Thode: Covid Cases Up, But Deaths Down

Steve Thode has been keeping track of the Covid statistics for us, and this is his latest report.

Cases have increased significantly over the past two months. Between May and June 30, DoH reported 61,066 new cases. Between July 1 and August 31, DoH has reported 88,297 new cases.  That's an increase of about 45%.

How about deaths?

For those Pennsylvanians not in Long-Term Care Facilities, between May and June 30, DoH reported 1,219 new deaths. Between July 1 and August 31, DoH has reported 351 new deaths among those not in LTCFs. That's a decrease of about 71%.

Note well: this is after adjusting for DoH's sudden discovery of an additional 399 LTCF deaths last year.

I suspect the reason cases are up but deaths are down is because the largest group of unvaccinated people are the young. This makes them more likely to contract the virus. But as we know, Covid is thankfully less lethal in younger people.

  1. Actually, COVID isn't very lethal for anyone but the elderly and those with multiple comorbidities.

As the latest CDC data (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm) clearly show, the average COVID death is accompanied by four comorbidities and exceeds the U.S. life expectancy.

This is further confirmed by the fact that there is a cumulative total of 130K deaths out of the 270,000,000 under-65 demographic for a 99.96% chance of *not* dying of COVID. The same dataset shows well under 400 deaths for the juvenile demographic of 75,000,000.

As anyone educated in statistics will tell you, "Cases!!!!!" is a metric that barely correlates to actual morbidity and mortality. This is because "Cases!!!" includes false positives, asymptomatic positives, bouts of the sniffles, a few days of minor flu-like symptoms, etc, etc. As such, it is a metric used more to inflame than inform and to rouse the rabble of ignorant, scientifically illiterate COVID fetishists.

According to the coroner, Lehigh County has 6 deaths so far this month and had 5 last month. I leave it to others to check on their own counties.

In addition to well-founded skepticism about "Cases!!!!" one wonders where this "Delta Spike!!!" is hiding. Can anyone find the little rascal?

    1. I’m so tired of this stupid argument. 700k Americans have died from covid since last year. Many were elderly but their lives don’t matter in your statistics they’re old anyway, so it’s okay, because POLITICS rule!

ONE MILLION will die from this deserve by years end but let’s focus on how many young and healthy have “survived” it, and also, I won’t include long haul effects in my presentation.

Do you see how ridiculous you sound making this argument?

GROW UP and show some compassion for your fellow Americans, not just the ones you include in your statistics.

  2. @ 1051

It is our Governmental Leaders that are making COVID a political issue. they are using it as a biological and psychological warfare. They want people living in fear as they know people tend to abandon, logic and critical thinking when operating out of fear.

0159 is providing a very practical explanation and is done with compassion.

    1. Stop.

Starting your post by saying “Covid is it as lethal” disqualifies you as a person with legitimacy knowing the covid was the third leading cause of death in 2020, and possibly also 2021. People with “sniffles” or “flu-like symptoms” DO NOT get categorized into the data. You have to have a positive result either from the antigen or PCR test.

And like I said in my last post, he’s not accounting for the REAL and debilitating long haul effects that hundreds of thousands experience some after recovering from covid because, you guessed it, it doesn’t fit the narrative.

Making light of the Delta variant that has decimated ICUs, specifically along the mostly unvaccinated Bible Belt just proves to me that this person has little regard to telling you the true severity of the matter.

Like I said, he’s not giving us anything practical, just your typical right-wing lump of disinformation.

still playing the mayor in Jaws?
Only a couple of people got eaten so ignore the shark--after all 99.96 of the swimmers did not get a scratch.
but forget morality try looking at cost.
All those deaths of older people-those numbers you never mention. Those deaths cost how much money? all those ICU days etc. That is just free?
    Versus a cheap vaccine?
As to "cases" one can add all the folks on ventilators who manage to live(kindly add those numbers here )--again at what cost?
Cherry picking numbers and slanting stats is quite obvious to folks that study statistics.
Sorry your logic does not add up to a reasonable argument.

" .Governmental Leaders that are making COVID a political issue. they are using it as a biological and psychological warfare"
And which Governmental leader is suggesting a horse dewormer as a solution to the pandemic?
Must of missed that press conference.

  5. Information regarding hospitalizations is NOT anecdotal but is based on data supplied by hospitals to health agencies. I refuse to publish disinformation from an anonymous and false statistician
