Embattled Pennsylvania AG Kathleen Kane announced today, the last possible day for filing nominating petitions, that she's finally decided against seeking re-election. That's too late to help Democrats. After a Senate removal vote recently "failed," Kane's trial on perjury and related charges will take place in August. And if that's not enough, the House will vote to impeach her, forcing another trial in the state senate. Along the way, every Democrat who refused to demand her to step down will be attacked, and rightly so.
With Kane out, the remaining Democrats in contention are Northampton County DA John Morganelli, Montgomery County Comm'r Josh Spairo and Allegheny County DA Stephen Zappala. Both Morganelli and Zappala are seasoned prosecutors, while Shapiro's strength is his ability to raise money.
Whoever climbs to the top of the Democratic Mountain will face State Senator Steve Rafferty, a former Deputy AG, in November.
Along the way, I'm sure Rafferty will be eminding voters what they got the last time they elected a Democrat.
Morganelli, who has called for a complete overhaul of the AG's office, nevertheless stated yesterday that "I always liked Ms. Kane and I wish for her the best as she faces the challenges with respect to her law license and the allegations against her."
In my opinion, this race is already over. Rafferty will be overwhelmingly elected. and Josh Shairo will have to figure out some other way to position himself to run for Governor.
The most qualified candidates - Morganelli and Zappala - will watch from the sidelines.

Good excuse for another Morganelli loss. However, he is using it to raise even ore money for God knows what.
..and why are we still paying Eakin his $203k a year salary? He is suspended with pay. Is he awaiting trial or are they trying to stretch this to retirement?
Am I reading this correctly? Mr. Morganelli is still refusing to call for Kane to step down?
Kathy expects to be nominated to SCOTUS. Pawlowski will take the PA AG slot, as one doesn't need to have a valid law license to serve.
9:23, You're not reading it correctly at all. All of the candidates running for that job did so knowing that they could be running to her. The only logical conclusion is that they all want her out of there.
Want her out now, or out next January?
As far as I am aware none of the Democrats running have called for Ms. Kane to leave office early. This is certainly something that one of the candidates can do to differentiate themselves from the field.
I wish Seth Williams would run. He'd have this R's vote.
Morganelli can't leave the County! Who will Donchez call to be told what to do concerning Bethlehem.
I also wish Seth Williams would run- he'd have this independents vote!
I'm surprised Donchez is allowing John to run- what the hell will he do w/o him? John's a nice guy, good DA- Donchez is a nice guy, but a very weak Mayor.
The notion that John Morganelli runs Bethlehem thru Donchez is very much wrong. I know that for a fact, but can't say how without revealing a confidence. Bob is very much his own man, and does what he thinks is in the best interests of Bethlehem, even when it is politically unpopular.I disagree with Bob about Martin Tower, but so what? He is a man of integrity. Most of the merchants who also opposed the Martin Tower ordinance would completely agree. People who suggest otherwise do not sign their name, so that pretty much tells ypu wha you need to know. Also, John is a very active prosecutor whose first and foremost job is prosecuting bad guys. He spends nights and weekends at the courthouse, annd amazingly still tries cases. He does not have time or inclination to be involved in city government.
