Covid-19 Has Killed 31 at Gracedale

Northampton County is reporting that, as of May 4, 135 Gracedale residents have tested positive for Covid-19. Thirty-one of them have died, which amounts to a 23% death rate! Out of the 700 employees which work at Gracedale, 38 have tested positive for the Coronavirus. Seventeen have finished their quarantine periods and are back at work.

Gracedale is the largest nursing home under one roof in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. There are approximately 600 residents living (and dying) there. The Pa.. National Guard is assisting in the care of non-Covid rewsidents.

  1. These numbers are very sad to hear. Many people do go to nursing homes as a final destination, so deaths are probably a daily occurrence at a facility that large. It would be helpful to understand the magnitude of the current problem by comparing the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 against the usual number of deaths over the same duration from every other morbidity, or for just being old and weak.

You can't do that, nor can you list all the mitigating circumstances beyond Covid-19 that lead to nursing home care to begin with, it spoils the narrative.

But as far as the reporting goes, Covid-19 has seemingly and miraculously cured the opioid crises, doesn't seem like anyone dies of anything else anymore.

The next fear porn queued-up is an Asian Wasps threat, complete with close-ups pictures making them look like little killer drones, just when everything is beginning to open up and folks are going outside.

  4. On two floors of Gracedale separated by 4 floors , (if I remember) have resident patients that can not leave there own floor because they are incapable to wonder about. They don’t have the luxury of open space because of their already grave physical or mental conditions. These folks are incarcerated in effect because they need personal individual attention for daily personal hygiene and basic feeding which is a task. There isn’t enough of anything that could fix it . They are there because any known relative is unable to care for them for various reasons. Gracedale is a public institution and I won’t go into the prior political bad mitten that has occurred in past. So- yes the percentage is high, just like when the life boat sank after the ship you were on -sank. Bless them . Report cards on Governor’s lockdown stay at home requirements shorty. Murphy,Wolf,Northam and Evers, get an “F” .

  5. Waiting for our local "free press" to investigate why nursing homes account for 67.4% of all COVID deaths in PA. Guessing it will be a long wait. COVID has clearly illustrated how impotent our local (supposedly free) press has become.

The "free press" is dead in Pennsylvania. Add them to the COVID death count.

  6. I would imagine that in a nursing home as large as Gracedale, 3-4 patients die each day of natural causes. Add in the common flu and other airborne illnesses that amount could spike to 6-8 a day during flu season. So is 31 deaths in nearly 2 months of covid that startling?

  7. Sorry for off-topic a bit, but a while back there was a discussion about that Imperial College study that extolled social distancing.

It seems the main author is suffering a bit of a "for thee but not for me" moment.

I wonder how many "concerned" commenters here might fall into the same category. Well, maybe not EXACTLY the same behavior...

We need to manufacture stuff that are vital Evan if subsidized . The line need to be established. Americans should not ever depend on other countries for support. Ever again.

  10. FYI - when the Purple Heart military group , (I was there but not a member or wounded) meaning combat wounded was at Our county home to give out checks of support -well before the virus, Two people had passed away in the building that were to receive a check , and less than 2% of the living in this county ever served and most were never in combat and less were wounded.

  11. I also suspect that the bills to the federal government under CV are paid at higher rate than regular deaths. So they’re going to be nationally higher count with this issue without autopsy.

  12. Did the residents die at Gracedale or in a hospital?

  13. I am unable to answer that question but believe many passed away at the home. I will ask.
