Liz Cheney: A Time For Choosing

Team Trump has been trying its best to vilify Cassidy Hutchinson, one of the very few former White House staffer who's had the courage to say the Emperor is wearing no clothes. Sean Hannity called it rumors, "a ton of hearsay, and a lot of impeached testimony." Laura Ingraham called Hutchinson's testimony an "audition tape"for a job on The View. Mark meadows, through a "spokesperson," denies he ever sought a pardon. And lots of right-wingers know what the Secret Service agents will say, though they themselves have said nothing.  But there is one conservative Republican who stands behind Hutchinson. Her name is Liz Cheney. She delivered a powerful speech to the Reagan Foundation (you can see it above) Wednesday afternoon while right wing talking heads were rolling around onthe floor, frothing at the mouth. “Republicans cannot both be loyal to Donald Trump and loyal to the Constitution,” she said.

Here are some excerpts.

The domestic threat facing America

"[W]e are confronting a domestic threat that we have never faced before. And that is a former president who is attempting to unravel the foundations of our constitutional republic. And he is aided by Republican leaders and elected officials who made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man. Now, some in my party are embracing former President Trump. And even after all we’ve seen, they’re enabling his lies. Many others are urging that we not confront Donald Trump, that we look away. And that is certainly the easier path. One need only look at the threats that are facing the witnesses who’ve come before the January 6th Committee to understand the nature and the magnitude of that threat. But to argue that the threat posed by Donald Trump can be ignored, is to cast aside the responsibility that every citizen, every one of us bears to perpetuate the republic."

Trump Summoned the Mob

"He summoned a mob to Washington. He knew they were armed on January 6th. He knew they were angry. And he directed the violent mob to march on the Capitol in order to delay or prevent completely the counting of electoral votes. He attempted to go there with them. And when the violence was underway, he refused to take action to tell the rioters to leave. Instead, he incited further violence by tweeting that the Vice President Mike Pence was a coward. He said, “Mike deserves it.” And he didn’t want to do anything in response to the hang Mike Pence chance. It’s undeniable. It’s also painful for Republicans to accept."

On BiPartisanship

"I serve on the Armed Services Committee and I have differences, as I’ve said with most of the democratic members of that committee, but we also share much in common. Among my most competent, honorable, and serious colleagues, are a group of women veterans that I serve with on that committee. Women like Mikie Sherrill from New Jersey, Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Elaine Luria of Virginia, former DOD official Elissa Slotkin from Michigan.

"We debate issues. We have big disagreements. We don’t come out on the same side most of the time, but we respect each other. And I know that those women, those veterans love this country and they are on that committee. And they’re in Congress, because they want to serve the nation and do the right thing. And for 61 years, that tradition of unifying across party lines has meant that the Armed Services Committee and the House of Representatives, every year produces the National Defense Authorization Act in a bipartisan fashion, usually in a unanimous fashion, providing resources for the defense of the nation. And that is a model that we should follow for the rest of Congress and for the rest of this country. We need to debate and defend our beliefs. But we also have to work to build the future, where we remember that despite our differences, we are all Americans."

Younger People, Especially Women, Will Save This Country

"I have been incredibly moved by the young people that I have met, young people who approach me everywhere, at home in Wyoming, in Washington, DC, in airports all over the country. And I will tell you, it is especially the young women, young women who seem instinctively to understand the peril of this moment for our democracy, and young women who know that it will be up to them to save it. And I have been incredibly moved by the young women that I have met and that have come forward to testify in the January 6th Committee. Some of these are young women who worked on the Trump campaign, some worked in the Trump White House, some who worked in offices on Capitol Hill, all who knew immediately that what happened that day must never happen again."

The Courage of Cassidy Hutchinson

"America had the chance to meet one of these young women yesterday, Miss Cassidy Hutchinson. Her superiors, men many years older, a number of them are hiding behind executive privilege, anonymity, and intimidation, but her bravery and her patriotism yesterday were awesome to behold. Little girls all across this great nation are seeing what it really means to love this country and what it really means to be a patriot. And I want to speak to every young girl watching tonight. The power is yours and so is the responsibility. In our great nation, one individual can make all the difference and each individual must try. There are no bystanders in a constitutional republic. And let me also say this to the little girls and to the young women who are watching tonight, these days for the most part, men are running the world and it is really not going that well."

  2. It's amazing how a soviet era show trial, without any cross examination or rebuttal is jumped on by the left as all fact and an indictment of Trump. Are we to believe that the last 5 years of false allegations of Russian collusion, phony impeachments to protect the Biden family should now consider anything we hear as credible.
It seems the establishment both republican and democrat are way over the the top in their hoped for destruction of Trump.
They believe that if they can disgrace and disqualify Trump they can return to having presidential candidates picked by them, The direction of the country goes in the same direction no matter who is president.
Cheney represents the Bush/Cheney foreign policy of regime change and nation building a policy that if continued will lead to the destruction of this country.
Trump has changed America forever, whether you like it or not, whether he runs for president again or not.

  3. Perhaps some of that idiotic behavior by some of the protestors that day was encouraged by night after night of TV reports and newspaper accounts of the rioting and looting that was allowed to go on in the past in some our "finest" cities. Maybe if they had taken some of the TVs and other property that would have made their protest more legitimate. So, some of the politicians were afraid? Well, that's what innocent folks in the Democratic run cities live with everyday.

  4. Thank the Lord that you're no Sean Hannity. We can hang on every word you post, kinda like that bastion of Americana, Joe Scarborough. As a side note, he is also a failed attorney, and is a star on failed cable network show. On the bright side, at least Liz Cheney, your hero, hasn't shot anyone in the face yet like her dad.

Our job as Americans and as Republicans is to dislodge the traitors from every place where they've been sent to do their traitorous work.” - Joe McCarthy,Republican National Convention speech, 1952. Great American traditions. Salem Witch Trials, McCarthy and Congressional hearings. Hearsay will get you thrown out of Judge Judy’s Court. But, not in Congress. Trouble is hearsay avoids cross examination and violates the 6th Amendment. But, that is only a minor issue. Trump angered Cheney when he wanted to stop sacrificing American lives to bolster ineffective and corrupt Mid East governments. That was not allowed in the Dick Cheney playbook. When we find those weapons of mass destruction, we will probably find all those fraudulent ballots. Both nuts deserve nothing.

  10. Given the dire situation our nation faces now, discussing Liz Cheney is a big waste of effort. I realize her obsession with Trump, her constant attacks, matches the hatred of most who read here, but really? Her own state wants her gone. She is way behind in most polls, something like 35%, and is expected to be voted out in less than a month. Her future employment is probably similar to our own failed RINO, Charlie Dent, who now makes money as a liberal media stooge.

  18. Many of you anonymous commenters slamming Cheney think of yourselves as "patriots" or "we the people." But let me tell you that you are really fascists. Fascism is a cult of the leader promising national restoration in the face of the supposed humiliation by an enemy that could be immigrants, leftists, liberals, women, etc. These groups are accused of taking over media, institutions, schools, etc., and the only way that can be stopped is with toxic masculinity from der fuhrer. Authoritarianism does exist on the left wing as well in the form of totalitarianism, but what many of you on the right have become fascists.

It matters very little to me whether Cheney experiences a short-term loss in a congressional race. She is on the right side of history. You are not.

Over 120 federal judges appointed, 3 Supremes, best economy of all time until the pandemic, control over our southern border. On and on. Liz is a splattered bug on a windshield, nothing more. She will be soundly defeated in the primary despite millions of left-wing celebrity money propping up her campaign. The January 6 hearing is political theater. No one is watching it, and even less give a shit. Trump's successor is slowing ruining our country. Inflation is rampant. COL is destroying wage increases. And as far as FASCISM goes - the real fascists are the woke mob that harrass judges in their homes, have people fired for comments they made on Twitter years ago, who tear down statues, riot at will in Portland, etc. Those are LEFTISTS, not Republicans. Tell it like it is Bernardo, Not with your Trump Derangement Syndrome bias.

THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis shrink from the service of their country; but he who stands by it now, deserves the thanks of men and women.

  25. Cheney is a long time apologist for her war criminal father. That she is now a hero of the left, is rather convenient and telling. Nobody likes worms and turncoats, from Benedict Arnold to Arlen Specter to Liz Cheney. Hating turncoats is a great American tradition. Defending them is a new thing, though. You're not good at it. That's a compliment.

    ReplyDelete
  26. We got Trump because of Obama. We got Biden because of Trump. A Wisconsin Congressional district will get a new representative because of the Jan 6th “hearings.”

    ReplyDelete
  27. The thing is that what they are doing is a congressional hearing is not a trial. It does not follow the same rules as a trial. Criminal trials are for getting the facts out and proving beyond the shadow of the doubt. Civil trials are to show a preponderance of evidence. Congressional hearings are to to obtain information and opinions on proposed legislation, conduct an investigation, or evaluate/oversee the activities of a government department. This is definitely not a Trial by any means. Even though the show is the show it is doing exactly what it is supposed to like it or not!.

And the committee is doing for the most part what it is supposed to do. R's could have had some others on the committee but they chose publicly to try to make a mockery of it and also boycott it. But the reality is that it is run the way it is supposed to be. The search is for information. Ture, not true, fact or lie it is all information. It needs to be sifted through deeper with each conversation. Remember it is under oath though. That should have a certain amount of credence. And there have been individuals called who might have recounted certain aspects but they have taken the fifth, claimed can remember or other ways to avoid answering questions. As bad as that is it does make those willing to testify under oath that much more credible.

    ReplyDelete
  28. From the dictionary to continue a previous post.

  33. Her section, Trump “Summoned the Mob”is actually absurd. She leaves out Trump’s actual words to the enormous crowd imploring those who are going over to the capital to do so peacefully.

She claims Trump knew there were guns at the event. I don’t know how he could have known that in advance of the hundreds of thousands present when the Secret Service whose job is to guard him apparently didn’t know. She said he attempted to prevent the counting of the Electoral Votes. No, he wanted Pence to call for a delay to confirm the validity of certain state reported ballot counts. There’s a process for doing just that. She condemns Trump for not telling the unruly part of the crowd to stop. How exactly would he have done that and not be condemned for making the trip over there? With a megaphone? Security of the capital was the responsibility of Nancy Pelosi.

Then, the real whoppers told by the key witness she praises so highly. Where to begin on that?

  34. "So now, you label people who disagree with Cheney as fascists. A new low for even you."

Um, I disagree with Liz Cheney on many things. The label fascist applies to those Trump apologists who embrace his nationalist "America First" policies after we have supposedly been humiliated by NATO, immigrants, leftists, liberals, media, the deep state, women, etc. That is precisely what you are.

  35. Her section, Trump “Summoned the Mob”is actually absurd. "

You either have failed to watch the hearings or are incredibly stupid. There has been clear evidence, over and over, that Trump (1) summoned the mob; (2) knew they were armed but did not care bc they were not there to hurt him (3) wanted Pence to refuse to certify and send the matter back to the states; not only let the violence go on for hours, but said "Mike deserves it" when told that Pence was in danger.

  43. There are lots of reasons to love Liz Cheney. But her staunch pro-life, anti-abortion stance is the best one. She is certainly her father's daughter and he was similarly horrified by abortion and thought any "choice" to commit premeditated murder was intrinsically evil. Liz never wavers in protecting innocent life, especially those of minority babies whom Democrats seem obsessed with slaughtering before they get born and uppity. Liz Cheney is an American hero, just like her father, both tireless fighters in the battle to destroy Roe. This is a week to celebrate one of the first families of the pro-life movement. God bless them and damn their political opponents.

"I have always been strongly pro-life. Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court returns power to the states and the people of the states to address the issue of abortion under state law."

Hey, buddy. Calling us fascists raises an interesting point. During normal times, I'm cool with the gay married couples defending their mj crop with AR-15s, but when we're being driven into the ground economically, you're telling people they're racist just because they're white (and you yourself have said this), and children should be encouraged to choose their own gender adventure, yeah, I'm going to vote for someone between Pinochet & Franco to make it stop. DJT isn't that. Neither is DeSantis (whom I prefer over Trump because of age and political savvy), but that person will emerge. We're heading towards an election where both major party nominees will promise to put supporters of the other into camps if they win. No, it won't happen in 2024 or 2028, but it WILL happen. You're contributing to that trend. Be better than that.

Oh, and Liz isn't on the right side of history. She's a corporatist war monger who wants the US to bomb more brown people. Just like her dad, who I'm ashamed to say I supported once upon a time.

You are correct. TRUMP HAS RUINED THIS COUNTRY. Aided by assholes like you! By far the worse
President to ever hold the office of President. The top 5 worse presidents(Trump, Reagan, Nixon, Buchanan, Jackson)

  65. "How do you explain the steering wheel discrepancy?"

Did I miss either of the people who were in the vehicle besides Trump actually go on the record contradicting her? And that's not to say that they did so under oath.

I know you believe that if you can catch Ms. Hutchinson in a discrepancy then you've rebutted the whole thing. Good luck with that.

trump was in a chevy Suberban not a limo.
Reaching the driver is very easy.
    But that means nothing.
The important point is trump wanted to show up at the Congress and use his thugs to overturn an election.
Clearly the maga folks and trump do not accept the rule of law.

  67. I have been gainfully employed for over 25 years. My worst year of wages and job uncertainty were Trumps last 6 months and Bidens first 6 months. My best year of wages and job security were the last 12 under Biden. My worst raise was under trump. My best wage increase was under Biden.

I prefer to rely on statements from Republicans who testify under oath and not on parlor talk.

  68. Poles have been created to modify the thoughts of the weak of mind. There are no blind poles there are no poles that are completely unbiased. There are no poles which are truly cross sectional. Although the actual results of the poles may be true in concept the underpinning of them is substantially flawed. And when you can reach back to the core of who is doing the asking and who they ask there is substantial bull in it which are the basis of who you ask to get the answer you want. Kind of like the algorithms in google searches.

Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. If you attack someone personally, I expect you to identify yourself. I will delete criticisms of my comment policy, vulgarities, cut-and-paste jobs from other sources and any suggestion of violence towards anyone. I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics.
