Nazareth Area Residents Mobilize to Oppose Proposed Warehouse

A group of Nazareth-area residents is mobilizing to fight a 1.1 million sq ft warehouse proposed along Gun Club Road in Upper Nazareth Tp. According to The Express Times, current plans call for 263 trucking docks and 477 parking spaces.

In two days, over 250 area residents have signed an online petition opposed to any additional truck traffic spilling out into residential areas in Upper Nazareth and Nazareth. But the project is to be located in an area zoned general industrial, where warehouses are permitted by right.

Upper Nazareth's Planning Commission will review the plans on Thursday, Oct 11, at Upper Nazareth's Municipal Building.

Both candidates for State Rep. have already come out against the proposal.

Challenger Amy Wallace Cozze: "I live just over a mile from the site, and take the roads surrounding it to get my son to Lower Nazareth Elementary School. ... This is most certainly more than a local issue, there are aspects of this that allow for state level intervention. ... I look forward to not only supporting you, but to working along side of you to protect our community."

Incumbent Joe Emrick: "I stand with everyone now, just as I did last year to stop the proposed county prison at Gracedale. This is an issue that will be decided at the township level. As a result, that is where voices & concerns need to be heard and expressed the most."

My primary question at this point is whether this impacts wetlands.

  4. It's not a situation like Abe Atiyeh where he wants to turn a single family home into a 3 unit home in Brodhead Manor, the zoning is in place for the trucking facility. Progress!

  5. Mr. Tavianni needs to worry about his lake not building another unneeded warehouse. Greed at its highest level. Stop with these ridiculous cement kingdoms. Build it by a highway not on the back roads of a beautiful township. Enough is enough.

  6. When will people smarten up and realize petitions never work. Plus the use is permitted in this case. They are fighting a losing battle.

  7. Amy's comment just shows you how clueless she is. She's maybe more clueless then Jason Ruff. Joe is correct that it's a local issue. The only ones that can stop this is the township. They need to find a way to deny it

  8. Can't dispute that zoning allows for a warehouse, since it falls under "Industrial" use. It could/should be argued that warehousing could/should fall somewhere else entirely since the primary impact of a warehouse is less localized to the specific site in question. The existing infrastructure in surrounding boroughs and townships can't accommodate an increase in truck traffic.

I am sure trees and berms would minimize noise and light issues for adjacent property owners as well as limits on hours of peak operation. The biggest issue with this use at this location is how/where the associated truck traffic gets in and out of the property on their way to and from 33 and/or 22.

Rte 248 has choke points in either direction via Bath or Nazareth. Newburg Rd to the south is an even worse option again in either direction.

  9. Cozze is a real bubblehead. She sees herself as a local celebrity and has not won any thing yet. The pink caps love her. Is there a cause she has not jumped on?

  10. Cozze is just talking out of her ass and saying what the public wants to hear. If by some dumb chance she gets elected she will be in for a rude awakening when she realizes her hands will be tied and she cant do shit.

  11. When you talk like that, you diminish yourself and empower her.
