White Supremacist Haven Here in Pa

Yesterday, I told you anti-Semitism is creeping its ugly way into a supposed Easton Facebook group, along with a healthy dose of xenophobia blended with racism and misogyny. All in good fun, they say. But that's nothing compared to Ulysses, Pa., which has been tagged by the Inky as a "haven" for white supremacists. Ulysses is in Potter County, which voted 80% for Trump.

From the article:

“Personally, I don’t know about Trump,” [said local Nazi Daniel Burnside]. “You won’t necessarily see MAGA hats at an NSM meeting. We’re anti-Semitic. Something’s off about Trump with the Jews. That said, we’re strategically aligned. When Trump says something that aligns with us – close the borders, build the wall, look after your own – that’s good: We’ve been saying this for 25 years, but he has made it mainstream.”

“We’re still a white nation, and I respect that he supports that," Burnside added. “He’s also highlighted social problems. The kids who go to bed hungry, people who can’t pay their bills, the damage being done to society.”

  1. Bernie you hit on a very interesting thread. The far left and far right are both radically anti-semitic. Trump, though a complete idiot in so many ways, is not anti-semitic, but a large number of his supporters on the far right are. Same on the Democratic side, Chuck Schumer has been a big supporter of Israel, but the far left of his party is anti-semitic.

You captured the issue on the far right/white supremecy front - An interesting article on CNN a couple months ago talks about the challenges on the Democratic side:

In this discussion there are no clear lines between parties, anti-semiticism and Israel. The enemy of my enemy is my friend seems more to apply here.

  2. These NSM types are a bunch of jokers. Geroge Lincoln Rockwell wannabes that will go nowhere. The real bulk of the dissident right is in the Jared Taylor types, Identity Evropa, and a plethora of YouTube savvy young persoanlipers like James Allsup and Lauren Southern. They don't dress up as Nazis, and instead pride themselves in being traditional upstanding citizens. I feel like there are a lot more of them then people realize, you probably stand next to them in line at the grocery store. I know for a fact that Identity Evropa is active in Pa, including our area.

  4. I’ve been saying this. I’m a Black Muslim woman, and let me say you can feel hate when someone looks at you. There’s towns I drive through as I’m ubering and I can always just a town by how I’m treated at their Wawa.

  6. I came up to Nazareth about a month ago to Moravian Hall Square to see the Large Flowerheads play. I had to weave through the side streets looking to park. I saw a good amount of advertising in the form of flags and banners declaring their affiliations.

  7. Just to be clear, Banker, most of the left, even the far left, is not antisemitic. There are some elements of the far left that do slip into anti-semitism, but opposition to the current situation in Israel should not be confused with antisemitism. Whether you like it or not, Israel is not a liberal (small "L") democracy. It is merely the most democratic in the region. It explicitly favors one religion, Judaism, over others, and grants special treatment to Jews, including exemptions from compulsory military service for those who decide to study Jewish theology. At the same time, it refuses to provide adequate services to Palestine while refusing to meet the treaty conditions that would allow it to become its own state. There is nothing inherently antisemitic about opposing the politics of Israel, and in fact many liberal American Jews oppose the current Israeli government for the reasons I just mentioned.

  8. Remember it is not Obama who claimed he could shoot someone and get away with it. It was not Obama who urged his supporters to punch out a protestor. Stop the false equivalency. Trump is a thug who encourages crime and violence.

What point are you trying to make? That Nazareth is another Ulysses? That's a stretch.

  10. I don't know of this town Ulysses, just pointing out out it's all over and closer than you think. Those people in Nazareth are the "brave ones" or the ones "looking for confrontations". How many are quietly harboring these feelings? I don't know what I would do if a neighbor decided to display that sort of thing. You can't move because you probably won't be able to sell your house.
