Holland Cautions That Gracedale Might Need County Contribution This Year

Dave Holland is a newly elected member of Northampton County Council. We're lucky to have him because he was once a Gracedale Administrator when Premier managed the home and turned it around. He attended a meeting at Gracedale this week and cautioned fellow members of Council last night that a county contribution to the home might be needed this year.

The home is budgeted to require no county contribution, but that's based on the assumption that census will be 520 or greater. As of yesterday, census was only 500.

Holland went on to explain that Gracedale relies on what he calls "supplemental non-operating revenue" as opposed to the revenue received from the residents. This includes the IGT and has in the past included COVID funding. "Those funds are probably not gonna be as available moving forward. ... it's important for you to know that, and I think it's important for the public to know that that may be coming down the road based on some of the unknowns of that non-operating supplemental income."

  1. No one from the administration knows that? No other Council Member knows that? Sounds like Bernie has a man crush or Council and the administration are a lot worse then we knew.

    1. Bernieohare to 12:44, given that Gracedalr’s budget called for it to break even at a census of 520 and the actual census is below that and this information was just learned by Holland yesterday, I suspect most members of council were unaware. He has expertise with nursing homes and we really need him. As for my personal feelings, I have never spoken to him.

    2. Expertise with nursing homes?? He was a nurse there for a short period of time. Thats a far cry from an expert at running nursing homes. If this guy is your gracedale savior then that placed is screwed! You need someone who understands the business end of the nursing home business.

    3. He is a nurse. He was not a nurse but an Administrator at both Gracedale and in Monroe County. He was part of Premier, which took a failing nursing home and turned the home around. He knows nursing homes and he knows the business.

    4. He’s been out of the business for years. He teaches at ESU so why he’d want to be on council is curious indeed. It’s not a new revelation by any means that Gracedale is not only poorly run but that it will need financial assistance from somewhere to exist. Anyone not new to council who claims this is a revelation is just not being truthful or hasn’t been looking, hearing or reading about Gracedale.

    5. Dave Holland not only knows more about nursing home care than most, he also has the financial expertise to navigate the Inter Governmental Transfer Funding maze, if it is still in play, to gain millions of dollars without tapping the tax base, and keep Gracedale in the black. He was involved directly in setting up the initial cash flow IGT charts, and will be an asset to the county and council, and can be relied upon for resources to improve census numbers needed to achieve better ratings than currently exist.

  2. I think that was part of the reason Heckman proposed a tax hike for 2026. The fake budget was all politics for a congressional talking point. The spending was based on nothing but politics.

  3. NORCO never learns it's lessons about Gracedale. This game of kick the can has been going on for decades.

  4. Well, no money for Gracedale, open space, or retirement and health care for retirees. Thank you, Lamont. And his best bud Tara is busy forming committees of experts to provide cover for she has not a clue of what to do. Tara go back to being a shill for solar energy, sharing your "expertise" to naive students at community colleges and practicing with your bullhorn for your next "no more plastic straws." Please, someone send her a ticket to California.

  5. This isn’t going to end well for county taxpayers. Should have sold it years ago.

  6. It amazes me that a "business" is run on POSSIBLE funding, instead of being able to sustain itself. No good business, that wants to stay in business, is run that way. Oh, but we have the Zrinski TSAR to handle it now..... Yessh, what a joke.

  7. Who didn’t see this coming. McClure’s praise of no tax increases, but hey, you’re all screwed going forward. Talk about setting up someone to fail.
