Kerry Myers Elected NorCo Council President

Kerry Myers was elected President of Northampton County Council yesterday in the second round of balloting in a party-line vote. All five Democrats, including Myers, voted to install him as President. Three of County Council's four Republicans voted for John Cusick, who abstained from voting.

Myers was nominated by Ron Heckman, and seconded his own nomination.

In the first round, Myers only got four votes because Kevin Lott voted for Tara Zrinski.  He argued she was the high vote getter in the most recent at-large Council races and that she is the only second term Council member who never served as President of VP.

After the first round, Council Clerk Linda Zembo incorrectly advised that Myers had been elected with four votes. Under the County Home Rule Charter, all matters voted on require five votes.

After Myers had been elected President, Lori Vargo Heffner continued to run the meeting

Ron Heckman was elected VP in a second round of balloting with six votes after Republicans John Cusick, Tom Giovanni and John Goffredo cast their ballots for him. Democrats Ron Heckman, Kerry Myers, Lori Vargo Heffner also voted for Heckman. Kevin Lott and Tara Zrinski voted for Zrinski and John Brown voted for Cusick,

Myers' election as Council President is good news for me. For anyone interested in good government, it's a travesty.

  1. Saw the story on WFMZ app. Had to check it out. Your boy Authoritarian McClure almost screwed himself. His tampering with a council election almost got a republican elected president of council. The very republican he bases the most. His rubber stamps who do his bidding teamed up and split the democratic vote almost handing offices to the republicans. That would have been Funny. Neither Zirinski nor Lott will get a nod as council knows who they work for.

  2. Yes, for a blogger, Myers election is the gift that keeps on giving. But we voters that just tap the screen for any candidate that has the favored "D" or "R" deserve what we get. But didn't Myers foretell he had this in the bag? With all the nonsense coming out of Northampton County Council and reading about the nuttiness in Bethlehem government and in the three-ring circus of Allentown, I have no time to read a good book. We need to clone Bernie so he can make the rounds of more government entities.

  3. Democrats gonna Democrat. He told everyone he'd be council prez. He's council prez. Not sure why he needed someone else to run his meeting, though. Was he not ready for the position he's bragged for months of getting? BTW, you and everything are racist, and your words are violence. Get used to this charge.

  5. Bernie,

Maybe it is just me but it conveys low-class when you vote for yourself? He should have abstained.

He needs to vote for himself they have a 5 to 4 Majority and no one on the R side would ever vote for him, ever.

  7. He can legally vote for himself even though he benefits financially bc of something called the doctrine of necessity. If his vote is needed for the fifth vote, then he may vote for himself.

  8. Well, as a Lehigh County resident with a strong County Exec and Commissioners, theoretically I can sit here and chuckle. But what happens there affects us all.

Why do people do what they do? Who the hell knows....

  9. I'm not so sure that he gets the big picture. Gotta give him a chance I suppose

  10. My republican sources tell a slightly different story. They knew there was no way a democratic majority would elect a republican president. Heffner had become too emotional in her fights with McClure and let perceived power go to her head with those on council. The move by McClure to put Zirinski in charge backfired as no one has any confidence in her as a leader. So really that limited the field dramatically. The outside chance was a democrat like Heffner flipping for Cusick as she is in a war with just about every democrat. So, Myers got the nod. There was little anyone could have done. Heckman was not interested at this time.

  11. Just so Mr. Myers remembers that white lives matter also.

  12. Don't forget Zirinski is constantly running for state office so her concern for local government is suspect. As some have said she barely took office and was running for a better paying job, that didn't go over well. She is all about herself.

  13. I used to like Kerry Myers but some of his recent bloviating has really turned me off. He's just another asshole who likes to hear himself talk.
