"Northampton Four" To Face Court on Reduced Charges

Steve Lynch
Magisterial District Judge Jackie Taschner decided Friday that four Republican State Committee members (they call themselves the "Northampton Four") must face criminal court on charges of conspiracy to commit harassment as well as harassment at the June 8, 2023 meeting of the county Republican executive committee last summer. But she bounced six other disorderly conduct-related charges brought against this quartet. The surviving charges are third degree misdemeanors, which carry a maximum penalty of one year in jail and/or a fine up to $2500. Her ruling was made after a day of testimony at the Northampton County Courthouse.

Who are the Northampton Four? GOP State Committee members Steve Lynch, Debra Biro, Melanie Heilman and Richard Morea. They ran together for state committee as a slate and have been openly hostile with county party chair Glenn Geissinger at executive committee meetings. After the June 2023 meeting, they were banned from attending future meetings.

Interestingly, the charges were brought by party chair Glenn Geissinger as a private prosecution. They were approved by District Attorney Steve Baratta. Police declined prosecution, but they were considering other matters.

The hearing attracted quite the crowd. Most were there to support two opposing factions within the county party.

There's what I'd call the Q-Anon Lynch mob, which is a bit on the looney (and violent) side. Lynch, for example, threatened to bring 20 strong men to forcibly remove Northampton School Directors over, of all things, a face mask mandate designed to protect everyone. His followers like to talk about exercising their 2A rights against critics, and Lynch has a penchant for wanting to fight people who contradict him. He once reacted to criticism from me by challenging me to a boxing match, as though a trial by combat would resolve a difference between opposing ideologies.

On the other side are the tea party Republicans, who are a bit less virulent than the Lynch mob but can be just as cRaZy. They had been trying to take over the county Republican party for many years before finally succeeding two years ago. Some of their confrontations before finally taking over were at wild county meetings during which police had to be called

There was a third faction led by Gloria Lee Snover, which at one time was a bit more mainstream Republican and was outraged by the fanaticism of both the Lynch mob and tea party. Most of them have drifted into the embrace of the Lynch mob, at least temporarily.

All are MAGAs as the Republican party has grown more polarized. Take Beverly Hernandez, for example. At one time was a decent worker bee for the party. She had conservative values but could work within the League of Women Voters. She has been replaced by a Beverly Hernandez who just threatened a County Council with the curses of Leviticus and Old Testament fury.

There were also people like myself or Dem party boss Matt Munsey at this hearing. We were like rubber neckers at a car accident, perhaps experiencing a bit too much schadenfreude at seeing county Republicans in such obvious disarray. One of my readers contends Republicans are now more united than ever. The facts on the ground say otherwise.

I stayed for the first two witnesses, Glenn Geissinger and Andrew Azan, both of whom testified to what happened at the June 8 '23 meeting. That took up the entire morning. I did not return after lunch because it seemed clear that at least some of the charges would have to move forward, and frankly, I was tired from a long meeting the previous evening followed by too little rest. So, I'll give you my take on the first two witnesses.

Glenn Geissinger, the private complainant, was the top of the order for special prosecutor Robert Goldman, who has a strange penchant for holding one hand up in the air as he fires questions.

Goldman must have had second thoughts about taking on this case because Geissinger was a terrible witness. Glenn, a very nice person one-on-one, becomes very different in public or more formal settings. He could be pompous, arrogant and condescending when he was a member of County Council. Unfortunately, he was that way on the witness stand as well. I can't begin to tell you the number of times Judge Taschner had to direct him to answer questions, sometimes even when they were posed by his own lawyer. He also seemed a bit flippant with Judge Jackie, who takes no nonsense from anyone. She even once told a former Nazareth Police Chief to "Suck it up, cupcake!" when he complained about stickers calling for his termination.

Even if he had been a good witness, there were very few arrows in his quiver. He did establish that the meeting became raucous at times with interruptions from all four defendants. If that's criminal, then a very large percentage of citizens who attend and participate in local government could be rounded up and hauled off to the nearest gulag. He also testified that, as soon as the meeting had adjourned, Steve Lynch and Rick Morea came up to the table behind which he was standing and shoved an email in his face containing pictures of two executive committee members engaged in sex. They had apparently posted pictures and videos on the Porhub website, hoping to profit.

Lynch and Morea wanted the committee to take action against these members that very evening because it's not a good look for Republicans to be profiting on Pornhub for their sexual encounters.

The accused members denied involvement, but it was learned nearly a year later that the female member had, in fact, been lying. She posted the porn herself.

Geissinger had been sent an email earlier in the day apprising him of this discovery. But he was unaware of it at the time of the meeting. He was called a liar and the four defendants were demanding that he remove the accused members at that time, even though Geissinger tried to explain they had due process rights. Though Lynch and Morea were yelling just inches from Geissinger's face, there was no profanity or physical contact.

Andy the Clown
Andy Azan, the party's vice chair, was a much better witness. He's also known, incidentally, as Andy the Clown. He didn't wear his clown costume or anything like that to the preliminary hearing but was everything that Glenn was not. He was quiet, unassuming, listened to the judge carefully, and answered questions as they were asked. He had a sad look to his face, almost as if he was constipated.

Defense lawyer Andrew Teitelman absolutely destroyed Geissinger during his cross. But as my friend Ron Angle observed, Teitelman lost ground during his cross of Azan. He kept digging a hole for defendants Lynch and Morea. The longer he had Azan on the stand, the deeper that hole got.

Azan corroborated Geissinger's account of the meeting, including the assertion that defendants Lynch and Morea accosted him right after the meeting. Azan was standing next to Geissinger, and an elderly female Secretary was standing next to Azan. He was concerned about her safety as half of the Northampton Four bellowed in Geissinger's face. He described the scene as "very vocal, very belligerent." Geissinger was told, "You need to see this pornography right now." He added that Morea grabbed Geissinger's gavel and began pounding it until it broke. "They looked like they wanted to start a fight," he said.

Azan described "constant chatter" throughout the meeting, and said many members left, telling him, "I don't feel safe here."

Azan asked Lynch why he always tries to intimidate people. Lynch responded, "We can take it outside and you can throw the first punch."

Azan eventually did go outside, but not to fight Lynch. Apparently, there was an altercation between Brian McCulloch and another member that Andy the Clown broke up.

While testifying, Azan twice whispered to a female deputy standing in the well of the court that he'd like a drink of water. Both times, she acted as though what he was seeking was a major imposition. She was relieved shortly before noon and said, "This sucks!" to the person replacing her in a tone of voice loud enough to be heard from where I was seated. This is highly inappropriate behavior. Whether she likes it or not, she works for Azan. He does not work for her.

I failed to return for the afternoon session as my internal battery was near zero. But Tom Shortell of Lehigh Valley News has an excellent account. According to Shortell, at least one witness testified that Geissinger broke the gavel himself as he tried to restore order.

An audio tape of a portion of the meeting was introduced by Northampton Area School Director Brian McCulloch. It appears to me as though it corroborated the prosecution, not the defense.

Defense attorney Chris Shipman said the meeting was unruly, but no more so than many meetings of Congress or local municipalities. He characterized what happened as free speech. It can be ugly, but it's pretty basic to American democracy.

He's right. That's why I consider this a weak case. Perhaps the harassment count against Lynch should survive. He clearly was attempting by physical menace to put Azan in fear of bodily injury. Technically, he could even be charged with assault for this kind of toxic masculinity.

Judge Taschner maintained firm control of the courtroom. She explained at the onset that her role is quite limited. She does not determine guilt or innocence. Her sole function is to determine whether there's enough evidence to show that a crime occurred and that the Defendants were somehow involved. She is unable to engage in credibility determinations and must accept as true the evidence offered by the prosecution. Even with all these limitations, she dismissed six of the eight charges.

Defendants will be arraigned on September 5, 9 am, in Courtroom 1. That's when Taiba Sultana's daughter is also being arraigned for encouraging her minor siblings to deface campaign signs opposing her mother.

    1. He already chose not to run for re-election. That's why GOP GG and MF need to stop coming after the four. They had already decided they were done after their term ended but those two can't just let them leave, they have to destroy them in the process.

      Delete
    2. So you assert that these people should be allowed to create chaos and destruction for two years, culminating in the events of June 8, 2023 and then just be allowed to walk away with no consequences?

They haven't ceased their drama since June 8. Lynch continues to make inflammatory Facebook rants directed at Geissinger and others, used his status as a member of the state committee to file complaints about the county party (while at the same time complaining about the leadership of the state committee), and most recently have disavowed the entire republican party.

      Delete
    3. Lynch did not step away. Stepping away would including resigning from state committee, as he has 2 years left of a 4 year term. This also makes him a part of the county organization, whether he chooses to run for a county committee seat or not.

    4. So now the Northampton Four are the wounded parties? That would be laughable if it wasn’t so ludicrous. Someone already pointed out that they have two more years on their terms as PA State Committee persons. Resigning from those seats now would probably be the best thing for the party but will their egos allow it? Perhaps that decision will be taken away from them at some point.

    5. So Lynch should resign from his State committee seat because he did his job pointing out conduct unbecoming of a Republican committee person? Voters and candidates have the right to know who is representing them at the local level. Nothing private was revealed about the couple, only things that they themselves had made public. You can bet your a*s if Lynch had a PornHub site and they discovered it, he would be kicked off that committee so fast heads would spin. Everyone seems to have overlooked the fact that these two "pornstars" still sit on the executive committee of the NCRC. They are most likely part of the reason that Nancy Arroe lost. Panella used her connection to MF to point out what poor judgment she has for the company she keeps. The wife can't keep her business private and posts crazy rants on Facebook about all the horrible things he does to her and then takes it down an hour later. She's literally "divorcing him" every other week. The happy couple should do the party a favor and resign before they do more damage.

  2. If the Republicans would nominate a normal well-funded Canidate for Executive and good county Council candidates, they would win. McClure is propped up by labor money and has no real base of support. The guy has a repellant personality and rules like a thug. Brown was damaged goods, and Lynch was and is nutsy. McClure was lucky in both cases.

  8. Needs repeating...

What a complete clusterf*ck and case study of hypocrisy in Northampton County Republican politics. Two committee members post video of their "Unskinny Bop" online and other pearl- clutching committee members demand their resignation, positioning that it hurts their party. Oh, boo hoo; despite all the damage Lynch has already done to his beloved party. I'm verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves.

But then, the pearl clutchers get so heated and raucous that the Chairman breaks his gavel in order to attempt order and then files a criminal complaint against them. They then have the audacity to claim that it's "politically motivated". Yeah, up to this point, politics were not involved. 🤣

Meanwhile, back on the ranch, Trump admits to grabbing women by their p*ssy and Melania engaged in nude, Lesbian romps all over the Internet, but Lynch and his cohorts have no problem with this behavior.

Tell me again? Who's doing and saying what for political gain?

  9. Democrats in this country are in disarray. Their registration advantage is dwindling. Republicans can’t seem to get their shit together to take advantage of it because of the Trumpers. I will say this, if Trump loses again that will be three bad elections for the Trump folks, and it will be time to move on. As far as this Lynch guy, he’s hurting the party. He needs to go. Go lift some weights or something lol. Stay out of the politics.

  13. Mr. O'hare I'm really disappointed in you.

You did say the article would be part fact, part opinion but you have worded things that are not fact as if they are.

You report as if what GOP GG says is fact yet you yourself admit he can be pompous and condescending. An accurate description but how do you think that comes off when he is leading a meeting? Let me answer for you, it comes off passive aggressive and often hostile. Yet, if people respond to him the way he is acting they're at fault, they're aggressive and have "violent volume". Give me a break!

As for things Azan testified on, here are just two of his lies.
Azan did not break up the fight with McCulloch and his opponent, Steve Lynch did. You'll hear for yourself at trial. It's in the recording. Yes he did come out at one point, after Steve was already getting things to calm down.

Rich did not break the gavel. Period. Didn't happen, point blank, bold face lie. I was right there waiting for my turn to speak to Glenn.

I didn't even know half the people in that room but I do know what is truth and what is lies. GOP GG, Andy the Clown and MF have lied and exaggerated this entire time. I wait patiently for the day you have to report on that like you did about Margie's lie.

  14. 9:37, I reported accurately what I saw from the two witnesses I saw testify. Whether Geissinger or Azan are truthful is not for me to decide. You dispute their veracity but from behind a veil of anonymity. What you are really saying is that you are disappointed I did not call them liars.

I'm not saying you knew they lied. I know you can only attest to what you saw at the hearing since you were not there June 8, 2023.

Anonymity remains because you have not experienced the backlash of MF before, I have, and wish not to have to deal with him or his "wife" again.

Next time I pass you in the hallway of the courthouse, like I did Friday, I will make sure to introduce myself.

  15. I have to say I was looking forward to this article all weekend and this is a major disappointment. First of all, you started out with a glaring error. The four of them did not run as a slate for State committee. Lynch, Heilman, and Morea ran together but Biro ran on a slate with Lee Snover. Actually Andy the clown ran on the slate with Lynch but he lost handily. Also, the whole Q Anon thing is old and tired. And calling someone looney is no big deal but violent? You must have been referring to MF who is the only one who actually has a criminal record of violence. Also how can you comment that the audio appears to corroborate the prosecution when you were not there to hear it? The audio actually pointed out several lies that Geissinger and his merry band of fools testified to under oath. It did confirm that it was a heated political meeting, which is not a crime. There was no foul language or threats on the audio as the prosecution claimed. You say that Steve should be charged with assault for his toxic masculinity for putting Azan in fear of bodily injury but Azan made it a point to state multiple times that he was not intimidated by Lynch so your statement is inflammatory at best. This case is clearly two political factions who have disagreements and opposing viewpoints that do not get along. That is not a crime. As attorney Shipman said, this is a slippery slope. If loud political disagreements and heated discourse can get you hauled into court facing misdemeanor charges, that will be the end of our political system as we know it. The hearing showed one thing very clearly, the smug chairman Geisinger does not like to be questioned and has no problem throwing the local Republican party under the bus to grind an axe.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Did they install floor-to-ceiling mirrors in the courtroom for Lynch? Otherwise, I'd be worried he goes through withdrawal symptoms.

Also, he doesn't seem to cry about Melania Trump baring all in past photos/videos.

  37. I know you think highly of her Bernie but Lisa Tresslar has some explaining to do. She works in the appeals department at the DA's office but she is the very person who assigned these charges to the four. It appears she has a very personal relationship with the couple in the pornography as she was seen chatting it up and hugging them in the hallways outside the courtroom the day of the hearing. She and MF also worked very closely together in their campaign against Jennifer Sletvold in the past election cycle. Calling in favors? I sure do hope she didn't compromise herself by using her position of authority to help a friend. Something smells fishy

    ReplyDelete
  38. Actually, the ultimate decision on a private prosecution rests with the DA. Tresslar certainly knows the couple involved in the porn, but that was professionally, not personally. She is allowed to be cordial. The private prosecution here does not deal with this couple but the behavior of the four defendants at a GOP meeting. I have no knowledge of Lisa's involvement in any political campaign ever. You could certainly raise this as part of an omnibus pretrial motion, but you better have better evidence than her hugging someone.

    3. The county party not functioning is a direct result of incompetent leadership, not "disruptive" people. Who would we be as a society if we never questioned anything? To be clear, the disruption comes from the reaction to those raising calm questions, not the questioning itself. In this case, the audio played in the hearing confirms that.

    4. So by your own admission, your leadership is so inept that a "small minority" with disruptive behavior has prevented the party from functioning? Pathetic. Also, as chairman he has the process and ability to remove disruptive members both from meetings and from the committee. To say that prosecuting them was the only option is ridiculous. These four members have been completely absent from the committee and haven't attended any meetings or events as instructed since the June 8th meeting in question and yet the NCRC remains grossly ineffective. So what's your excuse now?

    5. When the 4 were banned, everything improved immediately. Ask the members, ask the candiddates.

    6. You realize the purpose of the organization is to get Republicans elected? So claiming things improved after they left would imply Republicans started to do better at the polls. In all reality Republicans have start to have even greater loses in our county. The NCRC is failing, so to claim things got better because Chairman Geissinger doesn't have ppl holding him accountable is a lie. The only difference now the officials who didn't blindly follow Geissinger have been silence by the legal system. Glenn really enjoys making himself look like a dictator.

  41. So Lynch should resign from his State committee seat because he did his job pointing out conduct unbecoming of a Republican committee person?"

No, he should resign bc he is a bully and toxic. A MDJ has determined he probably committed harassment as a misdemeanor, and part of the factual scenario involves him attempting to intimidate someone by inviting him to a fight. In my view, this crosses the line. He really needs to learn how to control himself. He looks like a child when he acts this way.

  42. The Northampton Four should do the right thing and resign from the state committee. This would give reason to drop the charges. If they chose not to so so be it; the process will continue. For those of us that have had to sit through these meeting with these four and their accolades there can be no greater form of relief then they will be on their own. No school board or council meeting would have tolerated their behavior, If GG has any fault here it is that these individuals were not removed after the Sept. 5 by-laws vote, which the fab four lost decisively. That the owner of the Farm and Table called the Nazareth Police to intervene is no small account. He feared for his establishment not to have damage. 14 were removed. All who were part of the NCRC out of those 14 should have been banned right there from attending anymore meetings. When you tolerate BLM you become BLM.

    1. You mean the meeting where Lynch never raised his voice, and never stood up from his seat except to cast his vote, and when asked to leave? Gotcha.

    2. And there it is. The actual reason for the charges.
Geisinger wants the 4 people who have been holding him accountable for his misdeeds off of state committee by any means necessary. If they resign charges will be dropped. If they do not, the process will continue. That doesn't sound like a chairman trying to do the right thing because a crime was committed. That sounds like blackmail to me. Geisinger should be considering dropping the charges because he and all of his cohorts perjured themselves and that's a felony.

    3. These people were elected by the voters in the entire county. This comment reeks of the true intention of Geissinger. I just didn't think anyone would be that stupid to be blatant about it, basically telling them to resign and it all disappears. It's looking like a motive is crystal clear. Geissinger was never harassed and he knows that. He's upset that there are people in this county that don't bow to him. What a slap in the face to the voter base who elected these people to remove them and appoint people they did not choose because he "knows what's best for them" or has some sick agenda regarding total control. The pride cometh before the fall.

    4. Actually when the cops arrived at the farm and table restaurant the only thing they found was a restaurant that allowed a grossly over capacity meeting to take place creating a fire hazard. Kudos to Geisinger for choosing an inappropriate venue yet again. No charges were filed. But I understand why you guys talk about that meeting constantly because you get to say the police were called.

    8. 4:35 I was there and the place was over capacity by at least 25 people.

  43. Did Glenn wear the full body Mormon underwear to court? Bet there was a skidmark in them. How that guy was in the military blows my mind. A loud farther and he would scurry away. And that is what the NCRC leadership has come to. Cornstarch and cowards

You couldn't be more wrong. It is not her job to provide water. That would be a job for a tip staff that Jermaine Greene or court administration needs to provide. Her job is to provide security. Deputies aren't there to call the next case, get the next witness or fill your water.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Actually, you couldn't be more wrong. MDJs have no tipstaffs. There were at least three or four deputies in that room, and when azan asked for water, this deputy could easily have asked a deputy to get some water if she was unable to leave her post and walk 10 feet. It is a matter of courtesy and actually is a matter of security. A witness can be very nervous and very close to having a medical episode. Deputies are trained to deal with those, and you certainly would not argue that deputies should let a person go into cardiac arrest bc their sole job is to provide security. That is nonsense. Moreover, there is no excuse for saying "This sucks" in a voice so audible that half the courtroom heard it. She should consider herself fortunate that Taschner did not. She only has to deal with my criticism instead of the discipline she deserves.

  47. And now after the hearing, Lynch has begun attacking the PA GOP on Twitter.

What's next Steve? Are you going to make an issue with the National party as well?

Some people exist only to whine and complain, all while doing little or no actual work to elect candidates.

  48. First of all it's no longer called twitter, those who cling to the pre Elon days are typically butt hurt libbies whose Jimmies are rustled by a burly stud like Lynch who takes no guff from country club establishment R's but instead blazes his own path through the political wilderness much like great Patriots of bygone eras ala Pat Buchanan, Lyndon LaRouche, and Ron Paul.

Brother Steve holding court on X is a beautiful thing wish he would post more on Truth Social but hes a busy guy and is already spread thin.
