I've told you about Ann McHale's behavior at Thursday's Council meeting, where she lashed out after being caught in a Sunshine Act violation. Not only did she engage in childish name-calling, but she also said I should mind my own business. Last time I checked, the Open Meetings Law is my business.This violation occurred in the presence of Easton Patch's Tom Coombe and The Morning Call's Jenna Portnoy. I was disappointed that neither reporter wrote about a Council member who thumbed her nose at a law requiring a basic level of transparency. And sure enough, anons began suggesting that the whole thing was made up. there was this - "This is another O'Hare slam piece. He never lets facts get in the way of one of his attacks." - and this - "Bernie seems to have made an accusation, without any substantiation."
It took awhile, but in Sunday's Politics as Usual, Portnoy corroborates what happened.
"Ten minutes before the start of Thursday's Northampton County Council meeting, council members trickled in and gathered behind the dais.
"A majority of the nine-member board began discussing a union contract listed on the upcoming agenda for their official action.
"Blogger Bernie O'Hare, a player in the county's effort to sell Gracedale nursing home, was sitting in earshot – as were two reporters – and called up to the council: 'You are engaging in deliberations and that is a violation of the Sunshine Law.'
"Councilwoman Ann McHale, a Democrat who is not seeking re-election this year, shot back: 'Shut your fat mouth,' and later: 'Mind your own business, jerk.'
"They traded barbs for a few moments and then council solicitor Phil Lauer took his seat.
"McHale said to him, 'Apparently we're not allowed to discuss anything.'
"O'Hare to Lauer: 'It's a good thing you're here.'"
Glad she'll be gone soon. What a horrible public servant.

ReplyDeleteMost are beginning to realize that Gracedale is going away, regardless of the referendum's outcome. It's causing the rhetoric to get ugly. I urge supporters of the sale to follow Gentleman John Stoffa's lead and calm the level of discourse. The poorly written referendum grants him wide latitude to do as taxpayers wish. For all the bluster of the loud side, I would not want to play poker against Stoffa.

I do not condone excessive use of vulgarities, nor do I like personal attacks. But in my view, McHale's behavior and comments on Thursday night open the door to precisely this kind of reaction. If she wants to lash out with personal attacks from her throne, I see no reason why people should not be allowed to launch their own personal attacks against her. So I am allowing it, but I won't do it bc we bottom-feeding bloggers have standards, damn it!

She has been a champion of her district since day one. She has the backbone to take on that bone head Angle and spit him out after she takes him down. She was on the RIGHT SIDE in supporting the Gracedale referendum. O'Hairy, you are a SORE LOSER who will pick on a classy, outstanding woman to satisfy your sick ego. It is unfortunate that Ann is leaving council because no one could have defeated her in the primary or general election. You make fun of her facial expressions and weight. ReplyDeleteActually, I've never attacked McHale's weight or even her facial expressions. I've attacked her for thumbing her nose at the Sunshine Act. I've allowed the personal attacks from the anons bc she opened the door with her own remarks, which I've never seen a Council member direct at a member of the public, with the exception of Charles Dertinger. We all now what happened to him. We also all know what happened to her when she tried to topple Stoffa.

ReplyDeleteI'm not forgetting Ron, who can be rough. But I can't think of a single instance in which he attacked a member of the public over his weight or the way he looks or because he is different. He seems to reserve his wrath mostly for other elected officials and bureaucrats.
