Trump to Declare Covid-19 National Emergency

Numerous news sources (I'll link Bloomberg) report that Donald Trump has scheduled a news conference at 3 pm today to declare a national emergency regarding the Covid-19 Crisis. This will allow state and local government too seek funding for expenses related to the fight against the virus.

In addition, he has agreed to organize a video conference with world leaders on Monday to coordinate an international response to the pandemic.

  1. Bernie, if I may report one thing you wrote. Making this an official National Emergency is a GOOD thing!

More funds available outside the reach of a dysfunctional (my opinion) Congress. No added funding added to the bottom of the document for pork projects having nothing to do with the virus.

  2. I agree this is a good thing. Ironically, it is members of the dysfunctional Congress you mention who implored Trump to do this, and many are Democrats.

  4. Obama declared emergency for swine flu - but only after 1,000 deaths. There would be 17,000 more.

Trump is declaring an emergency at 40 deaths.

  5. Gosh, if only there had been any indication before this that there was a problem!

  6. This situation WAS addressed early. VP Pence press conference on January 27. Two days later, flight restrictions to/from China were enacted.

  7. Having a national emergency obviously isn't what we prefer, but having the federal government provide help to the states most certainly is. Usually governors inform the White House when they need help, and they did so but Trump chose to stall, apparently because he didn't want to undercut his rosy scenario strategy. As it is, he still won't allow emergency use of Medicaid to facilitate medical treatment.

I've seen this BS about a 100 times today and that's what it is BS. If only people would spend two minutes doing research on the internet they'd see how stupid it makes them look This is why I find it so difficult to find patience with people like this. They simply click away spreading false information without a thought or care whether it's true.

Since this person seems to not have the capacity I'll help you out. Go Google Obama Response H1N1. There you'll find a couple hundred of sources that debunks Donald's tweet which he also claims.

It would be a blessing if people could think for themselves. Maybe the MAGA hats are too tight cutting off circulation to the brain?

You are correct. If people are home sick they're not getting paid so there is no tax to take out. I agree it's a much better idea to set up a trust fund for those affected and pay them something like we do with unemployment.

    Give us all $2,500
I'm not sure I agree. The $2,500 may seem a lot to or me but to some one making $100,000 their more likely to invest or save it then spend it. I sure fire way to jack up the economy is to increase the minimum wages. More tax revenue. More spending. It doesn't have to be an across the board increase, but rather apply to certain businesses we know can afford to pay more. Another way is to limit top management's salaries to no more then a certain amount if it's lowest paid employee.

    ReplyDelete
  11. their more likely
    I meant to say "they're"
    also
"more then a certain amount if it's lowest paid employee"
meant to say "amount of it's lowest...

I know how perfect people expect me to be perfect like them. Oops.. Sorry :-)

Sure, that's why we have such a surplus of test kits, respirators, and hospital beds--no?

And when did we first hear that the virus was serious? Why not restrict travelers from other hot-spots like S. Korea and Iran?

Some who have good expertise think there's a fair chance that next week we'll be looking a lot like Italy. Get back to me then.

  16. Amazing.
Now the Trumpkins, who stood by as Trump told us all the virus was a hoax, now try to convince us he took it seriously from the first warnings.

  17. The political bullshit continues. You people are all making fools of yourselves just like a few of the media do at the press conferences, not an attempt to have a clear understanding, but the hoped for gotcha moment. Many people are working to make the best of a bad situation, most of the critics have no knowledge or skills to do anything but flap their big mouths. This is a unique event, there is not a clear roadmap, it is an adjust daily to the changing conditions. There are many unanswered questions. I believe they are all doing a satisfactory job. I hear very little in alternative decisions. None of you really have a clue what you are talking about. A large bunch of fools.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 4,25 you are just a fool, all those questions are easily answered if you would listen, instead of talking bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 5:17 - You are SO right! I feel very confident about how this is being handled. This is something that NEVER happened before, under the same conditions. I understand many frequent posters would like to use this moment as a political advantage for them, These folks are the kind that need to be ignored. We need to listen to the experts on the front lines. The people doing the work. NOT rank partisans who ignorantly, hatefully, type away like that.

Again, take the time to watch today’s press conference. Try to watch the whole thing with without the color of politics jading what you take from it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I watch Hannity. This hoax is othing but a political stunt by a virus to undermine our greatest president. Trump is looking for the Democrat funded lab in China that developed it. He will be making some perfect phone calls to locate it.

My questions are rhetorical. The answer to all is: long before Trump decided to get off his ass and take even a little action. A hoax, indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 6:25, keep the dates January 27, and January 29 in your head. Action was taken immediately, before it came to our shores.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Some action was taken, much was not. Let's try it this way: when did Trump stop referring to the problem as a hoax?

    ReplyDelete
  24. 6.49 He never said IT was a hoax, He said that democrats were treating it like hoax, just like you.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 6:49 - I don’t remember specifically what Trump said about Wuhan Virus being a hoax. You will need to provide his exact, unedited, quotes. Of course, if you can provide that, then you already know the date it started. When ‘it’ ended, might be irrelevant because he never said that, and who could actually know when it ended, if he did once say it?

I’m going to GUESS, Trump said something about the NEWS COVERAGE being a hoax. That’s been known to happen, hasn’t it?

Regardless, Trump was giving HIS OPINION. Opinions vary.

When you're supposedly rallying a nation to fight an epidemic, you don't suggest in any way, shape, or form that the disease is a hoax.

Trump disregarded the early warnings from his staff, so he treated it like a hoax.

Even now, he spends his time tweeting nasty things about Democrats rather than doing his job.

  37. News Release --- The Democratic debate scheduled for Sunday will be moved from Arizona to Washington, D.C. with no live audience, the Democratic National Committee announced Thursday. - CNN

Not only will presidential hopefuls need to convince Americans they are best to handle a still-worsening pandemic, but they'll have to come up with ways to market those plans to voters. That's hard to do when candidates can't shake hands or hold big campaign rallies. - U.S. News & World Report

The coronavirus pandemic will likely add a level of solemnity to the debate, which may also minimize conflict between the two, strategists said. - Reuters

Comment --- The problem here is that the so-called strategies offered by the Democrat debaters can not be implemented by either one of them until after one of them is inaugurated … And hopefully, by then this national crisis for our sake would have ebbed … In the interim their service to the nation by suggestion or criticism would allow the current President to adopt the workable portions of their suggestions if he found them reasonable and also, if he had already started to work on these things prior to these suggestions.... On the local, state , national and international there are indeed issues that need immediate action and can not await solution until after the national election and the inauguration of a President whether new or current.

  38. I deleted some (probably not enough) of the personal attacks here. Here's a challenge. Try to assume everyone here wants what is best for the country and try responding with that in mind.

My take on this is that Trump's original reaction to Covid-19 is a disaster. He downplayed it, likened it to the flu and LIED about testing while attacking anyone who said otherwise. He damaged the nation's ability to respond when he eliminated an office designed to respond to pandemics. I will give him credit for his actions since Wednesday. Though his address to the nation was not received well and still contained some misinformation, it appeared to me that he finally got it and was taking the matter seriously. His Friday news conference was impressive, not for what he or Pence said, but bc of the response of the private sector. Trump is still too insistent on patting himself on the back, while Pence is shameful in his constant cheerleading for Trump.

The charlatan has been exposed for what he is, but I think we'll be alright now. Some of us will get sick. A few of us will die. All of us will suffer.

Besides I think everyone's exhausted from hearing over and over again, ":what about Obama.. What about.. what about..?" It comes up nearly every single time someone questions the Trump administration. Enough already.

Here's a flash. Trump is president. He has been for over 3 years now. Good or bad he owns whatever happens. Why not try and focus on that. Even if you believe mistakes were made in the past I don't see how that would justify mistakes made in the present.

According to FactCheck.org, on April 15, 2009, the first infection was identified in California, according to the CDC, and less than two weeks later, on April 26, 2009, the Obama administration declared a public health emergency. The day before, on April 25, the World Health Organization had declared a public health emergency.

The same day — April 26 — the CDC began releasing antiviral drugs to treat the H1N1 flu, and two days later, the FDA approved a new CDC test for the disease, according to a CDC timeline on the pandemic.

On April 30, 2009, two days after the public health emergency declaration, Obama formally asked Congress for $1.5 billion to fight the outbreak, and later asked for nearly $9 billion, according a September 2009 Congressional Research Service report. On June 26, 2009, Obama signed Congress’ supplemental appropriation bill that included $7.7 billion for the outbreak.

The U.S. public health emergency was renewed twice — on July 24, 2009, and Oct. 1, 2009.

The MAGA spin is not only "slightly" incorrect, it's total bullpoop. And, as you say, they seem to think that if they scream their false facts loud enough and long enough, most Americans will accept it as fact.

I hope they soon realize that our president has completely mishandled this event - from refusing to buy German-manufactured tests (unlike the rest of the world), to outright manipulation of White House media and Fox News (sic). The president has failed bigly, thus increasing the potential harm to millions of Americans.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Other nations including the Britt's don't seem to mention Trump as metric at all.

Only here is this seen though a political lens where fault must be assigned. I suspect that's because our media and politicians have pushed for 3 years various false and misleading narratives which now have been conveniently muted. Our media is not and has not been a credible source of truth or information for years, it's entertainment that it tailored for certain demographics...fake news.

Almost any foreign news service is a better source, I recommend everyone watch and see for yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Real or fake, it is in fact a "perfect test" for everything from emergency response to supply chain hardiness.

No President in my lifetime has had such a test run during their administration even if just by happenstance, and that is negligent. The for-profit healthcare system has moved supply chains off shore and left us vulnerable to exactly what this test exposed. That's what happens when capitalism has no social harness.

It took about 3 days for us to go from rugged individualism to one big family that's needs to care about each others health, some were ahead of the curve on this and preached it to a deaf congregation for years.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Fault is being assigned because the shortcomings are so outrageous, and by a president who already has let us down in dozens of different ways.

In the case of the epidemic, some people will pay for that incompetence with their life, while others of us--thankfully--only will be seriously inconvenienced.

Looks to me like you're the one who's trying to do the muting. Many of us are smart enough to be critical of what we see, hear, and read without being paralyzing in reaching conclusions.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Since there is so much debate on what the President said and when he said it, lets look at a timeline of what he tweeted. These are his actual words, from his twitter account, on the days he tweeted them.

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”

February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”

February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”

February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.”

February 25: “I think that's a problem that’s going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.”

February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

February 26: “We're going very substantially down, not up.”

February 27: “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”

February 28: “We're ordering a lot of supplies. We're ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn't be ordering unless it was something like this. But we're ordering a lot of different elements of medical.”

March 2: “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?”

March 2: “A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they’re happening very rapidly.”

March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”

March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”

March 5: “The United States… has, as of now, only 129 cases… and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!”

March 6: “I think we’re doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down… a tremendous job at keeping it down.”

March 6: “Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”

March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”

March 6: “I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault.”

March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on CoronaVirus.”

March 9: “This blindsided the world.”

March 9: "The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant.”

March 10: "It will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away."

I can't say that we've ever had such a similar situation. I am reading accounts of the disastrous potential of COVID-19 being brought to Trump's attention as soon as the news began to emerge from China but he pooh-poohed it. These accounts are consistent with what he has said since then. Who can doubt the irony of him shaking multiple hands at his declaration of national emergency press conference? Absolutely stunning.

So Trump's unprecedented neglect has brought us unprecedented disruption, which seems likely to get much worse before it gets better. We taxpayers pay for experts to alert our presidents to such things, and he didn't care.

I have read a bit of American political history, and I am unaware of any other president who was been informed of such a threat to the health of the country but then failed to act in a meaningful way. Wouldn't it be great if Trump's fans awakened to the stark reality?

  58. after reading all these anti-Trump posts, I'd like ask what a different President would have done better to speed things up. First, remember January was Impeachment Month to keep everyone busy. Trump did, however, stop all flights from China at the end of the month before the end of the month. AT that time, information on the nature of this virus was very limited, and we had no known cases on our nation.

Immediately after stopping the China flights, a response was planned and execution begun. A team of experts was assembled and relied upon for guidance.

Once begun, I believe the rate of action followed a normal timeline. In my view, the rate of action would not/could not have been more swift to bring us where we are now.

SERIOUSLY, the only flaw might be in his communication style. Big deal. Stuff WAS happening. Those steps, massive arrangements and various product manufacturing could not have been done more quickly by a different President, in my view.

If you DO believe the actual implementation could have been quicker than the 6 weeks it has taken so far . . .

What would your preferred guy, gal have done differently to speed things up?

Besides communicating in a more foreboding manner.

    ReplyDelete
  59. As said, I expect any president to listen to the experts and take the action that matches what they're saying. He thinks his "keep them out with a wall" approach is enough. He has the pubic officials holding their tongue to an extent to that they can stay on the job.

If people were sick and dying in numbers greater than normal the comments here would most likely be appeals for help.

With every bash Trump takes on this without the corresponding personal story of tragedy you can be more and more assured that "it will go away".

I get that most posers here don’t like Trump (especially not our Blog host). I get that the Lehigh Valley has many liberals. But that’s not what confuses me. I expect Trump to lose Allentown and Easton, just like he will Philadelphia for the same reasons.

Trump’s response to this crisis is being condemned PRIMARILY because people don’t like the guy. The way he communicates is just about the only thing different than how ANY other President would handle this.

Putting together a response, an action plan, takes a considerable amount of time, despite what we might like. Manufacturing things and other logistics can’t be speeded up.

Again I ask, what specific actions were held back unreasonably? Steps that would have put us at our current level of preparedness, back when the only cases were in a Washington State nursing home?

I say, all of this is moving along as quickly as it possibly can.

So much outrage is not warranted, Just petty politics.

"Obama’s acting director of health and human services declared H1N1 a public health emergency on April 26, 2009.

That was when only 20 cases of H1N1 — and no deaths — around the country had been confirmed."

  69. Now we have the Mayor of Hoboken, NJ issuing an order that no residents are permitted (with very few exceptions) to leave their homes between the hours of 10PM - 5PM daily.

I believe this is a huge overreaction that is reminiscent of Fascist governments around the world. Besides, it suggests the only time you can be infected is during those hours! This type of announcement will lead to even MORE hysteria. And, when people ignore being controlled this way, even more ugly physical confrontations.

  71. And upcoming, I think, is criticism of anyone Member of Congress who reluctance to approving Pelosi’s latest offering. Like the first plan she offered was filled with add-ons that have NOTHING to do with defeating the virus, this second Bill is also filled with junk that will cause problems, and use taxpayer funds carelessly.

All passed in the House at the last possible hours before the House planned vacation. Many who were given a copy and voted never took the time to even read it! No one had enough time to analyze the contents and ask questions.

To this extent, our Congress is failing us.

  73. From USA Today:

"U.S. travelers flying back from Europe late Saturday were greeted with snaking lines and hours-long waits at major airports as expanded coronavirus screenings required by the government's new European travel restrictions took effect."

Another bungle by the White House. These people certainly aren't avoiding crowds, are they?

  74. Also from USA Today:

"Cruise ship passengers under federal coronavirus quarantine say they are lacking food, medical attention and are being housed in unsanitary conditions, contradicting Trump's claims that getting them off the Grand Princess was a 'tremendous success.'"

Also a bungle, plus yet another lie, by the White House.

  77. 10:18 -

Start with Louie Gohmert’s reaction in Congress, then go from there for other comments about what’s in it. YES, Louie Gohmert is a Republican Congressman from Texas, same party as Senator McConnell. You don’t need to discount the concerns because of that.

I will also point out, Pelosi’s ORIGINAL offering included Permanent funding for abortions! This offering includes components that will destroy small business budgets.

  79. 10:18 - to read the entire proposal in pdf form, visit Conservative Tree House website. It’s all there. Oops! Another place to discredit (due to the title). Either way, that site lists full pdf’s of all significant government writings, exactly as written. But, untrustworthy in the minds of some.

I’d also like to clarify, the abortion piece listed in the first proposal WAS stricken.

  80. 10:50 - yes, both approved it. SUBJECT to the adjustments made by the Senate. Who knows, enough pork projects might be in there to satisfy specific Republican Senators to go along, or to get clear passage later for some local projects? I believe the entirety of Congress needs a good flushing out.

Actually it just links to Congress itself for H.R. 6201. Which you could have posted rather then steering people to a far right website.
As you pointed out the Hyde amendment was stricken. Which still doesn't answer the question I asked [10:18AM], "What are you objecting to specifically?"

As far as Louie Gohmert HERE IS HIS OFFICIAL STATEMENT after voting no on the measure. Basically his problem seems to believe it was rushed through too quickly. He seems to want the Senate to slow-track the bill and send it back to the house with amendments. Good or bad.. you be the judge.

Now that we know Louie's objections it still doesn't answer what the original poster objections were at 9:03 AM when they said, "this second Bill is also filled with junk". What junk would that be?

And where do you find documentation of a conditional approval by Mnuchin or Trump? And yes, we all already know that any bill must past both houses of Congress. But I understood they agreed on the HOUSE bill. Although 40 GOP House members voted against it, I find no reasoning that matches yours.

  84. From Time:

"The sticking point in the negotiations, according to Republican and Democratic aides, was the paid family leave provision. Republicans were concerned that the policy would overburden the Social Security Administration, rendering the policy ineffective, and overwhelm small business. The final bill includes tax credits for small businesses, and exemptions for business with fewer than 50 employees."

    ReplyDelete
  85. Also from Time:

"The legislation now heads to the Senate, which returns to Washington on Monday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had dismissed Democrats’ initial version of the bill released March 11th as an 'ideological wish list' said in a statement that while the chamber would need to review the bill, he believes 'the vast majority of Senators in both parties will agree we should act swiftly to secure relief for American workers, families, and small businesses.'”

It sounds like the House Democrats were willing to compromise, and certainly Pelosi was striking a cooperative tone when I heard her speak.

But Senate Republicans have proved they will block virtually anything that the House passes.
