Governor Wolf Shuts Down State, Except for "Life Sustaining" Businesses

On Monday, Governor Tom Wolf ostensibly ordered the closure of all but "essential" businesses in the state. But as I pointed out, it was no order at all. But it was enough to scare the hell out of everyone, who emptied stores in a panic-buying binge.

Wolf has taken things one step further. He has now issued an Executive Order under which all non-life sustaining bsuinesses must shut down by 8 pm today. Enforcement actions begin on Saturday.

What is and is not a life-sustaining business? You can see a list below. "Yes" means life-sustaining.

Wolf has now shut down construction made possible by a mild winter and the entire real estate industry. His order remains in effect until he lifts it.

If you are in a non life sustaining business, you can work from home "so long as social distancing and other mitigation measures are followed in such operations.”

“Life sustaining businesses may remain open, but they must follow, at a minimum, the social distancing practices and other mitigation measures defined by the Centers for Disease Control to protect workers and patrons.”

  1. Shutting down accountants and insurance agents?

    And dry-cleaners?

And what better time to fix the damn roads when there's no traffic.

All of those activities can be done while maintaining social distancing.

I'm not sure I see the logic.

Can I get a sidewalk repaired?

  4. Bernie,

If you need a place to stay, let me know. Because according to the last line of the fancy spreadsheet your house is prohibited from physical operations.

  5. Well, BUNCHES of hourlies took a hit tonight. Furloughs implemented within hours of this order.

Uncle Tom thinks DC's 1k check and UC is the ticket. God bless 'em.

We had already stopped recruitment and hiring in anticipation, who didn't see the mighty show of power coming? Our two PA branches were stellar performers, virtually all business done by phone and internet. Company provided for two thorough cleanings daily, ZERO problems, a still thriving company now with two of its seven branches shuttered because...

    Gubmint knows best.

We are, by no means, the only example. You'll see.

  6. If you search for "drugstore" or "pharmacy" on this list, it comes up with "0" results.

If you search for "drug," you only get wholesale drugs and druggist suppliers.

There is no category for "drugstore" or "pharmacy" under Retail/Trade.

    Nice. So nice. Not!

  7. BTW, why didn't the governor issue an executive order banning all crimes that require incarceration? I'm sure criminals would "step up" to help out!

  8. Somebody needs to challenge this in court....oh wait that's right...the courts are closed too.

  9. If Trump would have done this Bernie, you would have written a ten paragraph post deriding his illegal "authoritarian" action and how he was hurting the most vulnerable. Wolf does this...crickets! I am all for protecting lives but this is just a bridge too far. Its economic suicide.

  10. Any word on deferral on collection actions? At this point most of the PA workforce is at home.

  11. he closed payroll companies. How exactly are companies who use these places to process payroll and who are still operating because they are essential supposed to process payroll?

You are completely full of shit. I already blasted Wolf on Tuesday, and that was when his directive was only voluntary. I am sick of assholes who misrepresent what others say. Maybe you should sleep a little more and drink a little less.

  13. For this to apply to outside construction workers, golf courses and other activities is typical overreaction of the ignorant and uninformed. Governors are now in a pissing contest to see who can demand more authoritarian actions. They again fear making any decisions, and now they feel they don't want to be criticized for too little action.

I am sure they will want to arrest the poor excavator digging a hole. but leave the criminals to run free. they should open temporary facilities for criminal offenders, maybe tents, to keep them from escalating their crimes when they see there will be no consequences.

It show the inability to think, a real problem in today's society.

  14. Now everyone knows why there is a run on gun purchases by FIRST TIME BUYERS who are most likely liberals who a few weeks ago demanded more gun control! This is real. The gunshop in Northampton is practically sold out! The decision by the Governor is myopic and a cookbook response to what he is seeing in other places and not based on reality. Locking people up in their homes and then, yes then threatening to arrest those who do not comply, its a recipe for issues beyond the coronavirus. Hoping the Governor takes another look at what he has dubiously ordered and come up with other more workable/reasonable directives.

  16. The government's police power expand in time of emergency. Do not doubt that they are considerable under these circumstances. No judge is going to find orders like Wolf's to be unconstitutional.
