Will Dan McCarthy Take Cunningham's Job?

Dan McCarthy
Now that Lehigh County Exec Don Cunningham has been tapped to head up the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC), who will take over the reins in Lehigh County? Under that County's Home Rule Charter, Cunningham's successor must be, like him, a Democrat. Commissioners get first shot at making the appointment. But if they fail, it goes to the courts.

It's certainly possible that a Republican Commissioner like Scott Ott, who ran for the job and was narrowly defeated, could switch parties. But it's also highly unlikely.

I've been told that Commissioner Dan McCarthy, a Democrat, is interested in serving on an interim basis. I have been unable to speak to Dan so I don't know if this is true.

Who should Commissioners pick?

  1. Dennis Pearon would be acceptaable as would McCarthy. Some claim Cunningham's people are pushing former dumped Whitehall Exec. Dan McNeil.

Ciunnngham gave McNeil a patronage job in of all places human services. he has been hidden there for somnme time. Dispite the fact the guy has zero qualificatfions or experience.

They threw out a smart experienced guy to make room for this guy, cause he brings union money.

I think the Republicans on Council must not allow that move and demand an end to the patronage jobs.

  2. Bernie, Is this Dan McCarthy fellow the same one that wants to play judge in Lehigh County. I wish these young whipper-snappers would make up their minds

  3. Dan did run for judge against Doug Reichley.

  4. Dan McCarthy would be an excellent choice. Would he get the votes?

  5. Don't underestimate Scott Ott's sleaze factor here.

I hope to hell/back it's not Danny McNeil. Nice guy, but not all that bright.

  6. It would be a nice way for Dan to exit his work in county gov't. He'd be able to function as a steward for two budgets. He knows county gov't pretty well and certainly demonstrates keen ability to learn what he doesn't know.

The downside is that we would lose his voice on the commission. the commissioners would appoint a replacement to fill that vacancy, which is up for re-election in 2013.

  8. I think that is a given since McNeil doesn't serve on the commission and isn't up for re-election in 2013.

But yes, I was referencing Dan McCarthy.

  9. How the Hell does McNeil, an old labor union organizer, qualify for working in human services? what the hell could he do?

Talk about political patronage. Wonder how much that job cost?

  10. McCarhty would be an excellent pick if the commissioners want an even-tempered person who will work with them and do a solid budget to their specifications.

They're only a year out from an election where Scott Ott wins, so why rock the boat now and risk enraging the voters by flipping a republican or something?

  11. Dan McNeil is qualified---like it or not. He ifs the former Township Executive of Whitehall, which is the second or third largest municipality in Lehigh County.

And he probably has the political pull with the big money republicans to do it.

  12. "And he probably has the political pull with the big money republicans to do it."

Laughable: the guy lost in a primary to Ed Hozza, who, while smart, is not a glad-handing pol. But hey, McNeil thinks highly of himself. I hope he puts his name in and then even decides to run himself. no D will want to associate with him.

  13. It is really sad that qualified people lose jobs while an old union organizer can buy a county job.

I hope he runs, he can get beat again. He better keep his head down because he shouldn't even have the job he has.

  14. Dan McCary is a great option. He has the county expierence and the temperment to handle the political issues.

Heaven help us if Ott becomes exec! He is so tea party obsessed.

The GOP controls the county commissioners, but there is no power there except to be a nuisence. About 70% of the budget is the legal system and most spending is mandated. That is why they can only debate the zoo budget.

  15. McNeil won't get it because Percy would make sure that got torpedoed big time. McNeil is lucky to have a job at the county.

  17. Only McNeil himself could have written that quote at 1:16 pm. That is to funny. Congratulations taxpayers that paycheck is on you.

  18. All I see is a bunch of nasty people bashing each other. Stand up and do something instead of bashing those that do or try to do.

  19. Just who or what is a "Dan McNeil" and why should I as a Lehigh County resident care?
