Down With the Patriarchy!

If you're like me, you have probably noticed an increased hostility in recent months against those considered the ruling elite - old white males. We are apparently the chief reason for all of the world's problems. It's certainly true that we are quite often intolerant and bigoted. I have to tell you, my bowel movements alone could destroy the planet. But the very persons who condemn the flaws of miserable bastards like myself are themselves guilty of the same flaws.

I first noticed this phenomenon locally when Ray O'Connell was appointed Allentown's Mayor. I was actually amused to watch mostly white people line up and smear O'Connell because he is white and a senior.

Erin Keller, a candidate who herself is white, was loudly applauded when she called Allentown's current government "boys in the hood. White guys are making money; everyone else is floundering."

The angry mob wanted a convicted felon who was ineligible as a result of several felony drug convictions. They liked him because he is black.

"Give us Barabbas!" they cried.

I saw the angry mob again a few weeks later, this time at a NextGen debate for congressional candidates. I had to pay to get in that one. NextGen is all about protecting the "fundamental rights of every American" who (1) could afford the $5 admission fee; and (2) agreed with them. They denied the "fundamental rights" of John Morganelli, actually shouting him down as his opponents smiled.

Since that night, I see slurs all the time on Facebook, other form of social media and here.

What's going on, as NY Times David Brooks aptly observes, is "an epidemic of bigotry. Bigotry involves creating a stereotype about a disfavored group and then applying that stereotype to an individual you’ve never met. It was bigotry against Jews that got Alfred Dreyfus convicted in 1894. It was bigotry against young black males that got the Central Park Five convicted in 1990. It was bigotry against preppy lacrosse players that led to the bogus Duke lacrosse scandal."

Many of those who opposed Kavanaugh's confirmation did so because they know how privileged white people behave. Others are equally abhorrent of "the Left."

This is bigotry.

Up until now, I've mostly ignored this unhealthy hatred. But that changed this weekend, when two elected officials - Bethlehem Dem party boss Becky Wamsley and NorCo Council person Tara Zrinski - joined the circus. I defended Becky when she was unfairly smeared during her campaign by LV4All (who agree with them) elitists.

In a rant with bullshit statistics citing no source, Wamsley asks, "How many men do you personally know who have been falsely accused [of rape or sexual assault]? Not a one? Me either[sic]. Second question; How many people do you know that've [sic] been struck by lightning? Not a one? Me either [sic]. Lastly, how many woman do you know who have been raped or sexually assaulted? Again, I'll wait. Math is hard for some people."

Tara Zrinski incredulously responds, "Down with the patriarchy!" Wamsley gives her an "Amen!"

Now what false accusations of rape have to do with patriarchy is a mystery to me, but there it is.

Break out the guillotines!

Wamsley apparently missed the false accusations lobbed just a few months ago against GOP Congressional candidate Marty Nothstein. Like Nothstein, I have also been falsely accused of drugging a woman and raping her. Those kinds of accusations can be devastating because they are logically impossible to disprove.

Wamsley and Zrinski are both engaged in the very sexism, intolerance and bigotry they rightly condemn when it comes from men.

Wamsley has also slurred white males in some kind of goofy argument against assault rifles. "ARs are for WAR COMBAT, not the average, angry, ex-wife beater, white male," she says.

Do you detect just a little hatred there?

After taking her to task for her own hypocrisy, Wamsley responded on Facebook with "Beware of Republicans in Democrat's [sic] clothing." She later explained she was referring to me, although she did not mention me by name.

I'll out myself.

As for Zrinski, she believes "white males can get away with anything, shrouded by privileged [sic] and protected by the entourage of patriarchy, the ultimate fraternity."

Well, maybe she can explain how the patriarchy allowed her, a female, to get away with perjury.

When she was in the middle of a custody dispute with her ex, she and her then boyfriend (I assume he was a white male) went on a mini-vacation to New England, and brought her two boys with her. She put them in a separate room so she could have some alone time with her beau. But she lied to the court, telling the judge that the rooms were really a suite with connecting doors.

When Judge Emil Giordano discovered her lie, he sanctioned her $2,750 for her "perjury." (See NorCo Docket 2007-9468, Court Order dated 12/16/08, Paragraph 14).

The patriarchy never prosecuted her criminally, as it could have.

The hatred and intolerance I see in my own party is just as bad as the bigotry I see from some Republicans.

It is time to drop these stereotypes about the other tribe or admit you're both pretty much two sides of the same coin.

New Democrats are astonished that when they phone bank Democrats, these old white males tell them they intend to vote Republican. They has abandoned blue collar workers and the working poor. It has become elitist and more intolerant than the tea party members it condemns. While taking their money, Democrats have all but abandoned shrinking unions. The Affordable Health Care Act drove many away because healthcare is much less affordable now. Our children are unable to go to college without incurring monumental debt. Most of those in office are as wealthy and as entitled as the Republicans they decry.

Put simply, the Democratic Party needs an enema.

  1. I'm not sure what Democratic Party you are paying attention to, O'Hare, but the one I'm part of is arguing for higher minimum wages, better access to healthcare, and much cheaper or free access to higher ed including 2-year programs and trade schools and has opposed the dismantling of unions as much as is possible with the courts and GOP controlled governments against you at every turn. And I am not sure how a party can simultaneously be elitist and rage against white men, who, by any measure, make up a disproportionately large proportion of the elite.

Listen, I agree that a general hostility towards white dudes (of which I am one), while totally understandable from a historical perspective, shouldn't be translated into attacks on individuals. But really it should be understood as a reason to give women and minorities access to more opportunities in education and the workplace (before some insecure doofus calls me out, I know that enrollment rates for women at universities is now greater than for men, but is still disproportionately low for most minority groups, especially at the best schools). Whether you choose to believe it or not, there are still barriers to a lot of people in a lot of fields based on perceived race and gender.

Maybe just slow down, take a few deep breaths, and try took look at some of these issues from a perspective that isn't so damn defensive. You're playing into exactly the kind of grievance-based politics Trump is using.

  2. Boy are you right on the mark on this one Bernie. I call BS on anon 12:55, sounds like a woman pretending to be an apologetic white guy. I am a white guy and a Democrat. The P{arty is moving away from me in some ways. The republicans have decided to attack and marginalize people. I thought the Democrats would benefit from this in the long run but I fear they are not. They are doing the same thing. Instead of fighting for labor laws and economic justice they are focusing on peripheral social issues.

I know a few Democratic politicians and they say the same things. They are alarmed at the down right anger and hatred being freely spread by some in the party. The old white guy slam is everywhere. You mention some here. As office holders Zirinski and Zanneli should be better than that but they love to blow the discrimination dog whistle. I have been told the new women on county council are very pointed in their mocking of older white men. They privately attack one currently on council as being to old for his position.

It is a sad thing and frankly it is shameful to do what they feel many have been done to them. One has claimed by nature of her gender she is more qualified for a leadership role than an old white man.

These types of things diminish us all. These are not good times in politics. Maybe this new way is not a better way.

  6. So the old white men are crying that they are only ones that have any say in how things run.
The younger generation has learned that those old white men do not care at all for anything the younger folks are interested in.
They are tired of being told their vote is important and then being ignored.
take education and it's high cost, seniors ignore that almost with glee,
killing by bad apple police? the old men ask what did that thug do to get shot.
even with video the old white men yawn and change the channel.
Healthcare? the old white men demand no changes and if kids or youth lose out so seniors can have their motorized chairs and penis pumps paid by medicare well too bad.
So the younger generation has none of it's causes even considered by the old white guys.
housing-that is beyond the reach of the young generation,jobs-the days of a living wage is rapidly eroding.
The old white men-hey as long as i get a good COLA on my Social Security i have no interest in their problems.
perhaps those old white men might realize that their grasp on power is being erased and they have got their panties in a bunch.
perhaps those angry old white men need a wake up call so that they can stop thinking the world revolves around them.
simply being old does not make anyone wise.

  11. Bernie, you're getting closer and waking up! This is going on everywhere. The idea that traditional, old-stock America will fade away peacefully and we will enter a new era of Americanism is bogus. What's going to happen is that pretty much every institution, symbol, and legacy that made up what you think of as "America" is going to get the torch eventually, or just be left to rot.

I'm trying my best to take what my grandparents built and pass it on to my sons and daughters. I really, truly worry about the state that this nation will be in in 20-30 years. When (I wish I could say if) the left gets back in power, it will get increasingly ugly.

You'll get called a bigot, and worse, but press on! This is not about medical care reform or taxes. It's much deeper than that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. "What have you done with the real Bernie O'Hare?"

I am very much a Democrat. But I am a Democrat who thinks the party should be a voice for the working poor and middle class, not smug elitists who think gay rights are more important than putting food on a family's table or who are intent on attacking either whites or older people. The new Democrats, many of whom have only become interested in politics recently, have changed the focus of the party that at one time championed the Everyman. These basics have lost their priority as activists have become more intent on wearing vagina hats and making us all look frivolous and silly.

  13. "You'll get called a bigot, and worse, but press on! This is not about medical care reform or taxes. It's much deeper than that."

How can I be called a bigot for objecting to the hypocrisy of the bigotry within my own party? I think we have lost our way. Also, isn't it time that people stop condemning entire groups, be they whites, blacks, old people, "the Left," Republicans or Democrats? I am so tired of the shrill preaching.

    ReplyDelete
  14. "So the old white men are crying that they are only ones that have any say in how things run."

There is a difference between wanting to empower women, which I support completely, and vilifying an entire segment of society. You need to wake up and drop exactly the same kind of rhetoric used by Trump. It's hypocritical.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bernie, @ 6:30, "Isn't it time we stop condemning entire groups..."

That is an entirely virtuous position, but it's also a politically untenable one right now. I used to think in a similar way, that people need to chill out and consider everyone as individuals. The problem is, that is a nuanced position and requires some thought to truly adhere to. Most people have neither the time nor inclination to get there, so when someone offers up other solutions that relate to demonizing an out-group, they easily fall into line there.

But there's a kernel of truth to that. Since people seem to coalesce this way, outgroup vs. outgroup, it is a self fulfilling prophecy of sorts. Humans are tribal, it's in our genes, and we cannot escape that, only work with it. Unless we re-unify under a real national identity again, we'll keep descending on this path. The real question is, what will the new nation look like? The old one came out of European traditions, Anglo-American common law, enlightenment philosophers, capitalist expansion (warts and all), etc. The new one, at least proposed by "the left" or whatever you want to call it, seems to be born from rage and jealousy.

P.S. I hate to say "the left" but I don't know how else to easily describe whatever it is we're seeing here.

  16. Yes, Patriarchy is now the new evil, the family structure where the husband is the head of the household, were a father is respected in the family, which in turn encourages a father to do his best for his family.

An intact family structure offers certain advantages to children, since this structure, while eroding, has been the predominate structure of white families it is now another symptom of white privilege. It needs to be destroyed so those who choose to desert their families and responsibilities will not be at a disadvantage.

Fathers have been being degraded by Hollywood for decades, always the fool, stupid, the mother, of course, is a saint. An intact family is the best course to emotional stability, prosperity and success, THAT IS A FACT. If fathers are not respected and encouraged, if they are regarded as just a pay check, the family most likely will not survive.

Of course that would produce more dependent mothers and children, the goal of a socialist state.

  17. Unfortunately we women lie, cheat, steal, kill, sexually abuse others and commit other sins. We are as easily corrupted by the seduction of power and politics. Different than men, nah, not so much. The "pink hats" we sport on our heads are as amoral as the penises we disparage. Perhaps we have not had the same opportunities to express our true nature. "You've come along way baby" but this woman is not feeling as smug as some of my sisters. The mills of the gods grind as slowly but finely for women as for men. We all need to "get our shit together" for our kids and our country.

And Bernie, you keep repeating that the Democrats no longer champion "the everyman," but you have yet to show it. Seems to be just an empty claim to justify your turn rightward. By the way, working towards gay rights is important because they are about putting food on people's tables. In many places gays can still be fired on the basis of their orientation. Social issues are not independent of economic issues.

Becky Wamsley herself has only recently become political. She may be all the things you say she is, but she is also a hypocrite. Without question, women have been victimized and held back. So have most people of color. But this bigotry is no justification for more bigotry. I am all for dialogue and empowering everyone on an equal footing, but we need to stop hurling the same kinds of insults that donald trump hurls. We need to stop appealing to people's dark sides and hatred of "the other."

Part of the reason for this is the media. We stereotype those on the left and those on the right so that they become caricatures of who they really are.

  69. Bernie don't you think the county would be better off with women or young men at the helm? Especially younger. Seriously, there are some people in county government that are old and have been around a long time. There is a time to step down and get out of the way. That is life.

  70. "A County Councilwoman, Tara Zrinski, was found to have committed perjury by a judge. She was sanctioned by the court. Lying in court is a felony. Is she resigning?"

She was never charged criminally by the patriarchy.

  81. You hate strong, intelligent and independent women, we all know that. Instead of attacking great female officeholders what about the old ones? Who are the old men in local government and how long have they been there? Why not identify them and tell us their ages.

  83. Bernie, which woman runs county council. Supposedly it is the Heffner woman. Is that true?

  84. Peg FERRARO used to run County Council as President

  85. No one runs county council. They are nine separate members. Ron Heckman is VP and will probably be elected President.

  87. I left a comment about how Wamsley and Zrinski were right and this blog post was proof that you are a fragile, old, angry white male who felt his voice was the only one that needed to be heard. And then you deleted my comment. That's irony.

Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. If you attack someone personally, I expect you to identify yourself. I will delete criticisms of my comment policy, vulgarities, cut-and-paste jobs from other sources and any suggestion of violence towards anyone. I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics.
