The death of a young Iranian girl, Neda Soltani, may have done more to damage the legitimacy of Iranian government than any election fraud. Her last moments are caught on a graphic youtube video. I won't post it. I saw about half of it, and that was enough for me.
"Supreme guide" Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the real source of power, delivered a speech on Friday. Most noteworthy about that was the absence of many senior leaders from Iran's military/security establishment.
And that was before Neda had been shot through the heart.

THIS was a tragedy,,,

It certainly was, Alfonso. I only watched half the video and could not sleep last night. I feel very bad for her father and for all Iranians.
Many people do not know that women in Iran and several other mideastern countries are treated by the men there as sub humans. Back in the late 1970's, the Shah of Iran was forced out of the country... and for what?? He wanted to give women the right to vote!!!!!!!!!!
Would this have been a tragedy had it not been caught on tape? Would it have this much attention had it been in an Iraqi war zone? Etc., etc., etc.
While Neda was a tragedy, I cannot help but ask questions like these.
A.J., the answer is yes; more. Remember Abu Ghraib and the inbed reports of unjustified civilian shootings by coalition troops.
Far less information is available from the mullah's Iran. I fear her murder is a small fraction of similar incidents that will never be known.
The election results are immaterial when you consider that the mullahs are still in charge and call the shots.
Maybe burgeoning civil liberties (e.g. free markets, women's rights) in Iraq will re-charge Iran's middle class and student populations to seek their own.
May she rest in peace and have not died in vain.

Neo-cons championed the reverse domino theory, simply stated that if you create a viable democractic republic in the Middle East (ie, Iraq) the autocratic regimes (ie, Iran) will begin to fall. Next up . . . Pakistan.
Obama is weak as sin on Iran, Darfur,N Korea etc. We are all in big trouble with this WEAK president.
