And starting next January, you will need a passport for even domestic air travel. Instead of agreeing to comply with the federal law, Pennsylvania lawmakers have sent a letter to President Trump,seeking yet another extension.
Updated 10:30 am. If the cost of a passport turns you off, you can get a passport card for $30 for domestic air travel.

If we aren't in compliance then why did I have to bring my birth certificate (original, with the raised seal) to the DMV when getting my CDL renewed? I thought that was required because of PA coming into compliance with Real-ID. When I asked the drones at DMV about Real-ID they said they had no idea what I was talking about and PA has "no problem."
A national identification card, mandated by that Orwellian agency, "Homeland Security". I dispose everything about such a concept and that agency reminds me of what we fought against in the cold war in terms of "State Security" agency in the old Soviet Union. Driver's licenses are not the perview of the federal government and the concept of a national identification card is in pure contempt of the Tenth Amendment.
Where was DHS to prevent the subsequent slaughter of innocents in Orlando and San Bernadino and other terrorist attacks we've had here since 9-11. This is one agency I would be more than happy to see eliminated as a complete waste of money and an affront to our principles as a free society.
I thought I read in the paper earlier this week that PA was granted a 6 month extension because the D Governor Wolf, and R General Assembly leadership, wrote a letter to the Feds that will change PA's law to comply. So the extension is to get it passed. If the legislation passes, then we'll be given another extension to get it implemented, which could take up to 2 years. In the article, even some that had issues with the federal mandate and voted for our non-compliance in the past, said they will now vote for the changes even though still opposed to the idea, so PA residents don't face the consequences of your post.
It's a clear violation of the 10th amendment. The state and only the state is the arbiter of their driver license requirements...not the federal government.

Just a note, I had to get a new passport (because mine expired) and I read that there were going to be all of these delays for various reasons. They tell you that it takes 4-6 weeks normally to get the passport. I went in to the Post Office on January 12 and received it on January 24.

Normally you would have had to wait but note the date. You received it on the 24th and Mr. Trump was sworn in on the 20th. This is an early example of government shaping up and getting it right.

My license is up for renewal yet it useless to perform my job duties. Will I have to pay AGAIN for a real again because Harrisburg failed to comply since 2005? Can I write this debacle off on my state tax returns?

Ken, If you need a copy of your birth certificate, believe me, take a half day and go to Scranton to get it. It took me several months to get it online. I got tired of waiting and went to Scranton,and they had it for me right away. The best part of going to Scranton is I was able to stop at Coney Island for Texas weiners.
If you do not have a recent copy of your birth certificate issued from PA with your parent(s) names on it you may also need to get one of those before you apply for the card or a normal passport. This caused problems when my family got our passport cards to travel to Canada and we had to pay the extra fee to get the cards done same day. The card is a cheap alternative and a good back up ID when you are required to show two forms of ID.
