On his Facebook page, Lamont McClure wonders how he could have lost the Pa.07 Congressional race in the face of a poll right before the election showing that he had the highest net favorable by about 5%. His favorables are actually much lower than those of John Morganelli when he ran for Congress a few years ago, and he lost as well. The polling might be wrong, but I believe that there are three reasons why McClure fared so poorly. First, Brooks' portrayal of himself as an Everyman resonated. Second, though McClure likely had nothing to do with the negative campaigning by LeanLeft against Brooks and Croswell, it probably backfired. Third, McClure himself made unnecessary enemies during his eight years as NorCo Exec.
Results are still unofficial, but the combined four county result shows that McClure actually finished 3rd of 4 candidates. Brooks (28,078); Crosswell (14,528), McClure (13,724) and Obando-Derstine (12,136).
A Morning Call account claims McClure lost every district in NorCo, his home county. That is inaccurate. He certainly was blown out in Bethlehem and Easton, but did manage to pick up some voting districts in Bethlehem Tp (where he lives), E Bangor, Lower Saucon, Plainfield, Upper Mt Bethel, Upper Nazareth, Washington and Williams Tp. He lost Wilson Borough, where he was an ardent advocate for the Dixie tax break. His showing was certainly disappointing, but his message reached some voters. Perhaps he should have done better in his home county, but that is Brooks' home county as well.
Where he really got hammered was in Lehigh County. Ryan Crosswell, who just moved to the Lehigh Valley in January, beat McClure by 804 votes. McClure was even beaten by Obando-Derstine, and finished 4th in the county that matters most.
McClure and Crosswell are both attorneys. Their polished style ordinarily would help them, but voters were looking for someone with whom they could identify. Rightly or wrongly, and I believe wrongly, that found that person in Bob Brooks. He had the right message for this race, to say nothing of money and endorsements.
This campaign was marred by a slurry of negative attacks from a PAC calling itself "LeanLeft". They were aimed at Brooks and Crosswell and attempted to prop up McClure. This group is thought to have been a Republican front, although hard proof is yet to be found. While negative campaigning usually works, it appears to have backfired. I think many voters may have been turned off by the over-the-top attacks as well as the portrayal of McClure as the "progressive."
Finally, McClure has been his own worst enemy. In his eight years as county executive, he made many enemies he never needed to make. He actively worked against the re-election of Lori Vargo Heffner, who as NorCo Council President, voted with him 90% of the time. His frosty style with people who do not know him alienated many county employees, and yes, some of them vote. And I don't know what he was thinking, but it was amazingly stupid for him to call the boss of a county council member just weeks before his election in an attempt to pressure that person to vote for a tax break to facilitate the building of luxury apartments.
This was McClure's race to lose, and he did.
Bernie Lead Left is 100% a right wing group with hard proof, digging around html you can find their funding came from WinRed the GOP version of Dems ActBlue. Punchbowl found this and it’s been widely reported. They’re also now doing ads for a whacko in Texas that’s called for concentration camps. On Lamont he lost because he stopped campaigning last summer he had no campaign staff did not organize or recruit canvassers to get his message out or have any money. He sent out a few mailers but I don’t recall any digital or other ads. He even only got real yard signs about 10 days before the election. None of these things alone wins or loses but everything together just shows he did not take it seriously. (If he did he might have won and maybe Brooks never runs) Not sure where he goes from here maybe he tries for Boscolas seat if she doesn’t run again in 4 years doubt he will be alone there.
ReplyDeleteNo real hard proof. Some site claims metadata showing the WinRed link, but I have not seen it. I agree it is likely Republican.
DeleteThe man is not authentic. The way he speaks and acts sounds fake and arrogant. He sounded way too much like the typically politician down in dc and that doesn’t relate to the common folks. Bob brooks comes off as your ordinary person that voters like. An attorney who sat at a desk his whole life and or a firefighter who has done real work and helped thousands in need. This was a no brainer for many and the votes showed. Brooks will win in November.
ReplyDeleteMaybe not---Once Ryan and his staff ge into his background and the issues regarding the family--he just might not make it out of the gate.
DeleteI predict a major blue wave coming in the fall. It don’t matter who is on the ticket the blue wave is coming. Looked what happened last year for county council the people came out and voted blue right down the ticket.
DeleteMcClure came in third because he is an asshole and has offended far too many people with his bullying tactics (ex Dixie). The chickens came home to roost. He didn’t even come close in his home Northampton county ! He is done in politics…..thankfully !
ReplyDeleteHe shouldn’t have put his face on anything. He is an ugly bloated buffoon with really weird hair
ReplyDeleteHe looked very sloppy & unhealthy in his commercials.
DeletePerhaps its the curtain finally coming down on the "good Ole boy" cabal that was Dertinger, McClure, Morganelli and their buddies. They deserve it, we deserve better.
ReplyDeleteMcClure wasn't able to raise enough money from the get go and Shapiro's early endorsement of Brooks was the game changer.
ReplyDeleteI’m answer to your question “ Why Did McClure Finish Third in Pa.07 Congressional Race?” Because he is a turd
ReplyDeleteHonestly I think it is even simpler than your analysis, although I don't dispute your points at all. He was the "old" face in an election with an electorate looking for "new".
ReplyDeletePolished? He always looks disheveled, like that business man at the end of the bar every day at 4 PM. His disgraceful management of Gracedale cannot be overstated. Voters had simply had enough of him.
ReplyDeleteI am not referring to his physical appearance, but to his speaking style. None of these candidates are model material.
DeleteWhat poll are you talking about ?
ReplyDeleteHe's arrogant, SB, bully, liar, woman hater, drunk! Those are just some of his finest qualities. That's why he lost.
ReplyDeleteI've no evidence that McClure has an alcohol problem. His cabinet included three women and he endorsed a woman for Exec. He is no woman hater.
DeleteLamont finished second in Northampton and Carbon and a distant fourth in Lehigh and Monroe. Since no one really knew him in Lehigh and Monroe it’s doubtful his “frosty” personality had less to do with that than having Northampton County under his name on the ballot, and being the second Northampton County candidate in ballot order.
ReplyDeleteNot a great politician. Ran a shitty campaign. His past challengers were terrible candidates, so he was never really tested. You hit on most of the reasons, and it all adds up to a loss.
ReplyDeleteThe publicity McClure received after his budget for 2026 was presented had more to do with his losing than any other issue. Every time you read about the problems in Northampton County, there was a McClure budget issue attached to the problem. The poor publicity about The Northampton County Nursing Home (GRACEDALE), The poor staffing of the County Prison, under funding County obligations to his workers, not to mention his atrocious reputation for being a bully, all contributed to his poor showing in this election. It was more important for him to have eight years with a no tax increase record than it was to raise taxes and fund adequately the County mandated obligations and programs. Even you attacked him on certain issues. You also attacked BROOKS and the other candidates however, McClure was in a position to make a difference and he fell short of that opportunity.
ReplyDeleteThose issues matter a lot to people inside the county government. The public at large has a vague idea that something is wrong at Gracedale. But outside of that, the public at large knows very little about jail staffing, Lamont's war against a County Council President, his decision to skip a payment to the pension funds or his involvement in the proposed tax break for luxury apartments. Let me add here that McClure also managed to do a lot of good things as Exec in very trying times. His actions saved lives. I can forgive a lot of flaws for that.
Deletepolished style, he's more like a slime ball, but brooks is more crooked. JM retains his seat easily
ReplyDeleteVoters are stupid, and we know that because Trump won twice.
ReplyDeleteHas it even occurred to you that perhaps YOU are the stupid one?
Delete7:43 - Actually Trump won three times, and you’ll enjoy his fourth term even more than this one.
DeleteI think what surprises me is how many good Democrats were taken in by Crosswell. These are the same people who share memes on Facebook like “I just don’t understand how Jan. 6th wasn’t a deal breaker.” It wasn’t for Crosswell.
ReplyDeleteI think Crosswell would have won had the campaign lasted longer. He is a polished speaker like McClure but comes across as far more sincere. Lamont just does not, he is too guarded. Crosswell also is a Marine who served in combat, the only candidate who served in the military. I believe he would have attracted some GOP voters.
DeleteWell, luckily now that we’ve expanded Election Day to Election Month, we’ve shortened the time to really get to know ANY new candidates.
DeleteThat there were four (relatively unknown) non-incumbents on the democratic side made that even worse.
Usually, it just works to the favor of the incumbent, as it shortens the time that people have to find out about any challengers. If I didn’t know better, I would think that’s the real reason that our legislators lengthened the voting season in the first place.
McClure should have hired Mike Fleck as his Campaign Manager.
ReplyDeleteAll these people have personality disorders, the entire bunch.
ReplyDeleteBernie is talking about the Tavern Research poll. It’s an online AI thing. Showed McClure most popular candidate in the race. He wasn’t more popular than SHAPIRO though lol
ReplyDeleteThe Primary is over. The Dems in the LV did their usual circular firing squad. Now lots of supporters of the "right" candidate will continue to offer their insightful "analysis", to no good end. Who really cares. Let's just accept the results and move on to the General Election.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm...
ReplyDeleteA Union Firefighter with High-powered endorsements
(vs.)
2 term County Executive who screwed County Union employees, endorsed a nit-wit to replace him and actively worked against members of his own party, including two members on Northampton County Council.
What could go wrong?
He cannot believe he lost but he did. He should be kicking his own butt but he’ll probably have an entire list of excuses as to why he didn’t win (none of the reasons his fault). PA7 dodged a bullet here and will do it again in November. Even Democrats know Brooks is NOT the guy to represent us in Congress.
ReplyDeleteRich Wilkins has an in-depth analysis at his new blog Apocalypse Vibes. He also talks sports there too.
ReplyDeleteGood piece. He argues that the DCCC picks the candidate, not us, and that county government is no route to Congress.
DeleteHe would be wrong about that. There are several former county executives serving in Congress including Marc Molinaro, Tom Souzzi, George Latimer, and Johnny Olzewski in the House. On the Senate side, Chris Coons and Angela Alsobrooks were county executives just prior to their election to the upper chamber.
DeleteWho cares? Another self-anointed "expert" wanting to be the big fish in the small pond that is insider Democratic politics in the Lehigh Valley. Hello, Captain Obvious.
DeleteGood riddance to bad rubbish.
ReplyDeleteMcClure is his own worst enemy- arrogant, phony, and with the worst personality of any Pol I've ever met. His "progressive" message was terrible. Leave it to my Party to nominate the worst possible candidate- a crook. Croswell unfortunately is a carpetbagger, but worked hard and was by far, the best candidate. MacKenzie was given a gift on election night.
ReplyDeleteI'll agree Lamont is his own worst enemy.
DeleteIsn't Lamont's wife a magisterial judge in Northampton County? I doubt very much if he would run for Judge while his wife is a Magistrate. I also doubt he would run for District Attorney. I personally think he is done in Northampton County. He left Northampton County residents a real mess and it is going to take several years to get things back on track. Zrinski will be your next Senator after Boscola. Go Tara. If she straightens out the mess she inherited no one will beat her. Go Tara.
ReplyDeleteSure she will…..wanna buy a bridge in New Jersey?
DeleteMcClure will definitely run for something again. Most likely judge as he copies everything Morganelli does.
DeleteShe's incompetent
DeleteLamont McClure left Northampton County with the best municipal bond rating in the Lehigh Valley. Bernie did a nice job reporting why McClure did what he did with the pension fund. Ask the average taxpayer if the want to be overtaxed to overfund a pension.
ReplyDeleteEaston has the best rated sewage treatment facility in the state. Yea, Panto for Governor. Panto for President. Yea
DeleteAsk the taxpayer if they would rather have a Congressman that didn't give Cola's to his employees and decent wages to his employees or a Congressman that would do the responsible thing and give COLA'S to his "seniors" and decent wages to his employees. The above comment was made by Lamont. Wait and see how much taxes go up to correct what he ______-up.
Ryan Crosswell is a fraud, but his campaign was brilliantly conceived and very well executed. My guess as a first time candidate he had very little to do with it. I think the decision to run for Congress which he made in 2024 - he had yet to settle on a District was probably inspired in part by wealthy California trial lawyer Gerald Singleton. The relationship between Singleton and Croswell was foundational to his campaign. Singleton is a well known, large donor to Democratic candidates and causes. He most likely helped seed the very impressive early money Crosswell raised. You can’t fundraise before you file with the FCC, but in the Trump Era who cares right ?
ReplyDeleteI cant help remembering all the union staff who voted for mcclure. They had the ear of mcclure in the beginning. Made some huge mistakes because of that. Gracedale was hurt by those decisions. Eventually many saw the true man. Unfortunately the damage was done. I give him credit for open space. One and only good thing he did. Not a nice human being at all. Brooks however is a sad option. Let the progressive fringe keep trying. It won't work.
ReplyDeletePlease give us an example of how he was not nice to you or someone you have first hand knowledge of him not being nice to. He’s a prick, but a bet he wasn’t one to you.
Delete10:51 - The only blunder with Gracedale is keeping it in county control. Sell it and let someone else run it.
DeleteAll nursing homes have to accept the poor, but they are currently bailed out by the county housing them at Gracedale. So the taxpayer then ends up paying.
If you sell Gracedale, the people still are taken care of, but it comes at the expense of lowering the private homes’ profits instead of from the taxpayers’ pockets.
There are only 12 county-owned facilities in all of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. Somehow those other counties have found a way to handle the problem without shoveling millions of taxpayer dollars into their own facility each year.
Let’s face it. Crosswell ran a campaign to finish second. His campaign’s refusal to engage Brooks in any meaningful way was the strategic blunder of the race. They were just afraid a paid back and forth would have only benefited McClure.
ReplyDeleteI hope he runs again. I enjoyed voting against him and would like to do it again. Remember when his council attendance was horrible? I do. I read about it here. He's just lazy. That's a trait that's nearly impossible to shake.
ReplyDeleteRyan Crosswell must be so pissed at the D.C. consultants who wasted all his money. Great second place finish geniuses.
ReplyDeleteIt's very simple: , McClure has a terrible personality, only 2nd to John Brownpants.
ReplyDelete
