Wanna' Make Some Money on Election Day?

Northampton County's election office is looking for a few good men (and women) on election day. It needs to man the polls for the primary election on May 19. It's a long, 14-hour day, but it's also rewarding to watch democracy in action and be a part of it.

The pay is $175, in cash.

I've participated as a poll worker in two elections so far, and am very impressed by the dedication of mny fellow poll workers. They try very hard to get it right.

If you'd like more information, contact the Northampton County Elections Office at 610-559-3055.

This comment comes from either Mezzacappa or her blog mentor, both of whom are required to refrain from this sort of thing, but neither of whom has the ability to follow simple court orders.

Why is the pay "in cash?" Nothampton County doesn't have a checking account?

The pay is in cash bc NorCo gives checks to the election judges, who then go the bank and cashes them and prepares envelopes with $175 for each poll worker. Because it is under the required amount for a 1099, NorCo can do this. The poll workers like seeing the cash.

Strange that they still pay poll workers in cash. The county stopped paying the polling places in cash a few years ago because not every polling place was getting paid by the election judge.

What county? I have done two elections in Northampton County. In the first, I was a poll worker and was paid in cash by the elections judge. In the second, I was the elections judge and gave every poll worker an envelope with $175 in cash. I have heard of no instances in which a poll worker complained that he or she had been short-changed. If so, the elections judge could and should be charged criminally. I believe you are just making up stories. I would have no problem with seeing the County pay. But i think the poll workers like getting paid right away, and in the most fungible way possible. If they had to wait 30-60 days for a check, they might not be so willing.

Bernie, pay attention. I said polling places are no longer paid in cash by the election judge because some were not receiving it.

Elections judges have nothing to do with paying the polling places.

Polling places receive their payment by check. It arrives a day or so before the election.

Bernie @10:44,
Up until about 3 years ago, the election judges paid the polling places in cash.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Understood. That may be the case.

That's a lot more than my momma made working the polls back in the day (25-30 years ago), but it still only works out to be $12.50 an hour... Still, that's not too bad if you have nothing better to do and need a lil play dough.

Bernie, do you vote by absentee ballot, or are you afforded a lunch break to vote on E-Day?

Matt, because i am en elections judge, i do not feel comfortable leaving to vote at my poll. I vote by absentee ballot. My poll workers live close by, and they have the time to vote where they live.
