Just in time for her birthday, Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan and local civil rights activists unveiled a memorial stone on Saturday, April 27, in honor of Coretta Scott King.
This dedication took place at Martin Luther King Park, located on Carlton Avenue, before about eighty onlookers. Before the event started, some of the children were convinced that Martin Luther King (MLK) died in the pocket park that bears his name. But Tomacene Nickens, Callahan's former kindergarten teacher, set the kids straight. She described this wife of the martyred civil rights leader, who took up the banner after her husband was struck down by an assassin's bullet. "She filled a void at a time when we needed her most," noted Callahan.
Civil rights activist Frankie West, one of the founders of the annual Martin Luther King March, was honored with a citation and a Moravian Star. West explained that first march had just four participants, but has grown to over 200. It ends at MLK Park.
While waiting for the ceremony to start, Pastor Melvin Tatem wanted to see if he could still ride a bike. His Grace Deliverance Baptist Church is moving to Broad Street.
Thanks to the Cops 'n Kids program, children were treated to free books.
Callahan spends time with Bethlehem's most precious asset - its children.

^^^^^ wow.. I thought the same thing! There are some other labels that would be more fitting. But, anything positive, they would not be.
ReplyDeleteInasmuch as he was the driving force behind the memorial stone and participates every year in the MLK march, I think the label is fair.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen the coverage of a politician swing so widely by a commentator in my life. I personally like John, but wow he could have really used you being a bit nicer in 2010.
ReplyDeleteThis is not coverage of a politician. This is coverage of a City event, for a weekly newspaper. Yesterday was Coretta Scott King's birthday. Try focusing on that if you can.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of cowards say mean and nasty things about people and refuse to be identified? They have venomous tongues and use a blog because they are too much of a coward to let people know what they think or who they are. Character asassination of everyone seems to be the rule.

ReplyDeleteNo I ment McClure. The rest have way to much baggage to get elected. McClure is clearly the best candidate sorry he was on the right side of the Gracedale issue and continues to fight for all county tax payers.

ReplyDeleteWell I'm thankful that there's someone out there fighting for these people. They are under attack and they provide services good services that the private's don't. Mr. McClure is out for everyone he has pledged not to raise taxes and your boy will raise taxes look at the city he's in now. McClure is by far the most qualified and will represent the county the best.
ReplyDeleteA "no tax" pledge is irresponsible. It's blatant pandering. I didn't like it when George Bush did it. I didn;t like it when Tom Corbett did it. And I don't like it when "Maclure" does it.
