Allentown Mayor: Bennett Says No.

Statement from Siobhan “Sam” Bennett: "There has been speculation on whether or not I would submit my name for the position of interim Allentown Mayor. After the 2017 mayoral primary, I “burned my red jacket” and said it would be the last time I would be a candidate for public office. Rather, I said I would focus on non-profit and civic ways to continue assisting our city. I am a woman of my word, and I am not putting my name forward. Instead, I am urging City Council to focus on the most important task at hand, which is to restore Allentown City Hall’s positive reputation among voters and the citizens of our nation.

"After Ed Pawlowski’s resignation I contacted City Council members to gain insight into the direction they planned in appointing the interim mayor. Although I am extremely grateful for the hard work of the council members in such a difficult time in our city’s history, I respectfully disagree with the direction they are taking of picking anyone from the list of former candidates to serve as interim mayor.

"There is nothing more important than restoring confidence in City Hall and providing strong executive leadership to all the departments to get the city back on track. I stand with others who support the selection of someone with no special interests, political history or intention of being mayor long term. Allentown needs someone in the coming months with proven administrative ability and impeccable reputation who can make sound decisions without worrying about political considerations; someone with a business or non-profit background who will work with and be accountable to City Council to clean up the mess in city hall.

"This approach will make possible a fair mayoral race in the next municipal election, and also will give the next duly-elected mayor the best possible chance for success. What Allentown needs now and in the coming months is stability and reputation management, not more political business as usual.

"Although I will not be a candidate nor hold public office again, I will continue to work in on-profit ways for the best interests of the city we love. As CEO of the Pennsylvania Music Preservation Society I am committed to the success of the inaugural Great Pennsylvania Music & Arts Celebration (PennMArt) this Memorial Day Weekend at the historic Allentown Fairgrounds. Our goal is to honor veterans and celebrate Allentown’s and our Commonwealth’s great historical past and exciting future.

"Together with the right interim leadership we can hand over to the new mayor we elect in 2019 a city in which we can all be proud."

  1. Who gives a rat's ass what her opinion is? Serial loser candidate still trying to be relevant.

  2. She "contacted City Council members to gain insight into the direction they planned in appointing the interim mayor". Yeah, right. She was probably begging to be considered and was rejected. So now she wants to tell City Council what to do from the outside. She is nothing but an egomaniac who can't stand not being the center of attention, but all she ever contributes is unnecessary drama. That's why she has NEVER won an elected office, and why she burned her signature red campaign coat. Had to make her "exit" from politics as dramatic as possible. That's also why she has appointed herself the CEO of another organization she started, so she could suck money (this time corporate dollars) out of unwitting marks. When someone called her Sam "The Scam" Bennett they were so right.

  3. She SOOO wants to be appointed, or should we say anointed, mayor! That would be a bad mistake. Hope City Council doesn't go that route.

  4. OH MY GOD!!!! Bernie, why do you indulge this nonsense. Sammy is the most narcissistic person in Allentown. Yes even more so than Fed ED. Why in the world would she think anyone would give a tinkers damn about her not running for Mayor. This is another in along line of her self-congratulatory missives that mean nothing.

She is so vain, she is telling the world that her begging city council for the job was just informational and she will continue to devote her life to helping others.HAHA!

I guess she can be a regular on the Tony Iannelli "look at me" show with Ron Angle.

  7. I am now a bystander in what is happening in Allentown ... Yes, I still own a home in Allentown ... And am still both a de jure and de facto leader of a neighborhood in Allentown ...However, my official residence has been transferred elsewhere after the November election ... My decision to do that occurred in May after the Primary in which this so-called suffering community leader as termed by Bill White again fell short ... Actually I like were I primarily reside now and my wife likes that I do...

  16. I'm very skeptical of her motives, however, the "scam" has showed some remarkable common sense in her statement. Politics are going to be the main catalyst in this selection process. To let the political hack McCarthy opine on this is ridiculous.
He is not the City Solicitor and why should we let him set the parameters for this interim appointment. He is a "Fed Ed" proposed appointment and should be sailing off with him to carry his bags. This council lacks the fortitude to make right decisions and Acting Mayor Roger MacLean has done nothing to support an appointment to the interim position.

The Scam's proposal is a sound philosophy to put forward, however, she cannot be the standard bearer to carry this message. New intense blood is needed, and any turn back to the good old boy political choice must be avoided!
