NorCo Council's Kumbaya Resolution

As most of you already know, Northampton County Council member Kelly Keegan responded to the recent assassination of right-wing pundit Charlie Kirk by calling him a "monster ... . [H]is wife and kids are better off without him as is the rest of the world. Hopefully her next partner will respect women and children."  Although NorCo Council took no action against Keegan at their Thursday night meeting, they did adopt a completely toothless resolution (you can read it below) , drafted by Tom Giovanni, that in essence calls on all of us to be nice. Isn't that nice? Of course, the resolution was adopted unanimously. A seemingly tearful Kelly Keegan, speaking from her phone and out of sight of the public, made it clear she wanted to second it.  What I want to draw your attention to, however, is Jeff Warren's typical lengthy speech in support of it.

Warren said he was "very disappointed with [Keegan's] extremely, extremely insensitive comments."

Really?

Last year, one of Keegan's most virulent critics passed away unexpectedly. survived by a mother and a sister who loved him. His name was Ed Reagan. When he was alive, he was critical of several elected officials, including Keegan and Easton Mayor Sal Panto. He filed a RTK request with the Easton Srea School District, where Keegan works as a school nurse. At the time of his request, Keegan's husband was also a school director.

What Reagan learned is that Keegan posted 112 social media posts and 23 emails about political issues, including marijuana and alcohol, while she was on the clock. He contended that this violated school district policy. I have no idea if there is such a policy, but if there is, she has continued to violate it. She declined to address his allegations.

When Reagan passed away, Keegan posted this on Facebook:

She actually celebrated his death. And one of those who "liked" her complete lack of empathy was none other than Council member Jeff Warren.

During his homily, Warren took President Trump to task for failing to "exercise calm," "to be reserved," "to try to bring some discourse together." He's right. Trump is divisive. But Warren could have done that, too, when he saw the extremely cruel remarks that Keegan posted about Ed Reagan's death. Instead, he "liked" what she said.

The Kumbaya Resolution

WHEREAS, political violence, intimidation, and threats against public officials and private citizens are destructive to a functioning democracy and public discourse; and

WHEREAS, the United States has a long tradition of resolving political differences through civil debate, dialogue, and peaceful processes; and

WHEREAS, political intimidation and violence have a chilling effect on democratic engagement and threaten the ability of citizens to participate freely in the electoral and political process; and

WHEREAS, public officials, community leaders, and all citizens bear a responsibility to model acceptable public behavior against acts of violence, regardless of ideology or political affiliation; and

WHEREAS, law enforcement agencies and the judicial system must investigate and prosecute all incidents of political violence to ensure accountability and rebuild public trust; and

WHEREAS, strengthening civic education and encouraging civil debate are crucial steps toward building resilient communities and reducing polarization;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Northampton County Council unequivocally condemns all acts of political violence, intimidation, and harassment, no matter their target or justification

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Northampton County Council reaffirms our commitment to upholding democratic values, including freedom of speech, assembly, and expression, as the rightful means for resolving political differences.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Northampton County Council calls upon our members and all citizens to publicly reject violent and hateful rhetoric, condemn unlawful behavior, even when committed by those with whom they typically agree, and support peaceful, constructive engagement in all political activities.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Northampton County Council commits to promoting civic engagement and civil discourse as the foundations of a healthy democracy.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Northampton County Council urges all elected officials to lead by example, tone down inflammatory rhetoric, and dedicate resources to protect free and fair elections and public officials.

  1. This post, my comment, your comment, and everything else regarding this saga is also toothless. Can we focus on things ahead? What’s the status of the dumps expansion? Will a large data center be put in UMBT that sucks up water and electricity causing higher bills that PPL will happily charge us for? Can the local efforts on planning commissions stop those or more warehouses from coming in? Is council really going to pass the tax cut for the Dixie? There’s so many other real issues that impact our lives here.

We already know about Warren and Keegan I think all of our minds are made up about how awful they can be alongside all the other bad politicians we have in droves in the valley. I know I’m wasting my time but I’m tired of the same politics from the same set of pawns with nothing happening but the standard of living here getting worse. God save us all God bless America

  3. There are hundreds of post like this from Keegan and she keeps getting away with these hateful inhumane comments. She needs to be stopped, especially working in a school district. Unfortunately,‘someone will have had an enough of this insane woman and take action into their own hands. If others won’t. Our society doesn’t see any consequences and then people feel engaged to act on their own. We can’t allow this to happen. No more slap on the wrist for Keegan. She should be first by the EASD SCHOOL BOARD if they have any values of their own. Otherwise is so they are in agreement. One of her sick post was Happy National Women’s Day, abort Republicans. Clearly she has mental health issues to say the least.

  4. TeamTzara must be enjoying this. With all the attention on Keegan, Tzara is free to use the controller's office as a front to campaign during usual working hours and attend events not within the scope of controller's duties without fear of scrutiny.

  6. So neither one of them are very nice people. It also seems that KKs entire life evolves around politics and vitriolic social media. Go for a hike or something Geesh.

  7. Despite the seeming lack of enforceable provisions in this resolution, the spirit of it was appropriate.

Council took the high road. They had no other meaningful recourse than to take the opportunity to publicly take turns bashing Keegan for a while. And while that may have been a feel good moment for Republicans, it would have accomplished nothing meaningful.

    1. Council had a number of options they could take, even without the power to remove her from office. They could and probably should strip her of all committee assignments. There is precedent for this as it has happened before. I would have preferred a censure and committee removal to kumbaya, and not just due to her statements about Kirk. Her remarks about Reagan are very disturbing, perhaps more so than what she said about Kirk.

    2. That feel good moment you allude to was felt well beyond only Republicans. Decent, respectful folks come in all stripes. I think we're seeing that writ large with yesterday's event in Phoenix.

  10. Koo Koo Keegan and Jeff Warren are both cowards- they're keyboard Warriors who hide behind their computers and when called out, pretend to show remorse- just 2 awful people!

  11. Her Facebook posts about Easton's disabled kids under Section 504 are her most alarming. And that's saying a lot, considering her celebrity comments regarding others' deaths. EASD refuses to address this. They are more cowardly than Norco Council. She shouldn't be anywhere near children.

  13. Form on line at 1776PAC to report teachers and administrators who posted like Keegan. She's not officially a teacher but in an administrative and education position as a nurse. Fox has the link in an article. For anyone so inclined

  16. Is this story tiresome at this point? Yes. Is it important to keep it still on the front burner and in the public’s eye? Absolutely. Why? Because not doing so lets EASD and Kelly “off of the hook “ thus appearing to condone her behavior. She still doesn’t get it and appears now to be trying to manipulate the situation (and those she can). Thank you, Bernie. This would not have even been a “thing” had you not brought it to the forefront on this blog.

  22. Why don’t we look at this matter logically? I think most can agree that Kelly Keegan wasn’t gifted with tack or a lot of intelligence, but the outrage regarding the Kirk post is overblown. Charlie Kirk knew exactly what to say (whether or not he believed it) to get attention and money. His words inflamed people and in the moment of his death, good sense took a vacation. The Right falls over itself to scream foul, just as the Left does when it feels wronged. If both sides practiced a bit more humanity, Bernie could go back to writing about bike rides. I am so sad that our country has become so divided and all because there are too many who believe the idiocy of Trump. This has given me a headache, so off to bed after taking some Tylenol.

  23. Warren is a shameless poser. His words are usually too long and nonsensical. Many believe he worked this out with Keegan. She never did apologize. This is the net result of the McClure bought stable of politicians. Zirisnki, Waren, Keegan and Kraft. They are all there too represent McClure.

  24. After all these years, it never ceases to amaze me how little people know about school policy and unions and protections afforded to those worst offenders and abusers in the system. There are no real consequences, and most are given soft landings with hand slaps and time off.
Real consequences for criminal activity are almost non existent, because bad action is protected . An elected official ,abusing or over-stepping their official public responsibilities ,has an even wider protective girth because they can only be voted out or must be proven to have perpetrated a horrendous crime before being dismissed.
Lawyers and loopholes have ruined accountability and freed felons at all levels.
