"Reformer" Wild Brings Top Dem Donor to SOTU

Murat Guzel and Susan Wild
At last night's SOTU, both President Donald Trump and numerous members of Congress brought guests to use as props for points they wanted to make. Trump brought the surviving family of an elderly couple killed by an undocumented immigrant (or illegal alien) in January. Not to be outdone, Democrats hosted an air traffic controller, a Liberian under threat of deportation and at least least one transgender. So who did SusanWild, the Lehigh Valley's voice in Congress, bring? Was it the cancer survivor (and employee of Wild's law firm) who railed against Marty Nothstein in a TV ad? Was it the woman who must work a second job to pay for her health insurance? Nah. The candidate who said her top priority is campaign finance reform brought top Democratic donor Murat Guzel.

The message this sends is pretty clear.

Susan Wild lauded Guzel for his "countless contributions to the Lehigh Valley," but you can count them. They fill the coffers of local, state and national Democratic candidates.

In years of examining campaign finance reports, I've seen Guzel's name often. He contributes to just about every Democrat on the ballot. Lots of money, too. For example, he seeded Executive Lamont McClure's race with $5,000. But that's (organic) peanuts to him. As of April, 2018, the CEO of Natural Food Group and SMART Juices has contributed over $1 million to Democratic candidates through Super PACs, Hybrid PACs, historical soft money party accounts and joint fundraising. This is in addition to his direct contributions, which add up to at least $642,000 to 79 filers over the past nine years.

That's a lot of health food!

He even kicked in $5,000 to Governor Tom Wolf's first inauguration party.

Now I don't blame Democrats for taking this money. They need all the money they can get, what with the feds shutting down the money stream from engineers, developers and unions. Pay-to-play is more difficult these days. What could be more innocent than accepting a donation from a health food purveyor who presents himself, as he did in The Morning Call, as a successful new American?

If you're in Congress, there's lots wrong with taking money from this guy, though Wild took the maximum amount he could give.

Thanks to Wikileaks, we know that the man Wild invited as her SOTU actually may have paid a former Congressman to write a pro-Turkey op-ed. "[W]e were able to get an article from a very important person and we didn’t spent that much money for it,"he boasts in an email to a Turkish official. “To stand by Erdogan and do whatever we can against evil powers is not just an act of kindness but rather an Islamic obligation upon all of us,” he adds.

Through a lawyer, Guzel denies sending this email. Uh huh.

I'd like to know whether these political donations come from Guzel or Turkey.

In addition to his support for an authoritarian, Guzel has also lobbied Congress to end any financial support for the Kurds, who have been the driving force in the fight against ISIS. Aside from Israel, the Kurds have been our only real ally in the Middle East.

We complain about possible collusion with Russia, but it's pretty clear that Guzel is using either his or his country's treasure to support a strongman government in Turkey as well as suppress an ethnic minority. Considering that Erdogan had a goon quad beat up Kurdish protesters here in the United States, I am leery of both him and his health food salesman.

So there you have it. Our representative in Washington, who claims to be all about about campaign finance reform, brought a top Dem donor to the SOTU. Not just that, but a top Dem donor who supports an authoritarian and is all for suppressing an ethnic minority.

Brilliant, Susan.

  2. "paid a former Congressman to write a pro-Turkey op-ed."

" paid a former GOP congressman to write a pro-Turkey op-ed last year"
"op-ed he helped place in The Washington Times written by former Indiana Rep. Dan Burton."
The real kicker is using the daily caller as a source.good ole tucker carlson?
the same site that "in January 2019, The Daily Caller published a story with the misleading headline "Here’s The Photo Some Described As A Nude Selfie Of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez." The photo was not of Ocasio-Cortez."--https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Daily_Caller
Congrats Bernie no claim no matter how far removed from Wild will be used as a club to bash her.

that can be looked up directly without believing crooks and liars.
Would it fair to bash Morganelli about it?

  9. I have no problem with ANY candidate taking donations from private citizens . . . so long as it's LEGAL and ABOVEBOARD. My problem is with sneaky, slime ball politicians who wash their donations through suspicious non-profits and other front groups with hidden agendas. Some not in best interest of America.

Voted for Morganelli. Susan Wild, in my opinion, is a bit of a fraud. She'll be in good company with the "new" Democrat Party of hypocrisy.

  10. Question is did Trump make any more concessions to Putin the SOTU? He bowed to Putin and Turkey in Syria. He gave Putin a gift of bowing out of Arms Treaty giving Putin permission to restart the cold war. Trump is Putin's puppet. But hey, those meetings in Trump tower were just about adoptions. It is true because Hannity said it.

  19. We all know Susan Wild is a hypocrite, who actually likes rich white males as long as they are writing checks.

My favorite part of Trump's speech was when Trump called out wealthy politicians who live in gated/walled communities and use prestigious private schools. They don't have to worry about the impacts of illegal immigration. Reminded me of a letter to the editor in the Morning Call last week in which a resident of Lower Saucon Township voiced their support for an open border to allow refugees to stream into America. Of course, because the letter writer just assumes the Central Americans (who refuse offers of citizenship from Mexico) will be directed straight to communities like Allentown. I wonder if the letter writer would support a public housing development for Central American citizens in Lower Saucon Township and placement of their children in Saucon Valley school district.

  20. Wild showed her true colors last night. Sat until conductor Pelosi allowed her to rise out of her chair. Wild should be representing the people of the Lehigh Valley and not the liberal left.

  24. ”Bernie: Where were you when this guy was maxing out for Dent every year?”

I was wondering who the hell he is. I knew nothing about him. It is only within the last two years that I have learned that he supports an authoritarian in Turkey who uses thugs to beat up dissidents here. It is only within the last year that we’ve learned he is anti-Kurd. Given this knowledge, no one should accept his money. Wild did. Not only that, she hosted the guy at the SOTU while claiming to be all about campaign finance reform. As I have noted several times before, she is a phony.

  25. Wow...lots of misogyny hanging out here today in addition to the Fox and extreme right talking points. Could Susan have had a better guest...absolutely. However, this particular post really shows the blind side of Trump worshippers "My favorite part of Trump's speech was when Trump called out wealthy politicians who live in gated/walled communities and use prestigious private schools. They don't have to worry about the impacts of illegal immigration." Are you kidding?? You DO REALIZE that your god is a one of these people that will never have to worry about sullying himself by having an illegal immigrant living near him right? EXCEPT of course, he has been very willing to take advantage of their cheap labor in his branded properties. Do you even hear yourselves Trumpians?

I assumed that it was to show solidarity with the Democrat Governor and Democrat Attorney General in Virginia.

    ReplyDelete
  27. BTW, we know that the Democrat Governor in Virginia (by his own admission) wore blackface in the 80's.

The Democrat Attorney General in Virginia also admitted to wearing blackface in the past.

The Democrat Lt. Governor is accused of sexually assaulting a woman and, now that the assault has been brought to light, has been quoted as saying "F**k that b**ch" just this week. Not exactly in line with the "Me Too" movement.

Yet at the end of the day, Democrats will circle the wagons and all three will keep their jobs.

Because going into hysterics over false charges about Republicans is more important that holding their own accountable for real offenses.

    It's the democrat way.

  28. Huntress -

We all realize that the President now has Secret Service protection and, like the politicians he called out last night, had the means to shield himself and his family with private security measures (including walls and fences) before he became President.

Where he differs from your politicians is that he wants some measure of protection for the rest of us as well.

A few years ago, I took my family to Canada. We were required to have proper ID and go through a designated point of entry. We wouldn't have even thought about breaking Canadian law and trying enter by another method.

Is it too much to ask that those who want to enter our country to come through designated points of entry as well? That's hardly unreasonable.

    ReplyDelete
  29. new yorks lineup cumo schumer deblaseo go new youk

    ReplyDelete
  30. what about his hypocrisy with exploitation of illegal immigrants? Yeah, designated points of entry are legit of course, and preferred. However, when people do go through these checkpoints to claim asylum, this administration is making the designation of "refugee" almost impossible to obtain. He is driving more people to try their luck at more vulnerable areas. Also, let's not forget most illicit drug trade comes through these "legit" points of entry. That is where to spend the money.

  32. Not at all. At that time, it was unknown that Guzel supports the Turkey strongman and that he also supports the suppression of an ethnic minority.

    ReplyDelete
  33. so a donor who supports Turkish thugs is outed in December of 2016.
Then a politician accepts a donation from the same donor for 2700 in January of 2018,
    Sounds squishy.

  34. Given the history of what Turkey did to the Kurds in the past, I would be very, very alarmed that our Congresswoman would be in the same room as this creep. I wonder if she is even aware of the past ethnic cleansing of Kurds by Turkey.

Huntress, that's because the term "refugee" has a very distinct legal meaning.

A Central American (non-Mexican) person who claims to be a refugee ceases to be one the moment they enter Mexico. The threat that they might be claiming to achieve asylum no longer exists the moment they leave their home jurisdiction.

So by the time they arrive here, that claim for asylum is no longer legally valid.

I certainly understand why they might want to continue on to the U.S., but they are no longer refugees. They are choosing where they want to immigrate to, and should not be able to jump the line of applicants for legal immigration.

  37. I find your hypocrisy about Morganelli accepting Murat’s generosity striking, Bernie.

  43. I pegged Murat for more of a Morg fan-boy based on campaign contributions. If you looked through Morganelli's campaign contributions you could see that not only did Murat and everyone in his immediate family contribute maximum donations, but you will find several other maximum donations coming from people directly employed by Guzel's business. Either way, this article is about Wild, and I'm not surprised she took him to the SOTU. She's campaigning for a second term, and she needs a backup if Emily's List doesn't come riding in with bags full of cash again.
