Trump Should Be Commended For Efforts to End War in Ukraine

On Friday, President Donald Trump both figuratively and literally rolled out the red carpet when he met with President Vladimir Putin in Alaska in an effort to end the war in Ukraine. He even applauded the former KGB agent, who kept his right arm straight as he made his way to the waiting Beast. Yesterday, Trump hosted Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accompanied by a host of European leaders. Nothing concrete has been resolved. People still die. In an era where we expect things to happen in 30-second sound bites, news accounts of both meetings sound typically pessimistic. But I come away with one reaction - hope. And as much as I criticize Trump, I do believe he is trying his best to end this conflict.

Trump was just as gracious with Zelenskyy as he was with Putin. The Ukrainian said his meeting with Trump was the best yet. He also called on European leaders to offer their own views He noted that this was the first time that so many heads of state convened together at the White House to discuss ending a war. At one point, he said he was "very honored" by their presence, which is the last thing I expected from a president who has often sounded isolationist tones.

When the group met outside the eyes of the press, Trump even conducted a 40-minute call with Putin to relay the concerns of Russia's neighbors and lay the groundwork for a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy.

Russia wants Ukraine to cede territory, which Zelenskyy lacks the power to do on his own. Ukraine wants security guarantees, and Trump hinted the US might get involved.

JD Vance kept his mouth shut this time.

  1. President Trump has done/is doing many good things to improve the lives of American families, but also for peoples of other nations. He will truly, and deservedly go down as one of America's best presidents.

    But there's a problem.

Not enough in this nation gets to hear of his good works. We have a politically controlled news media that twists and turns his every move as some kind of harmful negative act that must be feared and condemned. We are not only being deceived. People repeat this junk as ignorant lemmings.

Thank you for (occasionally) raising your head above the dirty water, Bernie. More readers need to do the same.

    2. He’s a dictator? LOL. He won both the electoral college and the popular vote. He literally makes people like you deranged. Never seen anything like it. If the guy turned water into wine you would say but but but it’s not good wine. Crazy!

  2. So you're anti-war now? Is this the end of your pro-war, Zelensky slobbering posts? Wasn't the carpet in Alaska the wrong color for peace talks? Better late than never, I guess. You're a pathetic old white liberal. Malcom X had you pegged a long time ago.

    1. 6:15, Go away, Tricia. I support Ukraine and believe Trump is a far cry from the isolationist I thought of him as a noninterventionist that Vance certainly is. He is keeping his friends close, but his enemies closer, following the principles of both The Prince and Art of War. Putin's ongoing attacks obviously bother him, and I suspect that Trump's Slovenian wife, who sees through Putin, no doubt has influenced him. He is trying to end the conflict, and I have to credit him for his effort. I still disagree with him on nearly everything but believe his handling of foreign policy is better than I had hoped.

    2. Trump has ended seven wars or serious conflicts already. As soon as he ends this one Democrats will forget it and start screaming about something else.

    1. Determining if Trump can ban mail voting could take years of court battles. He knows this. What Trump IS doing is putting the topic upfront and center.

  9. Not a big Trump supporter, but I don’t have TDS either. Joe Biden was the worst foreign policy president in a long time. Trump is using unorthodox ways and doing his best to bring peace. Good for him!

  10. Trump and his team have brokered cease fires in:
    Armenia-Azerbaijan
    Thailand-Cambodia
    India-Pakistan
    Congo-Rwanda
Israel-Iran, then had the balls to set back Iran’s nuclear capabilities indefinitely.
If Obama had accomplished this the media would have been hailing him as the second coming of Jesus Christ. The media is a disgrace in this country!

  11. Trump is bucking for a Nobel Prize, so he can’t pull the shenanigans that he did with Zelensky earlier. Really, do you think Trump could find Armenia on a map by himself? However, he is listening to his aids and as we know, it’s the last person he spoke with who has his ear. His new tag line is “I just want to stop the killing.” Yet his policies toward Gaza allows Israel to kill more Gaza civilians daily. My hat is off to Trump’s aids and Rubio who try to keep this dingus in line.

  12. The red carpet treatment and flyover were total psy-ops by Trump. Treat Vlad with respect and then remind him what airpower superiority looks like. "Pssst, hey Vladdy, remember when your country had an air force as powerful as ours?"

Another thing to keep in mind is that Putin and Zelenskyy are not equals. Russia has nearly 5,500 atomic warheads and about 1,500 are deployable; including hair-trigger alert (they can be in the air in minutes). Some speculate if Putin gets cornered, a tactical nuke or a few could be an option and he appears to have hinted at that; perhaps a bluff but perhaps not.

Trump played it well; showed respect and flexed some muscle. Depending on whom the president is/was/could be, the media's coverage was predictable. "Trump bows to Putin. Wastes money on an unnecessary flyover; using the military for his own personal glee." In an alternate universe: "B----/H----- meet Putin in Alaska with tact and diplomacy and flex US military might as a bold statement; shows U.S. is serious and will do what it takes."

  16. “JD Vance kept his mouth shut this time.”

Actually, Vance was right about what he said last time, and it needed to be said. I’d say the difference this time is that Zelensky came into the meeting with the proper attitude and respect for a nation that has helped - and continues to help - his country so greatly.

Unlike the last time, Zelensky didn’t meet with democrat leaders prior to meeting with Trump.

It’s amazing what progress can actually be made when you don’t have democrats directly involved who are just trying to politicize everything and undermine real solutions.

  20. I really looks like Putin is playing Trump with saying everything he wants to hear. Bowing to Russia will only make us weaker and compromise Europe. A win for the sake of a win is not beneficial to the US in the long term. Russia is weaker than ever and we are giving them the upper hand.
