Who Is Amanda Catherine Hein?

Princess in 2009, alleged murderer in 2013
Amanda Catherine Hein, who has been charged in the grisly bathroom stall slaying of her own newly born son, is certainly viewed as an evil monster. But is she? Originally from Coopersburg, she's a graduate from Southern Lehigh and attended Marymount Manhattan College and then LCCC.  She never finished her studies.

Somewhere along the way, she began abusing drugs. She worked at a local hospital, but was fired when she was caught stealing drugs. Her must recent job was with a dog shampooing business.

She developed an addiction to heroin, but reportedly kicked it a year ago.She was a habitual marijuana smoker, and suffered from depression.

She has already two abortions before resorting to infanticide.

On her Facebook page, back in 2009, she penned an apology poem called "Sandwich."

Sandwich

I heard your heart breaking
from the next room.
before I spoke, even,
your tears hung humid
in the apartment's atmosphere.
The apologies stuck
like peanut butter to my tongue
and all the spitting could not
unstick them.
So I spread "I'm sorry"
on toast, with blackberry jam.
And served my penance
with your lunch.

Unfortunately, she'll never be able to deliver an apology sandwich to her son.

  1. What she did was wrong and a criminal act. In a way I feel sorry for this young woman. Somewhere along the way, something just went wrong. No excuses but it is sad to see new life and young life, two lives destroyed. This is a case were society loses all the way around.

Please don't compare my sympathy for this young woman as condining her actions or meaning someone like Jim Gregory deserves sympathy, he does not.

One is an obvioulsy troubled 26 year old woman and the other is a self-absorbed 61 year old.

  2. I got my information from a man who has known her a long time. He was with her two months ago and did not know she was pregnant. He doesn't know what was going through her head. It's very sad, especially for her son.

  3. I am so upset by this. It is unfortunate that a young girl ended up pregnant and felt she could not share it with anyone. If she was doing drugs, most likely this child would have have development issues as well (no that did not give her the right to kill him). The only thing probably going through her head was most likely getting her next fix. If she was smoking pot I am sure she was doing heroine as well. That is not a drug you give up easily. I thank God she is locked up now because on the streets she would just keep on using. At least till her trial she will be kept clean from drugs. I don't want to see her get the death penalty, I would like to see her get the help she needs and become a productive member of society and go out and teach other young people what happens when you think drugs are your only friend. Let us not judge her till we walk that mile in her shoes.

  5. The moralizing is really a bit much. In a world where Democrats went to mat over 24 vs. 20 weeks (only the US, Canada, N. Korea and China are in this league), this was essentially her third abortion. If she'd terminated a few days or hours earlier, the ACLU would be fighting for her right to choose.

  6. No 732 not days or hours-weeks! This child was was 33 to 36 weeks gestation, no where near the 20 to 24 weeks range! This is a tragic story and a completely inappropriate time to play politics!

  7. I don't know Bernie but I get the feeling your blog is going off the rails a bit recently. You're giving an awful lot of attention to creepy people with legal problems and now you're profiling an accused murderer. It only provides sensationalist attention to people who neither need it nor deserve it.

What happened to the days of covering local politics and politicians?

  8. If you don't think that this woman's story or her lifestyle is important, don't read it. I don't ordinarily cover crime stories. I was assigned to cover this story, and I did. And frankly, I do see a connection between her life and some political issues. I do not want to discuss the issue right now bc I find it distasteful, but i will be discussing it at some point.

  9. Maybe if we all took the focus off politics and politicians and worked on our own families this shit wouldn't happen. That goes for both sides. Can see it coming with a soap opera trial and the fixated public with a polarizing verdict. Whats the mix this time, An unprvilidged abused childhood, bullied as a teen, couldnt look in mirror, and the endless searching for real love as an adult. Same ole excuses out of trial lawyers handbook 101. Its just not sad anymore just downright disgusting. Weary from the martin apel, newell, killer nurse and the countless other wierdos here and across country. Its no wonder the Aussies are calling for a travel ban to our country.

  11. Love how Guy and pothers plead to not get political and then proceed to make it all about political philosophy. As though this woman first checked with the Supreme Democratic Council of the World before committing this act.

Want to be taken seriously? Start conversing and acting like a real adult.

  12. Democrats used abortion politics quite often and effectively in the last election. The original reports were about a crudely disposed "fetus." The outrage didn't start until it was known to be a "baby." Abortion is not settled law or politics. Democrats spent a lot of money telling us that in the last election. The baby in question was smaller than one of the fetuses that NARAL darling Kermit Gosnell joked was "big enough to drive me home." Abortion is infanticide to many. There's little difference between the woman here and Gosnell. The result is callous death. This is who we are.

  13. She looks really sick in the mugshots released. Hopefully she'll get some help besides the state prison corporation she's heading to for life. There's no rehabilitation in corporate run prisons.

  15. Another "American Tragedy". Morganelli needs to take a breath here. Death penalty? I think not and whoever his political handlers are..they need to reel him in..fast. He is obviously going to use this case to his political advantage and get as much pr as he possibly can get. Everybody loses on this one and he does not deserve to make a political profit off of it. He is now offically off on his own and no longer serving the public but only himself.

  18. A HUman being just like YOU and me was killed. Previously, two HUman beings were surgically killed and removed. Two HUmans just like you and me. We need to recognize all life as sacred. At conception, during growth in the womb and even when they are drugged and drunk up. Let's care for each other. Know your neighbor. Care for them. That's why they live next door. You can help prevent this from happening.

  19. So putting this person to death will satisfy your warped mind? Some christian you are. Radical forgiveness is probably not a word you can comprehend. Jesus talked about it often..in your beloved Bible. Try reading it for a change of pace.

  21. "Another "American Tragedy". Morganelli needs to take a breath here. Death penalty? "

Morganelli did not state whether he would seek the death penalty. He said it is the kind of case in which the death penalty can be imposed bc the victim is under age 12. I think he's probably months away from making that decision.

I am philosophically opposed to the death penalty, and do not like abortion for much the same reason - all human life is sacred. I will state that, in cases where Morganelli has sought the penalty, he has not advocated for death. He just lays out the aggravating factors and lets the jury make the call. Most local death penalty opponents know this about him.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sure a jury could impose it..they could also aquit her. Morganelli did not have to say that. That job belongs to the judge who charges her trial jury if there is one. The statement made by him is incendiary and unnecessary at this point in an investigation. Stick a mic in front of him and he will say most anything to promote himself.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The DA did not say it. He was asked by a reporter whether the death penalty could be imposed, and answered as he did. He would have to give notice of his intentions well in advance of the trial. He was not promoting himself, but was answering questions about a crime that someone else had committed. In fact, he cut off the questions once they became repetitive. Using this as a basis for attack is nonsense.

  24. Yes, Life is precious. I believe Truman saved countless lives by ending WW2 with the death penalty like bomb drop on Hiroshima. The Japanese committed murder at pearl harbor. If this women is convicted of 1st degree then let the jury decide if capital punishment is warranted.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 2:48..you know nothing of this woman's history except what you read here. Try letting the story reveal itself as the investigation progresses...your ignorance is showing. Morganelli deserves nothing and especially not applause.

  27. I have known Amanda for 15 years, she has been my daughters best friend for those 15 years up until a year ago when drugs took over...Yes what she did was so horrible and i don't understand why she did it. What i do know is Amanda suffered from severe depression, her parents lived like hoarders, there home was horrible with dead animals and whatever else lived in that house and she grew up that way, among the other problems she had and suffered from. She has a sickness and needed and still needs help, so before you go and judge someone for what they did yes even murder you also need to understand the mental status of this person who i knew as a loving, caring wonderful girl who watched and played with my kids, who watched my grandson.

  28. to Anonymous,
Just want to know why you are blaming the democrats? First all I am a democrat and I would never condone anyone killing their baby. You are going by how you feel about Abortions. In some places abortion is legal, so um yea that has nothing to do with it. Her baby was born and she killed it, it was her choice I don't care if she was on drugs, alcohol or nothing. It was still a decision she made. POINT, BLANK, PERIOD!!!

  29. Anonymous,

Life begins when you take your first breath, not at conception. The Bible says that God breathed into Adam's nostrils, THEN he became a living soul not before but after then means after. When do you take your first breath, when you are born you are not taking breaths like you do when you are born you would drown, right? The mom is the baby's lifeline it breaths through the umbilical cord until it is born and can breath on it's own and yes sometimes a breathing machine if need be. That is what God's word says and it really doesn't matter how you feel about it, THAT'S THE TRUTH....

    1. How about when David talked about how GOD knew him from his mother's womb, from the time his mother conceived him?? Your a human and creation of GOD at conception not when you take your first breath!!!

  30. Not disputing that she had a messed up life, but it's not a crutch. Everyone's life sucks on some level. But she killed a baby. She may be depressed, or god knows what else... but she killed. a baby. I'd feel better if the punishment was just getting her tubes tied. And then being appointed some deep counseling.

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of everyone using their life problems as an excuse to ruin everyone else's life that they come in contact with. Take some responsibility for your actions!
