Thiel Running For Allentown Mayor

Charles Thiel, a Republican-turned-Democrat who was elected last year as an Allentown School Director,  is really running for Mayor. He has been quietly approaching people, asking them for support, and has told them he will announce after the election.

Rev. David Jones, a Lehigh County Commissioner, and former Congressional candidate Sam Bennett have already announced. Embattled Mayor Edwin Pawlowski is also threatening to run.

  1. My vote is for anyone but Bennet. That even includes Fed ED. That is how bad she is.

  2. I was waiting for a paid for Pawlowski stooge would decide to run. More evidence that "Fed Ed" will try to run Allentown from his federal cell. So far, the pickings for mayor is awful slim and I'm not encouraged by the crew running for this job. Each of them has their own personal agenda; something the current one has. I truly hope the republicans can come up with a solid candidate; one who could possibly win in this democratic inner-city bastion.

  7. I believe calling Bennett boozy is a personal attack, shouldn't you identify yourself?

  8. It is a personal attack, but I will give some latitude to personal attacks aimed at a politician. I agree that the failure of the person to identify means the comment itself has little or no value.

  9. What have Thiel or Jones every done for our city besides hold elected offices or be members of fancy boards? At least Bennett gets down in the trenches with us and does real volunteer work.

  10. Bernie, I think you should step up to the plate and invite the candidates to a debate with you as the moderator. I am serious, Lets say in early march after deadline to announce. Have the questions submitted through your blog and edited by you. If the candidates cant stand in front of you and answer serious questions they will never be able to pass the Valley public.

  11. I like that idea! We could set it up in early January.

  12. Yes, you could very well moderate a candidates' forum!

  13. Would be interested to hear your thinking on the judicial retirement age referendum. I would have expected you to be a "no" vote for some reason. Just curious.

  14. Susan, I already voted absentee and published my ballot. I voted "Yes" to extend the mandatory retirement age. I understand the sentiment against doing so in that judges serve 10-year terms and are then retained. But as a distinguished attorney yourself, you know it takes time for a judge to feel comfortable in those robes. I think they tend to get wiser as they age. Also, people at age 70 are for the most part still very active. So now that I told you how I voted, you know to do the opposite.

You own views are appreciated, especially if they differ from mine. But remember, commenting is a privilege, not a right. I will delete personal attacks or off-topic remarks at my discretion. Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. If you attack someone personally, I expect you to identify yourself. I will delete criticisms of my comment policy, vulgarities, cut-and-paste jobs from other sources and any suggestion of violence towards anyone. I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics. My decisions on these matters are made on a case by case basis, and may be affected by my mood that day, my access to the blog at the time the comment was made or other information that isn’t readily apparent.
