I'm Falling Apart

A few weeks ago, I told you that I'm basically blind in my left eye as a result of cataracts. That issue will hopefully be addressed soon. But I'm still falling apart. A month ago, I suffered an injury to my shoulder while lifting. That has been slow to heal, but I was doing quite well with some stretches. Until yesterday.

A friend wanted me with her during an appointment she had with Palmer Police yesterday after her parked car was hit over the weekend. I told her there was nothing police could do, and I would be useless, but she insisted. So, I went. And because the weather was so nice, I rode my bike along a number of back roads that are always more hilly than they seem when you're driving.

I was right. There waws nothing police or I could do. After the interview had concluded, I started to get on my bike, which was right next to her car, where she made me move it. For some reason, I lost my balance and went over. I landed right on the very shoulder that was healing rather nicely. Now it isn't.

It could have been worse. I fell over right by her car. She did not notice and began backing up and missed running me over by about six inches. She never saw me laying there and just drove off. Eventually, I got up and rode home to an ice pack and Aleve.

Believe it or not, I still enjoyed the ride and look forward to Ironton Trail tonight, where I will try to beat my grandson

  1. Bernie, why don't you have the cataracts taken out? It is a simple procedure and you will love the results? C"mon man. Get with it.

  2. BernieOHare to 12:07, as I stated in my story, I am getting the cataracts taken care of. The soonest I could get in is May 2, and I hope the surgery is soon after that

  3. Sorry to hear about your mishap; hope you heal quickly. I do have a question- why can't the police check with neighbors for security cameras ? Maybe they captured the culprit in the act.

  6. See whoever RFK Jr uses for his anti aging regimen and substitute Stevia for sugar in your coffee/tea. Stevie when blended with water explodes into a white bubbly soup recognized as split h20 and has been proven to fight cancer and give tremendous clean energy

  9. As Rocky said in the movie Creed "Time is undefeated." Many of us are there with you and are glad the situation wasn't worse. It was nice you still went with her because when a friend needs help you help.

    You lift weights?
Maybe you should have that Lynch guy design a program for you

I lift once every three days but have stopped until my shoulder heals. Fitness requires a healthy diet, resistance training and cardio. I am primarily interested in endurance that helps with long rides. The stretching exercises I was doing were really helping and I expected to return to lifting in about a week, but this will delay thing a bit. The most important measure of fitness is VO2 max. Most lifters lack this most important measure. Can you do 50 push ups or dead hang for a minute? Another important measure of fitness is strength. Most endurance athletes lack this important measure.

I follow Dr Andy Galpin and Dr. Anthony Huberman for advice. Primarily Huberman.

The person who hit my friend's parked car did the right thing. She called police and they came. They all noted there was pre-existing damage to the car, which there was. That's why I told my friend there was nothing police could do. There is additional damage, but police are unable to quantify what damage was caused by the most recent accident. It was a waste of the officer's time.

  14. Like a rope rubbing against a rock, our shoulders, knees, and back are all destined to fail as time marches on. The most recent thing to go, after my 67 year old left shoulder, is the meniscus in my right knee. According to my doctor, your meniscus is like the cream in the middle of an Oreo. In my case, my cookies will soon be meeting each other. I can’t wait.

  15. Bernie, look into insulin resistance, monitor your diet for starches and sugars, from what I am learning, this condition has become very common in the Western world and can affect nearly every organ of the body, including the brain---which can lead to falling among other things. My late husband was in a terrible state of decline and we both suffered horribly for more than a year before he died in January. But neither of us knew what was going on inside that dear body until I started researching the literature after the funeral. And if you can go a step further, I would urge you to consult a homeopath. May God bless you and guide you to many more years of active life.

  17. 12:46, Thanks for the suggestions. For the past five years, my diet is low in starch and sugar. Of course, it was pretty high before that. I fall at least once every year on the bike. Sometimes it is more frequent, lol.

  23. Hey Bernie, I have a catarack in the garage. I only take it out on nice days.
Seriously Bernie, Your cataract surgery is not something you should put off. I had it done years ago and it's the best thing I ever did for myself. Don't suffer. Have it taken care of.

  24. Lol, I have not put it off. The soonest I can get in is May 2.

  25. Bernie-

I had cataract surgery and the next day I could see 20/20. You relax the day of surgery and the surgical center puts drops in your eye so you do not feel the procedure. Someone needs to drive you to and from surgery and for the next few days you do not ride your bike but let the surgery heal. You will ask yourself, "Why did I wait?" Also, please do not let that "friend" who almost drove over you drive you to surgery. You might not get there.
