I make an effort to listen to right-wing talk radio for at least a few minutes every day. Between unending commercials for guns, survival kits and Viagra, torrents of hate are unleashed on nearly half of the country. This vitriol is aimed mostly at Democrats, who are vilified and dehumanized ad nauseum. These right-wing radio broadcasts, which are corporate-run and owned, also do their best to savage mainstream news outlets, also corporate-owned and run, as "fake news." And they've succeeded. Public confidence has been undermined in any institution that fails to slant to the right. Now President Donald Trump has taken what really is a war against reality to a whole new level. Instead of killing the message, he is killing the messenger.
In the wake of a negative jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Trump has fired Erika McEntarfer, who headed that agency. He claims that she "rigged" the numbers "to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad... .” Her immediate predecessor, a Trump appointee, called Trump's accusation "groundless." Trump offered no evidence to back up his claim.
When the sky is cloudy and gray, but you insist it is blue and sunny, it fails to change reality. Trump and his right-wing media influencers are not only trying to control the message but are making sure they control the messengers as well.
Whoever replace McEntarfer will have to make sure the next jobs report is shaded to say the sky is sunny and blue.
Trump is doing what authoritarians do. But it fails to change reality, as some are beginning to notive.
Looks like you’ll be a real basket case, Bernie, now that a Grand Jury is being assigned to hear details of the long-running Obama/Clinton/Biden cabal’s activities over recent politics.

All were offered a very generous exit package of $25K bonus, plus numerous other inducements to leave on their own. Evidently, this employee decided to “risk it.”

You indicate that the report indicates that the job decrease is related to trump's tariffs. It does not state a reason. It only reports statistics. You can read it yourself or can rely on right wing talk radio to garble the truth and tell you what you want to hear instead of reality. Yes, these appointments are made by the President and they serve at his discretion, but the President fired this person for being honest and just releasing facts.

He is right to want more accurate (initial) reporting from the people who work for him. While some minor revisions are to be expected, the person reporting the numbers obviously was having trouble preparing reports that could be relied upon.
Government and businesses make huge economic decisions based on the reported figures, so the accuracy of these reports affects the nation’s economy. In light of this, that person’s firing was certainly justified.
I realize that as a democrat you don’t understand the way accountability works, but that’s what happened here.

The BLS always revises its data as more information comes in. It revised the job numbers downward under Biden and Harris, and dd so before the election as well. It complies data and releases reports. As more data is received, reports are revised. That's how it works. And the news sources you cite dutifully reported the numbers released by BLS. They did so before the election as well.

Federal judges controlled the records to protect the privacy of trafficking victims including minors. Biden could not overrule those protections and no president can bypass federal judges to release sealed court evidence to the public.

According to live remarks yesterday from a guest on Fox Business Network, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has been doing a shoddy job of reporting its data. That situation was true all last year, before Trump took office.
ReplyDeleteIt seems the BLS sends out a massive survey to thousands of companies and uses responses to estimate its announcements. Responses from corporations run as low as 50-60%. Yet, the announcements are made anyway, and without explanation. Trump evidently is unhappy about the process used by that agency. As is his habit, he responds by changing out persons in charge. Nothing really unusual here for him. He’s been known known to “take out the hook” quickly in all his endeavors.
Didn't Fox News have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars after they claimed the voting machines were rigged? I wouldn't trust any claim by a Fox News pundit.

Many bi-partisan government workers have successfully and truthfully managed this department for decades. Firing the messenger guarantees that the next person will deliver false numbers as directed by trump. This is like when he got his sharpie out to predict storm patterns in Alabama. He cheats at golf, he cheats at estimating his wealth when he applies for loans, he cheats at little things. I’m afraid on a world scale the US can’t be trusted anymore. So the real numbers have to come from another source because the trump administration can’t be relied on to act truthfully. His “deals” never pan out to be much more than what was already in place. ReplyDeleteBottom line is we’re at 4.2 % unemployment. The JOLTS report showed over 8 million job openings. All the trillions pumped into the economy is running its course. We may see a mild downturn while we transition from a government based economy pumped up by excessive federal spending from COVID, to a more historically normal economy. The Fed was late raising interest rates, allowing inflation not seen in 50 years. Now it’s time to cut, and they are being stubborn, they are risking being late again.

ReplyDeleteWhat Trump defenders fail to grasp is that the monthly jobs report is an estimate based on surveys of numerous businesses. Not all respond immediately so there is always a revision to the numbers. So at times, the revised numbers may show that less or more jobs were added than originally estimated. Over time, this all balances out except during times of economic uncertainty.
