Stop Peeing at the Courthouse Parking Garage

Sheriff Randy Miller has noticed the smell. He's also seen contraband and drunks, roaming through the parking garage located next to the Northampton County Courthouse. Worse than that, he's concerned about judges who put in a hard 15 minutes of work every day, getting harassed on their way to their cars. So he's proposed, and Council last night unanimously approved, a parking deck surveillance system.  Price tag? $24,000.

The cameras will feed into the Sheriff's dispatch center, as well as 911. Sheriff Miller argued this syystem is needed "to protect our employees and our property."

I thought it was already there, so I stopped peeing in the garage long ago.

A complete waste of money and a lie about judges working 15 hours to support the waste. Cameras won't keep judges safe. They simply provide evidence after the crime. Here's an idea: how about Panto cleans up his city, at least to the point where judges may reach their cars in safety. Good God. The courthouse isn't even safe in Panto's Easton.

I’m glad to see that you are posting the price tag. Council did very little to investigate the details of this proposal. Now I can see three democrats easily jumping to throw away money at a moments notice but not one republican nor the self described fiscal conservative himself Ken Kraft even bothered to question the price or even the efficacy of it usefulness. Little disappointing.

Seth, Before this matter comes up in County council, it is reviewed in the Finance Committee. That meets the day before, on Wednesday, starting at 4 PM.

I'm sorry to tell you I missed that meeting so I do not know exactly what was discussed. I wish i could tell you definitively that price was or was not discussed. But if you recall, the Sheriff was there at Council's request bc Steve DeSalva was unable to answer all their questions.

I suspect that price, along with other questions about response time, were discussed.

Also, one can be be a Democrat and be fiscally conservative. One can be an R and be a spendthrift.

It was nice to see you at the meeting.

The cameras will be monitored 24/7 by the 911 center and during working hours by the sheriff's department as well. So If someone is being attacked or there is vandalism it will be immediately detected and law enforcement can be called to action. Plus then there is evidence of the crime. There are many evening meetings at the courthouse and those who park in the garage will be able to feel a little safer. There were three bids and this company was the lowest. Money will come from the bond that funded the parking garage renovations.

@ Seth Vaughn:

You kidding right, you make 1 meeting and you jump to conclusions and mention my name.

At least I pay taxes in the county, and actually have been living on my own since I was 18 yrs old.

And YOU?

Wow, Ken Kraft has a Ron Angle temper.

Only when someone makes foolish comments. If he had a legitimate reason to slam Council, if we really did not review something and just spent money, then he would have every right to slam us and me.

hey K Kraft, why didnt the garage already have a security system? one would think it is standard operating procedure to secure facilities that park judges and jurors alike... pennywise and puind foolish

I can't answer that question, I have been on Council since January, the garage and the new addition have been there for what 10 years now and the garage much longer? You will have to ask someone who was on council in that time period
