Hanover Tp (NC) Introduces 10th Straight No-Tax-Hike Budget

Chair John Diacogiannis
On Tuesday night, Hanover Township (NC) Manager Jay Finnigan provided Supervisors with his proposed budget for 2019. He is recommending they hold the line on taxes for the 10th straight year. He has also cut spending by $200,000. There are also no plans to borrow money for anything.

The Township currently has zero debt.

The millage rate, which has remained the same since 2008 and includes a fire tax of 0.5 mills, will hold steady at 3.90 mills if Supervisors go along.

In other good news, Chairman John Diacogiannis announced that Hanover and Lower Nazareth Townships have reached agreement in principle with the Colonial Regional Police Department on a new contract for the officers. He expects Supervisors to vote on it at their October 23 meeting.

Supervisor Jack Nagle is in China and was absent.

"He defected," claims Public Works Director Vince Milite.

  1. The major reason there hasn't been a tax hike in years is that development hasn't reached a saturation point. Once there's nowhere left to build, spending will catch up to and eventually surpass revenue. Bethlehem Township experienced this for 20+ years, and then had to find the revenue, or bite the bullet.

  2. They are indeed living on borrowed time. Short term gains but long term problems. They are all patting themselves on the back like you do for them but the next generation of leaders will have to pick up the pieces. Hasn't that guy been ion office for a thousand years, how old is he?

    Nothing to see here.

  3. It's always great to see jealous people weigh in. People need to take some lessons from Hanover.

  4. The only major new development in HT in recent years is a TOA. The reason it has no fiscal problems is it does not spend money until it has it. The main reason for this is the fire tax and good management, which includes cross-training employees in different jobs

  5. Hanover is mostly built out. The vacant land they do have left is mostly off Airport Road and it has limited developability due to the zoning. The Township is fighting the Airport to keep it that way. If they really wanted to increase the tax base, they could easily rezone it. But that is not in the best interest of the Township.

Hanover has been well run going back through the history. They have had stable elected leadership and good Managers like Crawford and Sterner. The buildings and infrastructure of the Township are well-maintained, which is a credit to the workers, most of whom live in the Township.

The Township is well positioned for the future. No debt and a stable tax base will allow the Township to continue to maintain the buildings and infrastructure with little to no extra burden on the taxpayers.

  6. Of course no tax hike they have Finnigan bragging about their millions in reserve. They'll need that for the increasing costs of their police.

  8. With the local media not covering local government it is a good thing you are reporting on them.
Bernie can you give us another hard hitting news article about Hanover Township. We never realized how great they were until you reported.

  10. Bernie, Bernie, Bernie. For a guy who loves to attack people you claim have thin skin, you yourself are guilty of said thin skin. Why so?
Gotta hand it to you Bernie, when you commit you commit. Ladies take notice he is monogamous. This may be the first time you have made an entire municipality and all its leaders one of your mancrushes. No one dare criticize any of them. You will find yourself in the dead zone of Bernie's make you disappear file.

Good for the Hanover Township boys. You are now and forever protected on this love blog! Can you handle this.
