Green Pond Marsh Back on Drawing Board

Traditions of America (TOA), the developer proposing an active senior community next to an Audubon-designated Important Bird Area known as Green Pond Marsh, has been silent since February, but that's about to change. According to Planning Director Nathan Hale's Jones' monthly report, TOA has asked to be added to the August 22 Planning Commission agenda "to present and seek possible action from the Board." This signals that TOA has a formal plan.

In January, Green Pond Golf Course lawyer Graham Simmons warned that, unless the TOA plan is approved, the entire golf course will be developed.

Updated 10:40 pm: In the original version of this story, I had the wrong date for the PC. I also referred to Nathan Jones as Nathan Hale.

  1. Isn't green pond actually across the street from the planned development? Isn't the pond on Moravian Academy property? The area across from the pond isn't always wet, the birds move over to the pond if the field is dry. Are they getting rid of the pond?

The answer to your first two questions: yes and yes.
The answer to your last question: no.

Only a few of the species "move to the pond" if the marsh is dry. The pond is not suitable habitat for most of the 180 or so species of birds that rely on the Marsh.

  6. 4:21 then why did they raise the road between green pond and the marsh and DRY the marsh up like they did?

  7. Misguided Twp officials are in over their heads and will surely make more untold decisions that make no sense and seem to a always fuck things up no matter the board, appointed or elected.

  8. The Planning Commission meets on the 22nd, not the 29th.

Because the Township officials do not understand the value of Green Pond Marsh. Below, you can read an answer to this question in an interview of SaveGreenPond.org conducted by the Northampton Community College newspaper (the full interview is here:
    www.SaveGreenPond.org/interview-with-savegreenponddotorg.php).

--The Commuter newspaper: “How did the Save Green Pond Group begin?”
--SaveGreenPond.org: “The SaveGreenPond.org website was created in the fall of 2011 shortly after the road between Green Pond and the Green Pond Marsh was resurfaced and raised about 8 inches by PennDOT. This raising of the road effectively created a dam on the east side of Green Pond. This not only made driving on the road more dangerous during heavy rain (and for many days thereafter), but it also prevented the Green Pond overflow water from replenishing Green Pond Marsh. This is when it became apparent that no one in Bethlehem Township with any authority was concerned about the unique ecological treasure that existed at Green Pond Marsh.”
“The SaveGreenPond.org website was not publicized in any manner until the current proposal by Green Pond Country Club to build in the marsh area was announced. Since then, we want everyone to realize what a unique natural gem will be lost if construction there is approved.”

  11. I did not delete anything. Sometimes comments go into my spam folder. Instead of making false accusations, contact me when this happens.

It wasn't consciously a false accusation. We are obviously internet illiterates; it certainly seemed like the posts were being deleted because they all appeared as Comments, only later to have disappeared (or so we thought -"deleted").

    Thanks for reposting.
