$4.8 Million Minsi Lake Improvements Underway

Have you ever visited Lake Minsi? It's a 117-acre lakein Upper Mount Bethel Tp, but it also includes woodlands, trails and 400 "vernal pools" (also known as swamps) that attract all kinds of migratory birds and other wildlife. I used to fish there daily when I first quit drinking. My AA sponsor was a great fisherman, and he was going to turn me into Jeremiah Johnson. Well, I never caught anything. That's not why I was there. I loved its pristine beauty, especially at this time of year. The solitude and cold air really helped me clear my mind.

A $4.8 million Lake Minsi improvement project is underway, and will be finished by November 2019. The PA Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will construct a new reinforced concrete spillway, raising the crest of the dam approximately two feet. After the new spillway is complete, the lake will be refilled and restocked in time for the 2020 trout season.

During construction, which begins this week, parking will be limited to designated areas.

I liked it the way it was, but understand that the lake had some problems.

Minsi, incidentally, is wither a phratry of the Lenape people or one of the languages they spoke.

  1. Hey Bernie, when Tara Zirinski runs against Marsha Hahn next year, will she have campaign photos standing in front of the lake while hugging a bear?

    1. Tara is bad for Northampton County and would be worse for the Commonwealth. Hahn will kick her ass in the slate belt. Have you ever reported on her contempt of court?

  2. I always found the place to be so plastered with goose shit, it was impossible to use any grassy area.

  3. At one time, Minsi Lake was the "Crown Jewel" of recreational areas for the Northampton County Parks" program. Tens of thousands of outdoor enthusiast's would converge on the Park to enjoy the miles of hiking trails, fishing, the nature trails, the state of the art "archery facility", and the environmental facility. Thousands would attend the weekend archeryfest held every August. It was probably the largest archery festival of its kind on the east coast. It was all accomplished with volunteers and cooperation of the Northampton County Parks Department. It's been years since I've been to the area, Does the archery facility, trails, environmental facility still exist? Doesn't the County own several hundred acres of land adjoining the lake?

  4. Thanks to the people like the late Isadore "bill" Mineo, (who was hired by the County Commissioners to design a Northampton County Parks Program), you have a great Minsi Lake Recreational Area. RIP Bill Mineo.

  7. I wonder if Tara is concerned with the negative impact of the resident goose population? Nasty little buggers can be hell on an ecosystem if unchecked. I'm sure she will invite the spokesgooseperson to her the newly minted committee and demand an explanation. If the goose could get a word in edgewise.

  8. If the goose were born there they will not leave there. Some times the vanish from the lake.
