Dolemite is Dynomite!

Over this holiday season, I watched Netflix' Dolemite is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy.  It is perhaps one of the most cheerful, if irreverent, movies I've ever seen. What's more, it's based on the true life story of Rudy Ray Moore, who is considered the godfather of rap. As a sheltered white boy who grew up while Moore was making his mark as Dolemite, I had no idea who he was. I had no idea who he was until I saw this movie. But Eddie Murphy did. From reviews I've since read, Rudy Ray Moore was one of his inspirations. Murphy would even host Rudy Ray Moore parties.

Here's how Dolemite introduces himself.

Dolemite is my name
And fucking up motherfuckers is my game!
I was born in a barrel of butcher knives
Shot in the ass with two Colt .45's
I've been slapped by a bear and bit by an eel
I chew up railroad iron, and shit out steel!
I jumped in the ocean and swallowed a whale
Handcuff lightning and throw THUNDER's ass in jail

Yes, this is vulgar and crass. It's also funny. I'll watch 15 minutes of Messiah as my penance.

    1. If you want to put us in a moral and cultural toilet, then yes, I guess it is.

  4. To each his own.

I just wish aficionados of this genre would keep their windows rolled up and the decibel level below 90.

  6. It's "knew," not "new." I am a rare netflix watcher. Do not have a lot of time.

You own views are appreciated, especially if they differ from mine. But remember, commenting is a privilege, not a right. I will delete personal attacks or off-topic remarks at my discretion. Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. If you attack someone personally, I expect you to identify yourself. I will delete criticisms of my comment policy, vulgarities, cut-and-paste jobs from other sources and any suggestion of violence towards anyone. I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics.
