Though vaccinated, I am not immune. I could contract it and not know it. Wearing a mask lessens the likelihood that I will give the virus to someone else. Naturally, I take the mask off if I am at work and no one is closer than a meter. And I am not a nut about it. But this is basic courtesy, something that appears to elude you.

News today indicates moderna vaccine effective against delta variants

If you can smell flatulence while wearing a mask, and if your glasses get steamed up, the virus can still getcha.

Masks are just another layer of protection. Although the vaccination helps reduce the likelihood of catching the virus, it does not completely stop it. And no one knows what it does with the variants that are growing. A mask does not completely stop things as well but it helps reduce risk.
So in my mind being vaccinated and also wearing a mask helps to reduce for what you know and what you do not know.

This is so classic! You would *never* question the right of someone to wear a mask, but you have a question about them wearing a mask. That is called a discrepancy. Do you brain?

I also continue to be masked although I was fully vaccinated at the end of February. I simply do not know enough about this illnesses to be certain that all is well without a mask. One of the readers said if we do not take off the mask after vaccination, then when? That is a good question; and my response is I do not know…but I do know it is not yet.

I wouldn't want to be on the shitty end of the stick as far as breakthrough infections go. I'll continue to wear one. BTW at Giant the other day I was the only mask wearer.

Not all Asian countries are mask wearers. Those who are mask wearers do so to protect themselves from stunning air pollution. Honesty leads to honest discussions.

Although I would never want to return to the nuttiness of Wolfe with his decisions with respect to what business needed to be closed, I still wear masks indoors when in businesses. I have the 2 dose vaccine but I don't know if I can transmit a silent infection to a vulnerable person. So many folks take immuno-suppressing medications or are dealing with serious illnesses that I don't want to possibly infect them. I don't know at age 74 how robust my immune system might be or if and when the vaccine needs a booster. Hating colds, I am someone who always used hand sanitizer after handling menu at restaurant or multiuse salt/pepper and ketchup bottles. I also avoided the salad bar madness. I recently went to a local restaurant and they have condiment bottles out but remove them and clean them after every diner. The waiter said it made sense to him and that he hopes they continue to wipe down bottles between customers.

Mask wearing is common in several Asian countries. It started in Japan during the 1918 Spanish flu outbreak, which was actually the American flu. It has continued and is prevalent in Japan, S Korea and part of China. They are worn for numerous reasons. There is a concern about microdust in S Korea and China. There is a concern about covid. There is a concern that keeping your face covered keeps you free from judgment. There is a desire to be polite. All these reasons are explored here: https://www.voanews.com/science-health/coronavirus-outbreak/face-mask-culture-common-east-new-west

My extended family is from Vietnam, and I do not think Vietnamese have a face mask culture.

I was at Giant last night. I do not know if I was the only one with no mask, but I was one of few. I still wear it at the gym.

Giant policy is that only ugly people continue to wear masks. Glad to hear you were in compliance. U still Da Ma Bernie!
