Gnanitz grew up in Allentown and is a graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School. Hehas been a police officer since 2001. He has degrees from St. Joseph's University and the University of Cincinnati.
Ganitz has been Chief since September 2019, and is well-respected both inside and outside the department
My information comes from sources inside City Hall. I have not spoken to Chief Granitz personally.
I wish him well in West Reading.
Fuck The Police Allentown would prefer a social worker over a police chief to oversee the remainder of the city's violent decline. Solid police leaders won't come near Allentown. When they accidentally do, they quickly plot their escape. Allentown has lost one of these. It will only find another by accident, and only for a little while, again.
ReplyDeleteIt was only a matter of time. He has a long life ahead of him, already proven himself MORE than capable of doing the job, etc. Allentown’s policing troubles will only increase going forward. West Reading is a wonderful community with far less daily stress. Great neighborhoods, clean, and respectful. All the best to his family, too!
ReplyDeleteHuge loss for Allentown, Chief Granitz was the reason Allentown didn't explode last summer. Ray, please look internally or locally for his replacement.
ReplyDeleteAnd Captain Kaiser is also leaving the city for a job in Northern Berks
ReplyDeleteBeautiful West Reading is our one-thirtieth the size of Allentown and is sandwiched between the Schuylkill River on the east and prosperous, pleasant Wyomissing on the west. There might be a touch of Shillington to the south. No matter. Its main commercial corridor, Penn Avenue, has enjoyed a commercial renaissance in the past twenty years and has great restaurants, a brewery or two, and a mom-and-pop drugstore. With Tower Health’s flagship, Reading Hospital, as its largest employer, there’s a lot of traffic in and out of the borough daily.
ReplyDeleteI can’t imagine a nicer borough in which to round out a career.
I though Chief Granitz would stick around awhile. With a new Mayor who knows what will happen
ReplyDeleteShocking! Chief Granitz is a home grown product, well respected in the community. Sad to see him go, especially to a rinky-dink police force in West Reading. Could the pressure have been that bad? He seemed to have thick skin, and a love for Allentown. Makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteMakes no sense? For who? You? He looks young. I'm sure he has his own reasons for leaving. He grew up, lives and works right in the same very city. Maybe it is time for him. Does not mean he has no love for the city.
DeleteHe's a very fine man. It's definitely our loss.
ReplyDeleteCan't blame him, though, and wish him a long and successful tenure in his new command...
Allentown is losing a good person and it is clearly not fixed. Tuerk inherits a mess, but provides little hope. Nat Hyman said it well, as posted here a few months ago:
ReplyDelete"Matt Tuerk, whose only experience has been working for The Allentown Economic Development Council, and we see how well he did at that, also has absolutely no business, management or leadership experience."
The hope is that Chief Granitz only applied for the job as a backup plan in case the elections went bad for the future of the Allentown Police. Hopefully, he will withdraw his name from West Reading and stay for a few more years. The news reports only say that he was offered the job, not that he accepted it.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who would want to live or work in Allentown is a fool. It is a complete and utter mess. Congrats to Glenn, he deserves better and is finally going to be rewarded for all the good work he has done.
ReplyDelete8:16 Ray is out--he did enough for the city he loves so much

ReplyDeleteYou sure have a lot of nerve denigrating my home town that I live in and love. Why do you need to be so angry, judgmental negative and pessimistic? You have northing better to do than insult 110,000 people today? Maybe your idea of "a complete and utter mess" is based in racial or ethnic intolerance? Some people might be inclined to call your community a complete and utter mess.
No doubt about it - Allentown has gone to the dogs.

ReplyDeleteWhat a profound statement...We are all so glad you could contribute such an intelligent comment. When negative people post here with ignorant statements, you have the following impact:
1. The Blog reputation suffers as the Patrick Palmers, Ed Pawlowskis and Thomas/Kathy Harringtons of the world can say "see its just a few ignorant racists that read that blog"
2. You cause the Blogger to need to evaluate allowing anonymous postings, many of which are made in an intelligent and constructive manner and add much to the dialogue.
Why not read along and if you have something ignorant to say, say it to yourself.
