Lisa Scheller Expands LCCC Scholarship Program

I got to know Lisa Scheller during her days as a Lehigh County Comm'r. I was pretty rough on her because that's the way I roll, and after all, she is an evil Republican. She never seemed bothered by my diatribes. She always answered my emails. I was actually sorry to see her leave Lehigh County's Board.

In the real world, she's President and Chairman of Silberline Manufacturing Co., Inc. In case you don't know, this Tamaqua - yes, I said Tamaqua - corporation is a world leader and global supplier of high-quality special effect and performance pigments. She has both math (University of Colorado) and engineering (Lehigh University) degrees. Just a few months ago, she was honored by Schuykill County's Chamber of Commerce as their Entrepreneur of the Year.

But her story goes beyond her government service and business acumen. She is a recovering heroin addict who lived on the streets. Unlike many others, she has gone public. In fact, she established the Hope and Coffee shop in Tamaqua, her hometown, for fellow addicts.

When I received word that Lisa would be making an announcement at Lehigh County Community College yesterday, a 36 minute drive from Nazareth, I felt I owed it to my fellow addict.

She announced a scholarship program for Lehigh County and Tamaqua high school students enabling them to take college-level courses in the junior and senior years and receive both a high school diploma and associate's degree. This scholarship is available to students eligible for free or reduced lunches.

Currently, 56 students from Allentown School District alone are enrolled in a scholarship Scheller made available to technical school students. She's expanded the program so that it applies to all high school students.

In her remarks, Scheller said education "opens so many doors" for people who were "not put here to be something, but to be someone."  She stressed a country of "educational haves and have nots is a threat to democracy."

Scheller is mulling a run for the Congressional seat held by Susan Wild in the Pa. 7th District. It's rated by Cook Political Report as "likely Democratic," but 2020 is far off.

  1. I would say,"mano y mano" however, that does not seem to fit. So the female equivalent would be great. This woman will have all the money in the world. If Wild does not steer towards the middle and away from the uber zany left dems, she is toast.

  3. There are those of us who are so anti Trump that we could never support anyone who would defend Trump and his way of governing. Look at the polls. This woman deserves to be in government, just not as my congresswoman. How about Governor?

  15. She has got my vote left or right because wild has never been quite right between it's ears. 2020 all parasites will be going out to pasture to graze like cows before the slaughter.

  16. Bernie, you single handedly have done more for the lehighvalley than any one individual! You were instrumental in Allentowns fed ed and his retirement send of to a close federal penitentiary. This is for qwick transport back to Allentowns federal court house when the next round of indictments are transcribed for the many other convoluted corruption actors that still infect Allentowns public daily life.
My thanX and well deserved props go out to you even though Wild made it in office for now. This is not me blowing smoke up your ass either, as if I did blow smoke up your ass rainbow unicorns would not billow out trying to partake of the carnival circus experience. I will sign to see if because of my vulgarities I am deleted. Live and let live is one of many life mottows I live by, just because I don't by into them.
This lady is top notch and would mop the floors of Wilds tears if she chose to run in 2020 to occupy the seat that is presently fill by a suit with a empty head!

  17. I wish lisa well but she has a lot of explaining to do as far as the current effect on our nations farmers. I am hearing that in PA the farms that are least affected are those run by the Amish/Mennonite community. In the midwest farmers are livid over the prospect of admitting that they are accepting government help due to the downturn in sales to other countries. Soon the results of this years harvest will be in. Its bad enough over the years we lost manufacturing now the small farms are threatned .

  18. Go for it Lisa. I believe we have yet to get the biggest political shock. The current mess will fester leaving Trump sure to be impeached and in Jan there is a shark frenzy of republicans falling all over themselves announcing their candidacy in the republican primaries. Little Marco is ready.

  19. Bernie, the hostel take over effect of farms by arson smells like bacon! Just smell the smell in the air before the farmers gives said pigs a proper burial before the hounds from hell twist farmers mind with help of insurers.
Sad cRaZy didn't have another pet pig in this one?

  21. I appreciate having someone who has been honest with her past to the public. As long as I have known Lisa, she has been nothing short of brilliant and trustworthy. I am not sure what anonymous @3:01 was referring to as another addict in politics, however, she has been transparent which is something refreshing in the world of politics. Hope and Coffee which she orchestrated and opened in Tamaqua gives opportunities for drug addicts to work and find a place to gather as an alternative to being on the streets with nothing but time to fill with feeding their addiction. Lisa has a genuine passion for our youth and education. She actually takes action in assisting those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. She is brilliant, intelligent and well invested in our communities. I believe she is exactly the person we need to represent our District as Congresswoman!!
