Dent: Hit Pause Button on Syrian Refugees

Congressman Charlie Dent, one of the few grown ups left in Washington, has issued a statement concerning the vicious terrorist attacks in Paris. He has suggested we hit the "pause" button on the acceptance of Syrian refugees until we are more certain that we are doing all we can to prevent a Jihad John from slipping through the cracks. He has also called on the President to establish a comprehensive strategy for dealing with ISIS. Although Obama has taken action, it is likely time for United States forces to expand rules of engagement that have been criticized by military experts.

Our hearts and our prayers are with the people of France, America’s oldest ally, following the recent terrorist attacks. These attacks provide a clear demonstration that the Administration’s response to the growing threat of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Middle East has been inadequate and ineffective.

Many will recall Vice President Biden’s statement in September of 2014 that we would “follow them [ISIS] to the gates of hell” and that we would “degrade and destroy” them.

Unfortunately, the actions of the Administration have not matched that rhetoric.

It is long past time that the President, in consultation with our national security leadership, develop a comprehensive political and military strategy and present it to Congress and the American people.

Now, in part due to President Obama’s failure to lead, we are faced with instability in the Middle East, an emboldened ISIS, and a humanitarian crisis of millions fleeing from the war zone in Iraq, Syria and other parts of the region.

Let me be clear: America is a caring nation. Our national heart is huge and the plight of the displaced, no matter their race, color or creed, moves us.

In fact, this past year, the United States provided $3 billion in refugee assistance, of which $2.5 billion went to global refugee programs that provide support for people displaced by violence abroad. We provided more than $615 million in economic support to our strong ally in the region, Jordan, to help them absorb the costs of the staggering number of refugees they have already accepted into their country.

However, the security of my constituents, and of all Americans, is one of my responsibilities as an elected Representative. Therefore, I support pausing the acceptance of Syrian refugees until a prompt review of the vetting process is completed by the appropriate federal agencies including the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the intelligence community.

Our current vetting process and security measures are comprehensive, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned in the Age of Terror - no system is foolproof nor is there one that cannot be improved by additional testing and review.

We’ve also learned that hindering our own counter-terrorism efforts in order to appease the ideological fringes of our society is counter-productive.

That is why I am reiterating my firm stand against closing the military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. Moving the detainees held at Guantanamo to the United States and holding them here would pose an unacceptable risk to the security of Americans with no benefit.

Additionally, we should maintain strong intelligence-gathering activities that have been proven effective in preventing terrorist attacks on America and our allies.

The terrorist attack in Paris proves definitively that ISIS is not “contained” or the “JV” team as President Obama has maintained. We must have a comprehensive strategy and decisive action to defeat them.”

In the fight against Nazism, we were more than willing to endure total war. That included rationing and all kinds of sacrifices. But that was the greatest generation. This is the Selfish Generation, unwilling to do anything except draw red lines. Until it's too late. So I can understand Obama's reluctance to do what he needs to do. But it should be obvious to him now that his strategy is simply inadequate.

  1. People seem to over look the fact that the US took out two ISIS leaders the day before this most recent attack. The majority Congress had no apatite for ground troops but now conservative tabloids are politicizing a complicated situation where the real offense, to this point was intelligence. Looking at some of the hatred political post recently, it is imaginable how someone could be come radicalized.

  2. No refugees as this is no valid vetting process. It is time to heal the world from this cancer that is ISIS. The globalists want a World War and this is what it is. The world powers vs ISIS

  3. To fight ISIS mercilessly in France will require bombing the Paris suburbs. The enemy is not at the gate. There is no gate. The enemy is among us. Obama described the 500 killed by ISIS in the last two weeks as "setbacks." He considers them acceptable collateral damage in his war of indifference.

  4. Time we reflect on Beiruit 1983...Reagan's Bengazhi where 241 American Military Servicemen
58 French Paratroopers 6 civilians were killed. The Regan administrstion was warned the barracks of our peace keeping troops was not secure and at risk. Islamic extemist attacked. The French launched retaliatory air strikes. The use created plans, debated and the Reagan administration response was to pull out of Lebanon. Fast forward 2015. There are many parallels.

I am not overlooking that we have engaged in precise military strikes aimed at command and control. But it failed to prevent what happened in France and to a Russian airliner. Military efforts on the ground have largely been unsuccessful, although Obama had claimed recently to have cut off a supply line. I believe the strategy in use is inadequate. Obama is unwilling to do what we need to do bc it will be politically unpopular. But we need boots on the ground and we need to stay there until the area is stabilized. We invaded a country we should not have invaded, creating a power vacuum. That's on Bush. Then, we got out too soon and before stabilizing the region. That's on Obama.

  10. This is common sense.

You don't import people from a war zone during a time of war.

I can't believe that there's even a need to debate it.

That's a perfect summary of Obama's lack of leadership, on this and so many other issues.

It would seem that the "Selfish Generation" has found their perfect President.

Sure you do. We opened out doors to Jewish refugees during WWII. There is no reason to slam the door on people fleeing persecution, but I would support a temporary pause to ensure that we are not letting in any Johnny Jihads.

  14. I'm a Charlie Dent hater. But he's a voice of reason on this issue. Our FBI director said last week that our screening process was poor. The French were certain they had a good one in place. They didn't. We should proudly accept refugees. But not until after we've had a chance to understand what went wrong in France. Charlie Dent is right... Ugh, that hurts to admit.

  15. Congress did not fully support a ground mission until a coalation could be built with middle eastern support, hence the word play on "training forces" vs "ground forces".

"You know, I don't believe, right now, we need American boots on the ground, and the reason is we have boots on the ground already with the Kurds. The Peshmerga are trained, effective fighters. They are close allies of us," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Sunday, Feb 8 on ABC's "This Week."

  16. Dent as usual provides a common sense measured response in a world where the default is reflexive pandering. In the case here for far too many Republicans panicked opportunism. But just as bad for many on the left we have a default to almost shocking naivete.

Everything of course is heightened and amplified as a Presidential cycle heats up in a 24/7 news and social media world...

Dent is always good at articulating complicated issues beyond talking points. Maybe other politicians just aren't good at that? So the default are these really awful bullet point statements? Maybe that's giving too much benefit of doubt. For that even if I don't always agree with him I will (likely) always vote for him.

  18. It's pretty obvious Cruz is wrong. Kurds have a very limited interest and are largely ineffective without massive US air power. It is time for us to fix what we broke.

  19. You underestimate the Kurds. And they've been a reliable US ally for 100 years. Trump and Hillary have suggested creating a safe zone in Syria. It seems like an idea worth pursuing. Once the "line in the sand" was crossed without US reprisal, 250,000 Syrians were killed. These are not "setbacks" or acceptable collateral damage. I agree that it's time to fix what we broke.

  20. You can count on Charlie to give you the GOP handout talking points. he is now more worried about a challenge form his right then any Democrats in his District. His statement was riddled with the same passive aggressive snarks on the President that are usually present. No real solutions other than close the doors. So far he is towing the Party line and will hopefully pacify the tea party whackos and save himself a primary battle.

The roots of ISIS was reported on by Fareed Zaheir on CNN special. It was fascinating. Its roots are far reaching. Its most immediate development was throwing the Iraqi army out on the street after the invasion and "victory". They had no were to go and had military training. ISIS had fertile ground. Our Iraq War has had the effect of a terrorist greenhouse.

  21. 72 % of the so called refugees are military aged men. that is not an obama stat, a dent stat a gop stat . that comes from the United Nations. how many Germans or Japanese people were allowed to immigrate to the USA during WW2.In fact the democrats/FDR jailed most Japanese during WW2.Why would that be????

the bottom line . when every single member of obamas security testifies in front of congress as recently as today and last week, telling the world there is no proper way to vet these people and it would be a security risk, that's all I need. I don't need an unelected judge, or any other politician , including obama lecturing the American people about being bigots bc they choose not to allow women and children in to the USA. Since when is racist to be safe as one can be?

When it comes to foreign policy, obama is not the "go to guy" . He has absolutely no creditability and neither does, Susan Rice , Samantha Power, Ben Rhodes Hillary clinton or John Kerry . History will demonstrate this president "hung" America and her people out to dry. Now he continues to play politics and turn the issue on the GOP bc the wont let a 3 year or a woman enter the country. What a crock of crap. This is his typical approach. Create a straw man. Create a bad guy to avoid any responsibility for a failed foreign policy.

"Make no mistake about why Obama wants millions of foreigners to remain in the United States. He told us exactly why in 2008: he aims to "fundamentally transform" America.

One way to transform America is to import populations with cultural and legal traditions foreign to American traditions. Central and South America has a cultural tradition of instability in government, of graft, corruption, and civil strife. People from those countries bring an expectation that the systems are rigged against them, because oftentimes they are.

Obama wants to transform America by transforming who Americans are. Obama is playing the long game".JCA

  26. "But they have no interest in rolling into Syria or portions of Iraq "?
Really BOH? You know this for a fact how ?

Funny , that is not what many have been witnessing on the ground or hearing in the jets, choppers, tanks or other vehicles, for many years.

In fact your statement is complete crap. Your sources?

They have been begging for support just like the Jordanians, and many other factions, yet no assistance? Funny how people/countries, literally sit there and watch ISIS convoys of 80-100 vehicles move across the desert while US jets fly above them and do nothing and that has been going on for almost 6 years.

We hear no American boots on the ground in Syria? That is complete bunk as well. American boots have been on the ground in Syria and engaged in battle for years. In fact the govt has been running weapons in to the area for close to 6 years through other countries and groups, which btw is a complete NO NO.

May I ask where you got / get your foreign intel from? The Kurds needed help a long time ago from the West and Turkey. Turkey sat around on their border and did nothing as did the west. That , Sir is a fact.

What Iraq's Kurdish Peshmerga really need is more ammunition and weapons. they also need coordination, air support, and logistical help -- all of which the United States can provide on very short notice. they have been attacking and counterattacking since day one and more important they have been doing this far faster than the U.S.-trained Iraqi army, and that Sir is another fact.

The Kurdish military remains the best ally against ISIS. These guys are highly motivated, quite well equipped for the region., It is far past the time to commence U.S. airstrikes in support of the Peshmerga, and to greatly intensify broad-based U.S. security cooperation.

MSNBC , Fox New, CNN, Huff Post, and the network news outlets, is not a good source when it comes to foreign intel.

  27. We MUST err on the side of caution here. Embedded in the horde of refugees from Syria have to be some Islamic extremists. They are likely "laying low" or hiding their true motives in order to come to the U.S. and start or join a terrorist cell. We must be able to take our time in order to screen those dangerous people out. Wherever these folks are now has got to be better than the cesspool that Syria has become. So let's not rush things because our tone-deaf president wants to make us feel guilty about the situation.

  41. I don't undestand the urgency to accept Syrian refugees, Obama is acting like we absolutely must do this now. What's to be gained by accepting the refugees? There are many reasons to stop and think this through, once again Obama plows forward with his rigid ideology with no consideration of the views of the American public.

    ReplyDelete
  42. And to think its the fruitcake liberals who have been saying for several years now that Conservatives are more of a threat to the United States than terrorists.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Obama is like a really bad side-show magician at a carnival. His push for Syrian refugees is meant to be a distraction from his failed policy (if he even has one) against terrorism in general and ISIS in particular.

First Obama said ISIS was the JV team. Even if he wasn’t wrong about that (he was), it’s obvious that they are now the varsity squad, and it happened under his watch.

Then Obama said ISIS was contained, but later that same day the world very clearly found out that ISIS wasn’t contained.

His policies have destabilized other Middle Eastern countries, like Egypt and Libya, allowing ISIS to grow and thrive.

It was his insistence on regime change in Syria that created the instability in that country, leading to the refugee crisis that he now supposedly wants to help.

Even if reliable records and databases existed (and they don’t) in Syria to vet the Syrian refugees, Obama’s attempt to oust Assad in Syria has burned any bridge of cooperation that may have been available on that front.

In short, Obama’s been a foreign policy disaster, particularly in the Middle East, and wrong on just about every decision he’s made there.

Ordinarily, I’d be amused watching the rubes get suckered in by Obama’s deception. But this is about the security of our country, and even Obama’s own advisors have testified that there is no way to properly vet the Syrian refugees.

That’s all the more I need to hear. So let’s support those calling for a stoppage of the refugees and get back to focusing on what Obama is doing to eliminate ISIS. That’s what he doesn’t want to talk about.

    ReplyDelete
  44. after reading through this blog, I stumbled upon this story. we have a guy who claims the kurds are our allies. that is true. then we have another guy(4:49) claiming the kurds want nothing to do with Syria and Iraq. that is false.

the kurds want to fight. the reason the kurds can not is due to the fact that the entire obama foreign policy is being run by the Iranians, not obama. he is taking his marching orders from the Iranians. for anyone to try to make sense of this is a complete farce.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It is truly remarkable how many of the people here think they know anything about foreign policy and are adequate judges of its quality. ISIS (and Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, the Taliban, etc.) is not an enemy in the same mold as the Axis forces of WWII, and foreign policy in the contemporary Middle East demands a drastically different approach. Germany and Japan both had formal territorial boundaries and strong state structures, so when they surrendered to the Allies, the new governments that were formed did not have to start from scratch. If ISIS is approached with a massive display of force, and is defeated 100% militarily, as many seem to be recommending, there is no effective government that can take its place, and new terrorist organizations are likely to take root in the rubble just as ISIS did in Iraq. Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan are some of the weakest states on the planet, and solving the problems there requires a political, as well as military solution, which no GOP lawmakers seem to be offering. Simply yelling "Obama is weak" is not only an inadequately descriptive criticism of his policies, which are in many respects worthy of criticism, it also fails to propose a worthwhile solution to the problem, in which functioning, stable states are formed.

I would further advise you all to keep in mind that the Syrian refugees are refugees at all because they are fleeing ISIS and the Assad regime to protect themselves and their families, as I am certain most of you would do in a similar situation, and that the system the US has for vetting refugees is the most thorough vetting of any legal immigrant group. So when Charlie Dent says that he wants to let in refugees, but our current system is imperfect and we have to wait for a better one, all he is really saying is that he doesn't want to let in refugees, which is an embarrassingly callous stance for our Congressman to take in response to people fleeing for their lives.

    ReplyDelete
  46. If every single member of the national security team appeared in front of Congress and said this is a bad idea bc there is no way to vet people who are not in the system. The exact line used, if they have never been a ripple in the pond, they are not in the data base.

please tell me why obama, his party , our Governor and our one senator, refuse to take the advise given by the military, the national security team chosen by obama and his admin, in regards to this idea of suspending this plan until more vetting can be done?

why have the muslim nations not stepped up to help their own people? where are the Saudis, the Jordanians , and every single other muslim nation.

it is a fact, as reported by former members of the obama cabinet , including panetta and gates , that obama did not read the daily intel report. obama did not participate in the daily intel briefings and so , yet he is threatening a veto on suspending the refugee program for a time , until a system can be in place?

he is petulant and child like when questioned as to what his plans are. he has one job and that is to do everything with in his authority to protect the people. instead he attacks those who question his motives , his plans and his threat to veto any and all bills.

this should not be a partisan issue, but obama is clearly making it one. Casey is a is literally repeating the talking points word for word as is wolf. how many national security briefings does Casey and wolf participate in?

to hell with protecting the people. it is all about the party. how sad.

we will get hit. it is far past the point of if.it is a matter of when.

if the so called experts are telling the country , her leaders and others , that the idea of allowing people in with out a vetting process is bad, who are Casey obama and wolf vowing to do the complete opposite?

instead of being loyal to the democrat/socialist party , how about being loyal to America and her people.is that so hard to do ?

  49. Bernie, you seem to have missed my point. I am not saying I have a silver bullet, on the contrary, there isn't one. Foreign policy as it relates to the Middle East has always been a disaster (and not just American foreign policy, look at the UK and Russia as well), largely because the people devising it keep trying to treat Middle Eastern political entities as though they are European political entities.

But people who are in favor of refusing entry to refugees in order to "protect people" seem to forget that the refugees are not only people, but the people who are most in need of protection. Although usually I find your thoughts on local politics to be fairly sensible, you and most of the other people commenting here seem to not be thinking very clearly on this issue. Our intelligence agencies have enormous troves of data against which the identities of immigrants can be checked, and everyone should know that if we wait around for a better vetting system, we will be waiting forever, because a better system is not going to magically appear out of the ether. Stop letting Charlie Dent dupe you.

  56. 7:41, it looks like you didn't finish reading the end of that article, where, despite being Christians and Assad supporters many in LV's Syrian refugee community are doing all they can to welcome Muslim Syrian refugees. You and 6:29 can keep thinking I am an Obama puppet, even though you don't know me, but I am very critical of his foreign policy. Most notably the failures to promote an alternative to Assad early on in the Syrian uprising, and to build up the governing and military capacity of the Iraqi state. I support letting the refugees in because I believe it is our moral obligation to do so, especially because, as some in these comments have noted, the failure of US policy in the Middle East allowed ISIS to take root. And you still have not articulated what to do with the Syrian refugees if we don't let them in. Do we send them back to Syria, making them resentful of the west? Do we coerce European states into accepting refugees, making the leaders of those states resentful of us, and straining longstanding diplomatic relationships?

  57. Oh my , more Syrians caught at the border.

But according to obama is not American to stop these people from entering the country. love how a guy with no morals values and ethics, lectures the country on what is American in regards to values. isn't he the same guy who wants to fundamentally transform America? his idea of American values are far different than most Americans.

Go figure , obama, Casey , wolf ,the democrat/socialist party wrong again , in regards to national security.

The bad guys, are using both woman and children, more and more to carry out their dirty work. according to the un as of Friday, over 70% of the people on the run are military aged men, not women and children. nice job cowards standing and fighting for your country and your people.

they are here. they will continue to come due to the lack of border security but those who want the program halted like every single national security expert in the obama admin are racists.

btw , did obama read the 911 report about border security and how the bad guys will use the lack of security and lack of enforcement to their advantage.did he read the part where it is stated numerous times that "they" have declared war on the United States.

Love the fact that the guy making the security decisions refuses to sit in on the daily briefing and or even read the briefing. This was reported by Panetta and Gates, both secretaries of defense appointed by obama.

It is quite obvious, You can’t negotiate with progressivism. You can’t reason with it. You can’t compromise with it. You have to destroy it, utterly root and branch. Just ask the French and every other country in Europe.

Whether you label them “progressivism,” “socialism,” “communism” or “fascism,” it’s all just the same collectivist tyranny, varying only by degrees of bloodshed and fashion choices. Differentiating them is like choosing between herpes strains –it’s just a matter of the size of the chancres.

  58. Because you only linked to one source here that addresses a small portion of your argument, and I don't trust most of the sources that you (I assume) linked to above as far as I can throw them, I'll only address your final paragraph. The four labels of political ideologies that you list are wildly different in scale and precision, and it is important that people are able to distinguish between them. Socialism is a very broad category of political beliefs that generally include nationalization of certain industries that could be held privately and taxation schemes in which higher proportions of wealthy people's income is taxed than poor people's. The Interstate Highway System is a socialist program, as are public school and the progressive income tax scheme we have had for about a century (note that the word "progressive" in "progressive income tax" doesn't refer to the political ideology, but rather to tax rates that progressively increase with income level). In a very loose sense of the word, the military could also be described as a socialist alternative to private security forces. Communism is a very extreme subcategory of socialism in which all property is publicly owned, and resources are evenly distributed among the citizens. Communism differs from fascism in that fascist states are intensely nationalistic and militant, whereas an ultimate goal of communism is to dispose of nation-states altogether. Essentially, communist governments are attempts to use an all-encompassing government to serve the people, and fascist states use the people to serve an all-encompassing government. Progressivism is a bit different than the other three in that it isn't ideologically cohesive and it necessarily changes based on what the prevailing political climate is. For instance, supporting public school systems, desegregation, and opposing corporate monopolies were all once considered progressive, but are now the status quo. Of these four ideologies, "collectivism" only necessarily applies to communism and fascism. It can apply to certain other strains of socialist and progressive thought and can often be applied to non-state organizations (like co-ops) and social customs that imply membership in a larger body.

  59. The Boston bombers were “coddled” and given “free stuff” as refugees, but still “decided to attack us.” Looks like the exploited our own laws and our own programs.

The Boston Bombers , Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev moved to the United States through the refugee program, the family NEVER applied for refugee status to gain entry into the country. INSTEAD, their family arrived on a six-month visa and applied for political asylum once they were in the United States.

Nice job exploiting the program dirt bags. But we have nothing to worry about , just ask obama, hillary, wolf and fed ed.

slow it down and review the process.

  60. 11:08 PM , still doubt the links my friend? looks like the links/stories made national news today . I just tried to get you the info before it went national.

You don't trust the links , even though they are from reputable sources and the stories were all over the news the same day ? makes a lot of sense. NOT

YOUR QUOTE>>> "Because you only linked to one source here that addresses a small portion of your argument, and I don't trust most of the sources that you (I assume) linked to above as far as I can throw them".

SO YOU DONT TRUST SOME OF MY SOURCES, YET THE NATIONAL MEDIA USED THE EXACT SAME SOURCES?
YOU DONT TRUST MY SOURCES, YET EVERY SINGLE CABLE NEWS NETWORK USED THEM AS WELL.
BUT I GUESS YOU KNOW BETTERE THAN MOST. WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE SOURCES ? MAYBE THEY DIDN'T FIT YOUR AGENDA. PLEASE IDENTIFY WHAT IS NOT TO BE TRUSTED ABOUT A SOURCE THAT WAS USED BY EVERY SINGLE NEWS OUTLET, 3 DAYS LATE OF COURSE.

PLEASE CITE ANY EXAMPLE WHY MY SOURCES WERE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE TRUST WORTHY?

MAYBE YOUR SOURCES ARE THE ONES WHO CAN NOT BE TRUSTED BASED ON THE HISTORY OF YOUR SOURCES.

FUNNY HOW PEOPLE, LIKE YOURSELF, REFUSE TO USE THE ALTERNATIVE MEDIA LIKE BLOGGERS OR OTHER SOUCES FOR REAL NEWS. ASK JOHN EDWARDS OR BILL CLINTON ABOUT THE ALTERNATIVE MEDIA. VERIFIED NEWS COMES FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES , WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.

DONT DOUBT ME SIR. I WILL NEVER POST BOGUS INFO. I PROMISE

I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics.
