Biden Winner of Both Dem Debates; Tulsi Shines Again

Joe Biden was assailed 27 times during Wednesday night's debate among 10 Presidential contenders. This time, instead of looking like a deer frozen in the headlights, he responded effectively to attempts to distort his moderate views on issues like health care and immigration. Although he delivered few zingers, and sometimes fumbled what he was saying, he held his own and occasionally threw detractors like Cory Booker and Kamala Harris on the defensive. I actually consider him the winner of both nights of debates.

On Tuesday, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren spoke passionately in favor of things like Medicare for All, free college and the Green New Deal. But when people promise things that sound too good to be true, they usually are. Fairy tales are nice to read, but pragmatism is what works. Biden's centrist views are more appealing to me.

As good as Kamala Harris was in her first debate, that's how bad she looked last night. Her attempted attacks on Biden failed, and the former prosecutor found herself in an unfamiliar role as a defendant when combat veteran Tulsi Gabbard lit into her.

Gabbard, who looked very good in the first debate, was even better last night. While most of her barbs were aimed at Donald Trump, her takedown of Harris's role as California's AG was epic.

As Harris squirmed and shook her head, Gabbard eviscerated her as someone who jailed people for marijuana possession, but then laughed when asked if she ever used it.

"[S]he blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so. She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California. And she fought to keep cash bail system in place that impacts poor people in the worst kind of way."

"The bottom line is, when you were in a position to make a difference and an impact in these people's lives, you did not. And worse yet, in the case of those who are on death row, innocent people, you actually blocked evidence from being revealed that would have freed them until you were forced to do so. There's no excuse for that."

This unemotional and fact-based style was apparent in her limited opportunities to speak.

Harris has been touted as Biden's VP candidate, but Gabbard would be better.

  2. I'm not sure why you think Biden won this debate, other than you just agree with him because you are both old and afraid of change. There were no less than three times that he was in the middle of sentences that appeared to be building to a climax before he abruptly cut himself off.

Gabbard launched a good attack at Harris, which I've been waiting for someone to do, but Gabbard's own agenda is still a bunch of vague platitudes, and a sizable chunk of her supporters are youtube conspiracy theorists.

  6. Anyone other than C9omrade Trump from "Operation Chaos", is appealing. This was a better debate than the first night. One of these people would make a better candidate than the first night. Why? Because this debate featured people who understand that unless you win you cannot implement any policies. Yelling and waving your arms just scares people, stop it please

The best thing about these debates is they are over. The next debates will not have all the hanger ons and we can get down to business.

Also when will these candidates stop taking the pandering bait from the panelists. Refuse to answer yes or no questions and if the question is stupid, say so. It is OK to say I don't agree withy the premise of your question. Period!!!

  9. Now that I've watched all the Democrat candidates perform live and under pressure (except those CNN favorites given a pass) I don't see anyone that could handle the job of American President better than Trump.

On the international stage, most of these Dems would be ignored or laughed at. That should be obvious.

Biden won last night (and Tuesday) bc he countered his detractors and, in some cases like Booker, gave it back. Yes, he did flub a few times and delivered no zingers, but by no means looked senile.

As fir Gabbard, you haven't read enough about her. One thing she is not is vague. Actually, I disagree with her isolationist view of foreign policy, but she is infinitely preferable to the current occupant of the WH.

I believe she would be a great running mate for Biden.

  14. Trump and all these Democrats just blow sunshine up our colons, while pretending we're not $22 trillion in debt and at 105% debt-to-GDP. Let's keep fighting endless wars and promising free shit to everyone while we open the borders to people fleeing violence in Honduras - which has a lower murder rate than Baltimore. Our new country is great.

I'm embarrassed that he's our President. He has already made us a laughing stick in international circles.

Any of the Dems running, except possibly Williamson, would be better.

  16. If you watched the debate, you know this is untrue. Gabbard, who actually is a combat vet, spoke quite eloquently about endless wars. Biden made pretty clear that he opposes open borders or free shit for everyone.

  17. Biden's biggest asset is that after the election is over many of us believe that he can actually govern if he wins. He certainly didn't show last night that he is an exciting candidate who will inspire the progressive left wing of the Democratic party but he does give the impression of having enough experience, reason and stability to serve as the President in a more traditional style than Trump. God help us all if the Democrats nominate an ideological left wing firebrand who will be full of "wonderful" impractical proposals that have zero chance of being passed through Congress and implemented. If the party platform includes ideas such as more "free" benefits and reparations for slavery and the proposed method of funding these things will be to tax "the hell out of the rich", the Democrats might as well Fed Ex reelection to Donald Trump right now as one of the debaters suggested.

It's sad that Clinton clipped Joe 4 years ago and boxed Bernie out handing Trump a easy victory, what's happening to Joe now is a disgrace...he could have gone out on top...Harris is shameless, with a character much worse than The Donald.

  41. The government is broke. Many of its citizens have trillions saved in retirement instruments, however. Democrats want at that damm money to continue playing Santa at election time. It's why money gets taxed multiple times already. Nothing is free. Taxing the rich at 95% doesn't make a dent. There's an enormous pool of money held by the private sector. And Democrats need it because it's the only money there is.

Wonder why you fail to mention that Tulsi has apologized for statements she made as a much younger person and now works for LGBTQ rights.

As for Assad, her point is that she opposes regime change wars and rejects vilifications that later turn out to be untrue. I personally consider him a monster.

Have you been to the Issues section of her website? All it has is basically a few selected quotes about each issue and links to bills she cosponsored. There are no plans for new policies or even specific problems she hopes to solve. A considerable portion of it is dedicated to explaining why she thinks Assad didn't actually use chemical weapons.

Being a veteran has very little to do with the quality of president you will make, and to the extent that it is a credential, it is one that is shared by Pete Buttigieg. Some of our best presidents were veterans, but so were some of our worst (Tyler, Taylor, WH Harrison, A Johnson). And her argument to end "regime change wars" is effectively meaningless because no military action is justified by regime change unless after it happens (see Iraq, which was initially justified by attempting to link the country with 9/11 and by claiming it had WMDs). In fact, the way her campaign is spending money is in itself an exercise in poor management. I drove through northern NH a few days ago, and Gabbard was the only candidate foolish enough to spend money on billboards on rural state roads that almost nobody uses.

It is also important to understand that the reason she is embraced on the right is that she is a Democrat who is fully willing to say "Robert Mueller found that there was no collusion between Trump and Russia" despite the fact that Mueller explicitly contradicted this in his report, and to appear on FoxNews whenever they call her up.

    12:52

By the way, it's cool that Biden opposes open borders, but that is also true of every other candidate. Civil offenses are still illegal.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Mueller never did find collusion between Trump and Russia. That is a separate issue from whether Russia attempted to influence the election. You must not be a very good reader.

Also, I find her website to be just as informative as so-called top tier candidates likeHarris.

The reality is that she was articulate and at times eloquent in both debates. I consider her superior to most of the Dems.

a crime, we applied the framework of conspiracy law, not the concept of 'collusion.'" – Mueller report page 10

You said "Mueller never did find collusion between Trump and Russia." That is true because he did not evaluate the evidence in light of "collusion". This does not mean the same thing as "he found no collusion."

Put another way, if you go into the kitchen looking for an apple and when you come back your friend asks if you found any pears, you might rightly say, "No, I wasn't looking for pears."
If you return and before being asked say "I found no pears," this implies you looked for pears and didn't find any.

    Mueller wan't looking for pears.

No, I lifted that sentence directly from the report. If you want, I can copy the whole page. You clearly didn't read the thing or listen to his press conference. He did not assess whether there was evidence for collusion because it is not a legal term. It doesn't really have any specific meaning.

  63. Bernie, she actually hasn't explained why she met with Assad. She explained why a President should meet with hostile heads of state. She didn't do it as president, she did it as one of 435 House members who can't do jack diddly about our relationship with Syria by meeting with the maniac who leads it, and also apparently has no interest in helping the hundreds of thousands of people his murdering. Many representatives are outrageous buffoons who I am surprised can manage to even find their offices each day and should not be doing this sort of thing. At that time Gabbard, 33, serves as a Military Police Captain in the Hawaii Army National Guard. During this time, she was unable to accept media requests or make public statements related to her official congressional duties.

Approximately 1 year later she was promoted to Major and she continues to serve as a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard.
