Lincoln's Prophetic Warning About January 6

Yesterday, the House Select Committee conducted its seventh hearing in its investigation of the January 6 attempted coup at the US Capitol. It included excerpts of former White House Counsel's Pat Cipollone's testimony about a heated December meeting in the White House in which he and others took on the Trump Insane Caucus. They were recommending that he seize voting machines and appoint Sidney "Release the Kraken" Powell as some sort of special counsel to investigate nonexistent election fraud. That never happened, but the very next day, Trump issued his now infamous "will be wild" tweet calling on the mob to descend on the capitol on January 6. There was also evidence that some Trump insiders, including Steve Bannon and General Michael Flynn, knew he was going to call on the crowd to march on Congress. Finally, there was evidence from Liz that Trump himself recently tried to contact a witness who is on tap. Legally, it is becoming more and  more likely that there will be a criminal referral. Politically, these hearings have been death by a thousand cuts for Trump. If polls are to be believed, half of GOP voters have finally awakened from the mass hypnosis and are ready to dump him.

These hearings, as Congressman Jamie Raskin observed, make Watergate look like a cub scout exercise. They have grown increasingly more and more intense and damaging to the Cult of the Leader. I was especially drawn by Florida Congressman Stephanie Murphy. She's no socialist. A blue dog Democrat, she is a Vietnamese refugee who fled from a violent Communist overthrow. On January 6, she was forced to flee again.

Congressman Jamie Raskin's is perhaps the most eloquent member of this Committee. Yesterday, he pointed out that what had happened was exactly what Abraham Lincoln warned us about way back in 1838,  when he was just 28 years old. In his first major speech (the Lyceum Address), Lincoln spoke out against a mob that had a few weeks before chained a black man to a tree, set him on fire and then watched him die. Only one hour before, he had received his freedom.

Lincoln, very much like Socrates, warned that the greatest threat to democracy lies within. "If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

Lincoln later added, "There is no grievance that is a fit object of redress by mob law. In any case that arises, . . ., one of two positions is necessarily true; that is, the thing is right within itself, and therefore deserves the protection of all law and all good citizens; or, it is wrong, and therefore proper to be prohibited by legal enactments; and in neither case, is the interposition of mob law, either necessary, justifiable, or excusable."

  1. You are right, the danger is within, within the FBI, The DOJ, the state Department, the education establishment and all the rest who desire to transform america into a socialist utopia. While some are just naive followers most all are living off the government tit.

  2. "You can fool some of the people ....."

Our current administration says men can get pregnant and to say otherwise is violence. I hate Trump for January 6. But I'd vote for him this morning if he was the way out of the current madness. Seriously, if I say men can't get pregnant I've committed violence? Shit, I'm practically a mass murderer. And so are almost all of you. Lincoln saw Democrats for what they were. He was right then and still is now.

  3. Talking about a coup, the real coup attempt was the false russian hoax, of course that is ok, because it was focused against the political opposition. Hypocrisy has no bounds.

  4. Your quotes from Lincoln perfectly describe the liberal fascist mobs that have been burning cities, defacing buildings, ransacking and looting businesses, assaulting police officers, and defaming those for whom they disagree for years now. And you can throw in the current harassment and stalking of Supreme Court justices for good measure.

It’s a shame that for one day in one city, Conservatives sunk to the same level that liberal fascists have been operating in for years and years, across the country.

2000 police officers injured in BLM riots, but quote Lincoln about mob violence to admonish conservatives.

The sh#t being shoveled on this forum gets deeper and stinkier every day.

  8. This January 6 matter is being blown way out of proportion. For most Americans, I think, these outrageous and unsubstantiated claims are “going in one ear and out the other.” The whole thing is so predictable and phony according to the chatter I hear daily.
I just don’t see Trump losing his appeal.

  9. The whole lot of our politicians are responsible for the demise of this once great nation. Look at us. Red versus Blue. We demonize anyone who has an ounce of success. We cater to the fringe making their voice more important than the majority. Our nation is built on blue-collar dems and repubs who work side-by-side for their families and neighbors.
Instead, we're reminded by a blogger of BS artists who sit on a committee, ignoring their 4 years of lies against an ego-maniac who could never handle criticism. What did they expect? They are all responsible for this mess. They knew exactly what the outcome would be.
Throw them all out and lets get back to being Americans.

  12. Thanks for sharing Lincoln’s wise words. It’s a good reminder that we are not governed by the mob. Trump is a mobster, he always was. Whenever he said, “well a lot of people are saying…” he tried to move responsibility for the lie on to the mob, as if that made the lie (whatever lie it was at the time) justifiable. He plays the mob and the mob is still sending him their hard earned dollars.

  13. In thinking of what could improve this nation, I keep thinking we could use a leader who doesn't cow-tow to a political party establishment. One who doesn't give a rip about Repub or Dem "ideals". One who could get things done for the American public, without taking money from interest groups who are out for profits at the expense of our tax dollars.
As much as I hated his way of getting things done, one former President was pretty close to the above description.
We could use a leader like that to rise up through the crap show we are in currently.

  14. Most of your responders so far this morning are the reason this country has a long way to go to heal. FOX is their biggest source of information and they know how to parrot it well. Hopefully, after we have a string of presidents who conduct themselves like civilzed humans with proper decorum and have actual knowledge of how government works and how to make policy, we will put these fact-free Trump lovers back in their holes where they were before. You know, back when there were things you just didn't say out of common decency. It all starts at the top, and under Trump decency was thrown to the wind.

  15. People like Kayleigh McEnany, Ivanka Trump, and Bill Barr have all given statements under oath. Pretty damning, and yet... the Trumpers march forward, blindly... unwilling to admit how disgraceful the entire J6 event was. The fact that it was openly promoted as a "Stop The Steal" rally (zero evidence of mass fraud) shows how blind his followers are.

There are some good thoughtful points made by some, but they are in the minority. It's a great country, but it is ours to lose. History will certainly be repeated. I never thought I would see it in my lifetime.

We need someone to stand up to China. Lead the world towards freedom and independence. Settle differences with N. Korea and other third world countries. Enough with the gender identity bologna, the open border from Mexico and all the race baiting. Let's get things done that will help ALL AMERICANS. 28. Now that the good ship Trump is taking on water many of the stooges that licked his boots are now jumping ship. Almost all of the people giving sworn testimony against Trump were Trump sidekicks. And when Trump was elected to the Whitehouse both the local Tea Party and the Chamber of Commerce stated their glee. I wonder how they feel now.

  31. I can't comprehend what I am reading on this Blog. No person in his right mind can believe some of these things they are saying. People are testifying under oath in front of Congress. They were fanatical Trump supporters that finally saw this man for what he is. They knew him best. What they are describing is a POOR EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING. You know what's worse than these people writing these crazy things on your Blog? It's the Republicans in Congress who are still carrying this man's lies to their constituents back home.

  33. The comments are crazy. But their not from the crazies who actually shot a congressman and plotted to assassinate Brett Kavanaugh. Crazy comes in different flavors. The crazy comments here pale in comparison to actual violence that has been defended here. There's a reason Bernie doesn't publish his address or any of the politicians he flaks for. The left would seek them out and commit violence, as they have done repeatedly to express their political beliefs. The right mouths off. The left hurts and kills people. Then, Bernie hurries to defend their actions. Bernie, publish the addresses of two politicians: one from each extreme. See who dies. I think we know the answer.

  34. Were we ever really a great nation or do we just think we were? I suppose if you were a white male, it was pretty great. But if you were of a different color or gender, not so much, really. We long for a nostalgic past that never existed for everyone. Established by white misogynist slave owners, I suppose we had a pretty good run. But like most all democracies, ours too is coming to an end.

Second, since the witness lists are secret, how would Trump know that person was on the witness list? To be guilty of witness tampering, doesn't the accused have to know that the person they are trying to contact is a witness?

  41. 7:18 I follow your logic. I have been to numerous countries across the globe and have run into many people ow varying nationalities that think Americans are vial egotistic idiots not smart enough to see what is going on in front of them in their own country. A culture of idol followers and materialistic fools who destroy themselves and anyone around them or around the globe to just be able to say they have another thing, a bigger house, or they met someone who would not recognize them even if they had a name tag on. Over the past 20 plus years the country has gone from a great place to a place to come grab money and things and take them back home. A place where wrong is right and right will get destroyed.

The best description I heard is America is the place of people with delusions and many have mental instability.
People that think they are rich although they only have things and nothing else. A place where honor and ethics have been marginalized and the young are being taught it is good to be bad, cheat, and steal. A place where the youth feel like there is no hope and are actually looking to go abroad to find a better place. A place where the villain's are in charge and there is no super hero showing up to save the day. A place where wealth an connections mean everything.

First, the call did not go through only bc the witness refused to accept it. Second, I am very certain that Trump knows what witnesses are testifying be he or his allies have already contacted several of them. And no, it is not secret.

Witness tampering requires proof of threats, intimidation or corrupt influence. A phone call, by itself, is not witness tampering. It becomes that if Trump tries to influence them corruptly. I believe Cheney is making very clear that shge wants Trump to stay away from the committee's witnesses and refuses to puit up with the kind of horseshit he regularly employs.

Lincoln was right, we will tear ourselves apart from within. I use sarcasm to shed light on the dolts that have infected the Republican party. You resort to threats of physical harm on people you don't agree with (your kick your teeth in response)
I'm not looking for your approval. I'm quite alright with who I am.

  44. Bernie @ 9:49 - First, as a matter of law, does it matter why a call wasn’t completed in proving a case of witness tampering? Or does the fact that no contact was ever made make the case moot?

Second, I was unaware that you were certain of what Trump knew and that the purpose of his call was, without a doubt, an attempt at witness tampering. Your intimate knowledge makes all the difference.

Did Trump try to influence this witness corruptly by not speaking to him? And is the intention of the call, known only to you, regularly employed Trump horseshit?

You make a lot of assumptions.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I did not say that, as a matter of law, the fact that the call was not completed is conclusive proof that there was no witness tampering. What I said is that witness tampering requires proof of a threat, intimidation or corrupt influence. By itself, the call shows none of these things. If there is other evidence that Trump made the call with the intention of intimidating or corruptly influencing the witness, then it could be the basis of a charge. I think the likelihood of such an eventuality is rather remote, don't you?

I also never said I am certain what Trump knew or what the purpose of his call was. What I did say is that I am certain Trump knows what witnesses are testifying. Contrary to you assertion, they are not secret. Also, his minions have already made contacts.

The only person making assumptions is you.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Odds on trump claiming he "barely knew" the person he called? That's horseshit.
