St. Karen Dolan

Recent stories and letters in The Morning Call have portrayed Karen Dolan, who has left Bethlehem in disgrace, as a saint. But Angelo Fetter, President of Monocacy Field and Stream, tells a different tale.

Every year since 1933, his nonprofit sponsors fishing tournaments for children. At one time, when they had more money, they would have fishing events for the blind and disabled as well. It was during the 2012 tournament that he drew the ire of Karen Dolan. "This lady made life hell for us," he claims.

In 2012, the tournament was right next to the Falls, and was offering free hot dogs and hamburgers to the kids and everyone else. But unfortunately for him, it was on a day when Dolan was hosting one of her artsy-fartsy wine-tasting events at the Mill, including a Take-a -Taco truck there to sell its fare.

People weren't buying her food because they were getting free hot dogs and hamburgers, and she went ballistic.

She cut power to the hot plates and grills. "You're not paying the electricity bill here. I am," she told him, although it would later be learned that Bethlehem was actually paying that bill.

The following year, when Fetter scheduled the tournament, he had to get 11 permits. "Never in the 14 years I was doing this was i required to get a permit before," Fetter noted.

When Fetter approached her to protest, she put her hand up in the air and said she had no time for him.

  2. as a kid growing up, i was a beneficiary of the annual Monocacy fishing contest and fished it every year with my friends and family.

Not only did that club make sure the creek was loaded with fish for the kids, they made an "event" out of it for us with free food, humungous trophies (to a 8 year old at least)and a general good time.

As an adult now, i can appreciate the work and the cost those members contributed to the community so the kids could have a great time fishing and it is a shame that one person can derail something like that.

  7. Bernie, give it up. You won already. What is your problem? It went from h isn't a just cause of unseating an unethical to person to petty squabble. You really do have something against this woman.

  8. Bernie is just pointing out that Dolan was not the saint or martyr some people are trying to portray her as. Her good intentions were fueled by a very large ego and that hubris brought her down.

  9. Bernie, thanks for any help you provided in getting this pompous bi*ch off of council. I'm sure there are many tales such as this one about how her arrogance radiated through the community.

Had there been no articles nominating her for Sainthood, I would have let this go. Had the Express Times bothered to contact this gentleman after being made aware of his story, i would have let it go. Had The Morning Call not told him to submit a letter to the editor and instead covered it, I would have let it go.

But both dailies are as responsible for this mess as Dolan herself. They enabled her, and apparently continue to do so. it is not their job to protect elected officials. It is their job to tell the truth.

  12. Monocacy is a red herring. Most of it is considered Class A wild Trout water. What that means is it has some of the highest water quality protections in the state, and rightfully so.

Without being an expert on this particular tournament, my understanding is they would dump piles of fish in the creek for the purposes of the tournament, which afterwards would create a mad rush to that section by anglers determined to catch these hatchery trophies.

It is possible that some of the permits were due to the dumping of trash stocked trout in a high quality stream, the fish commission is generally not a big fan of these types of tournaments in their better trout streams.

  13. I see. So Karen was defending the native brook trout.

  14. 12:59 is full of shit as if this was the case, the pa game commission would not stock the park stretch of the creek for opening day, throughout the spring.

  15. Indeed....@12:59 is full of shit.
How stupid do you think people are?

  16. Does membership in the poison posse automatically enroll you in the gang of jerks? Are there self help groups for serial sadists who use the bully pulpit of a blog to tarnish and marginalize strong females in the community?

Maybe it's time to get back in the gym O'Hare you were doing so much better when fitness was a priority in your life.

  17. Bernie is at it again. First the Easton woman and now Karen Dolan. He is the self-appointed sheriff of attacking bad women. Everyone who isn't part of his little sick gang knows it. A running joke at the courthouse and around the area. I guess if they were boys playing on sports teams, they could be bad.

    What a mess.

  20. I dont know karen, nor have never met her. But, I've come across many other pillars of or society who act like this. They never dare in front of people with equal or better footing, but if s/he believes she can get away with it and can justify their behavior as acting for the greater good, they always do.

  21. 7:36,

Mentioning Mezzacappa's and Dolan's sex is blatantly sexist and gender normative. It's 2014. When will chauvinist pigs like you go away?

  22. Look it up, nothing to do with brook trout. In fact i think there are very few if any there. Class A can have naturally reproducing species of either trout in a large enough number to make the grade.

I say the monocacy is a red herring because it is one of the few streams that has class A portions, then gets stocked in its town sections.

The FISH (not game) commission, has recommended changing this, as it is inconsistent with their practices throughout the state.

Further, there are plenty of studies that indicate stocking trout over wild populations causes more harm than good.

This one's already a done deal.

After months of debate, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commissioners approved a change to their Class A wild trout stream policy.

Class As are the best of the best among wild trout fisheries. Typically, they are never stocked.

There are 10 stream sections across the state that are home to Class A populations and among the most heavily used stocked trout streams in the state, however. Agency staff has been wrestling with how to handle that. Lawmakers and anglers have argued for stocking to continue; biologists have been seeking to have the streams classified as Class A to give them additional protection.

“It's a very politically charged situation,” said Leroy Young, director of the commission's bureau of fisheries.

The board arrived at a compromise at its most recent meeting. It agreed to allow the stocking of Class A streams only with the approval of the board. The 10 stream sections in question likely will be voted on that way as early as January.

The streams are Fishing Creek in Clinton County; two sections of Little Lehigh Creek in Lehigh County, Martins Creek and two sections of Monocacy Creek in Northamption County, Penns Creek in Centre County, two sections of Yellow Creek in Bedford County, and Pohopoco Creek in Carbon County.

  25. No need to bow! the comments were directed at the other anon's who labeled me as being "full of shit"

I am only half full of shit.

The other half is sugar and candy.

And I'll note, I'm not sure who was responsible for requiring the permits, it wasn't clear, I was simply stating, requiring permits to stock trout in any commonwealth water is not something that is unheard of.

  26. What a slanderous remark about the Fetters. Sr and Jr do so much for this organization and the fishing contest. This person must have been thrown out of the organization for some type of discrepancy. To slander a injured war veteran and one of lehigh valleys top wrestling officials. Shame on you. Thats unacceptable to the intelligence of us average tax payers. The coning is being done by you.
