Upper Mount Bethel Employee Allegedly Embezzles From Rec Fund

Office Clerk Amy Fields, a ten year veteran employee of Upper Mount Bethel Township, is under investigation for having embezzled money from the recreation fund, according to inside Township sources. Although the exact figure at this point unknown, it is believed to be several thousand dollars.

Fields, whose name is still listed on the Township telephone directory, did not respond to a telephone inquiry. Another Township employee stated that Fields was not at the office. A telephone call to Manager Maureen Sterner has not been immediately returned.

At this time, it is unknown whether Supervisors will handle this matter privately or turn it over to authorities. Some of them, including Chairman Judith Henckel, face re-election contests. Fields reportedly made full restitution this morning.

The trick to stealing from your employer is to take things that are unlikely to be noticed when they go missing, rolls of TP, handsoap, computer paper, ink pens, the odd fiver out of a coworkers purse. This lady must have had a serious addiction to feed, scratch tickets, whippets, QVC, its really quite sad.

I once embezzled a roll of TP from an employer (true story). I had to work Christmas Day and everything was closed and I knew I was out at home. I felt so guilty that I made full restitution the next business day. No authorities were involved.

The trick to stealing from your employer is to return it before anyone notices. This lady is a few fries short of a happy meal to think that at some point someone wouldn't notice thousands missing from a rec fund. GEEZ.

With these qualifications she should be running for County Executive.

It's not like she covered up a family member's destruction of a police cruiser.

TP is a frequent target for embezzlement. They should establish strong internal controls like segregation of duties, sequentially numbering the rolls, sign in and out logs, comparison reports can also help. These controls tells the would-be TP embezzler that management means business. If that works, then maybe use some controls for the Rec Fund.

Nor did Callahan, and I investigated that matter more thoroughly than anyone.

This is why smaller municipalities need to be consolidated so a check and balance system can be put in place.

... or bigger sums can be stolen.

9:40 am you are ignorant if you think UMBT is a "smaller municipality". Look at the population. The largest in the slate belt. Now if it was Portland or Tatamy, Chapman, Stockertown, then maybe.

WTF would consolidation accomplish? That's just insane. Audits and due diligence is required at all levels of government. Even then people sin.

It's a shame, I hope it's not true
