Trump's Attack on Iran's Nuclear Sites Results in Ceasefire

I would never have expected this, but President Donald Trump's attacks at Iranian nuclear sites appears to be on its way to a happy ending. Instead of activating sleeper cells or closing the Strait of Hormuz, I ran has agreed to a ceasefire. Everybody wins. Iran's nuclear dreams have been delayed a few years. Israel has seriously weakened its most belligerent adversary. Iran survives.

Here's how the nonpartisan Institute for the Study of War, which tends to be unbiased, has to say:

US President Donald Trump announced that Iran and Israel agreed to a ceasefire that will go into effect at 12:00 AM ET on June 24. Trump said that Iran would adhere to the ceasefire starting at midnight on June 24 and that Israel would join at noon on June 24. Trump said that the war would officially end at midnight on June 25. Trump congratulated Israel and Iran for “having the stamina, courage, and intelligence” to end the war. Trump announced the ceasefire five hours after Iran conducted a ballistic missile attack targeting US forces in Qatar. A senior Iranian official confirmed to Reuters that Iran agreed to a Qatar-mediated, US-proposed ceasefire.

Iran conducted a retaliatory, but largely symbolic, ballistic missile attack targeting a US airbase in Qatar on June 23. Iran launched 14 medium- and short-range ballistic missiles at the United States’ largest position in the Middle East—al Udeid Airbase—just before 1:00 PM ET. The United States and partner forces intercepted 13 missiles and “set free” one missile on a “nonthreatening” trajectory. Trump confirmed that the Iranian attack did not injure or kill any US servicemembers or Qataris and caused “hardly any damage.” Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Akbar Ahmadian claimed after the attack that Iran fired one missile at al Udeid Airbase for each bomb that the United States dropped on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 21. Initial reports claimed that Iran also fired a single short-range ballistic missile targeting US forces at Ain al Asad Airbase in Iraq, but a US military official refuted that claim.

Key Takeaways:

  • US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire, beginning the evening of June 23. A senior Iranian official confirmed to Reuters that the ceasefire would occur following Qatari mediation.

  • Iran conducted a missile attack targeting the US al Udeid Airbase in Qatar in retaliation for the US strikes on the Iranian nuclear program. The attack was largely symbolic and inflicted no casualties or damage, however.

  • Iranian elite, including some moderate leaders, have reportedly tried to pressure Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to accept a ceasefire or sideline him entirely. It is unclear what role these individuals played in the US-announced ceasefire.

  • Iranian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister for Policy Majid Takht Ravanchi announced that Iran will remain a member of the NPT. Iranian officials have previously threatened to withdraw from the NPT in response to US and Israeli strikes.

  • IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed that the United States likely inflicted “very significant damage” in its strikes on the Fordow nuclear site. Iran may have moved some of its nuclear material to undisclosed locations beforehand, however.

  1. Israel created an opportunity, and Trump had the balls to do it. Hopefully the ceasefire holds.

  2. It looks like Iran and Israel are at it again already. As long as we stay out of it now. We did what had to be done Israel can handle the rest.

  3. Yeah, I'm sure this is all water under the bridge like every time we bomb the Middle East. Anyone ever hear of blow back?

  4. Of course, the key here is how long will any ceasefire last. But, yes, this is a significant development.

There is always a chance some rogue elements or proxy nation for Iran to break up the cease fire in some false flag attack. I really think Israel and its supporters are the least likely to break this agreement.

Analysts describe it all this way. Trump’s actions removed the justification the two sides were using to justify their attacks on each other. Both Trump, and Israel have repeatedly stated over the years, Iran cannot be permitted to have nuclear weapons. Both Trump and Israel got their wish. A ceasefire removes Iran’s need to continue its return fire.

Trump’s message to Israel was quite clear. Now that America has removed the present nuclear threat, America is backing away completely from any further participation in supporting Israel’s further escalation. They are now on their own. Trump did NOT attack Iran, nor the Iranian people. Trump effected the removal of building facilities within Iran that represented a looming threat to world peace.

The biggest loser here is the lucrative military/industrial complex and our many filthy American Congress persons who march to the tune of war because THEY make personal gain from others doing the killing.

Our Congress needs a thorough house-cleaning, to put it mildly. Both Democrats and Republicans there need to be shown the door. We voters must vote to remove dozens of Incumbents. Our present Congress is a mess.

  5. Ceasefire was immediately broke by Iran. No POTUS gets an Iranian ceasefire or cessation of Iran's weapons programs (e.g. Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Obama, Bush 2, Trump). History is informative.

  7. Happy ending is over. Iran fired missiles at Israel, and Israel (rightfully) vows to retaliate. No real surprise, given who the Iran regime is.

That said, I don’t view it as a failure on the part of Trump. Just the reality of the situation.

  8. As of 8:00 AM EDT, it seems the ceasefire is off to a rough start. It's hard to tell from reading various news sources, though. Some, like CNN, are written to carefully avoid giving Trump any credit for anything positive. ABCNews is a little more neutral and objective. The NYTimes begins their headline "Trump lashes out..." (It's more important to showcase Trump's temper than to cue the reader on the topic of the article). The AP and CNBC are light on details, likely because it's still a fluid event or, perhaps, Trump had a hand in the ceasefire and like CNN, need to write the story without even hinting at giving any credit to Trump.

    1. There is NO doubt, our news media is ‘personal agenda driven.’ There’s always been some of that but this is way out of hand . . . and dangerous. It is no longer possible to have confidence in any corporate new agencies. Read it, hear it, if you must, but don’t automatically assume it’s legitimate.

    2. The news I watch is accurate on Trump they show him saying exactly what he says.

    3. ABCNews is a little more neutral and objective. Thanks for the laugh. This made me chuckle. They fell for a pee pee tape

    4. When News of the Ceasefire broke, "the long face" of CNN anchor Erin Burnett, says it all- Google it its classic TDS!

  9. You should'a waited a bit before posting about any happy ending. Ain't been one between Iran (Persia) and Israel for millenia. And it doesn't look like this one took. Imagine that. The Orange Buffoon declaring in ALL CAPS something that doesn't happen. Maybe in "two weeks" it will. #UntruthSocial

  10. Ceasefires usually get off to a rough start. If it fails, that's on the countries who fail to adhere to them. In any event, this is a much better outcome than I had anticipated.

    1. Outcome? Bernie, the guy says whatever makes him look good! He wants a Nobel prize! Two warring factions for over 100 years and he calls Netnyahoo and claims he will stop? Cmon..Iran and Israel both enjoy infinite hatred, and no wannabe king, anointed one, or whatever will bring them together for whatever you think is an outcome.

    2. You seem to actually hope that the ceasefire fails just to make Trump look bad. I don't like the guy, would never vote for him and disagree with just about everything he does and says. But he got this one right. .

    3. This is why you’re better than most on the left. I was not a fan of Obama but applauded his decision to get Bin Laden. Biden was against it. We went into another sovereign nation with a military operation. It was risky and a gutsy call. The hatred these people have for Trump, they root against the country hoping it will hurt Trump. No matter what he does or proposes they’re against it.

    4. He says whatever makes him look good? LOL yes he’s a politician there Einstein. SMH.

    5. Respectfully, totally disagree…
The danger , weapon of mass destruction was created for Netnyahoo and Trump to go in an use U.S. bombers and missiles to crush Iran…it didn’t work..then Trump exaggerated about obliterating the Iranian program..a lie and he knew it…then Real U.S. Military Assessment reveals the bombings did NOT obliterate…Donny gets angry, because he was outed and uses expletives to describe both Iran and Iraq….
The so called ceasefire will never hold, they are still lobing bombs at each other..with no real ceasefire agreement …so Donny won’t get the Nobel Prize now. Then scheduled Congressional briefings are abruptly cancelled about the bombings…because it didn’t go the way Donny wanted it to…..and you still think this moron was right? He was played!

  11. We’ll see how this plays out. Trump nearly gave away the plans. Did anyone believe his “two weeks” speech? Still, I don’t believe Iran is to be trusted. Iran is fighting a religious war, with visions of heaven and the hereafter. It’s impossible to have a logical outcome when the focus is on glory in the afterlife.

  12. ... and it's off. Both sides have already violated Trump's "ceasefire". The Orange TACO FAILS again.

    2. You would rather have America fail if it makes Trump look bad. It’s a mental illness seek help. Right now the cease fire looks like it’s holding.

    3. Actually, many of the MAGAs were opposed to the decision to bomb Iran, from Tucker Carlson to Marjorie Taylor Greene. And there are many Dems who supported the decision, including me.

    4. It is sad how you and others would rather chaos and destruction to our country than admit President Trump may do some good. You wish for our country to fail just to make your point. That is pathetic and the rest of us sane proud Americans see right through your rhetoric

    5. Trump can do no good…only for himself and we will end up like his bankrupt businesses. Everything he touches he wants to turn into money or power for himself. WTFU ..He is a world class user.

  13. Do you trust anything this sophomoric autocrat tries to shove at all of us? We still are waiting for the Big Ugly budget to hit us, but let’s get distracted by the Trump/netyahoo reality ceasefire show. Texting and phoning each other, like immature adolescents while thousands are being killed. Oh, and we are at war with Iran , apparently, they have targeted 28 military bases.
Maybe trump will text Iran and bully them into submission. He’s a walking, illiterate, train wreck.

  15. The liberal media were screaming he’s starting world war three! Now all of a sudden it’s oh we didn’t destroy the nukes! The cease fire didn’t work! Next it will be on to the budget and how everybody is going to starve and the old people are going to be pushed off cliffs. These people hate Trump so much they are actually cheering for the country to fail. Sad!

    1. This is the part I’ll never understand. As far as I’m concerned, when an American President fails, we ALL fail in some way. This applies to all Presidents (R or D). Unless, of course, we encounter a President who actually works to bring down our country. We all know that would be very rare (wink, wink)!

    2. Yes, I hate Trump but because he always is promoting what he thinks , not what really is happening. He changes tactics, goes in reverse, and back peddles to the point of exhaustion trying to get you to believe anything he says. Yes, I hate him for not worrying about our country and ignoring rules and bullying people .

  17. Nope: he lied, exaggerated, and was outed by the REAL assessment by the U.S. Intelligence Agency …,the bombings did NOT, I repeat, NOT obliterate the Iranian nuclear program, it has been set back a few months, but not near the devastation propaganda put out by trump and friends….outed and shamed.
